Where’s the baby? He’s around 10 months old but he’s missing in action. I look around the nursery. The baby is well cared for, he has everything he needs. But the only person here is me.
A strange first day at work, so far. But it will get stranger.
There’s a brown teddy bear sitting on the rocking chair by the window. I pick u...

Tom sits on the couch across from his wife and he shrugs. “I didn’t say I didn’t like it. I’m just…” He shrugs again. He laughs. “What am I supposed to do with it?”
Donna balances the teddy bear on her knee. It’s plain, tan thing. Not vintage, not brand new. “You don’t have to do anything with it, Tom. It’s just ...

“Bath, then fluffy towel,” Hope corrects him sweetly. “You don’t want to be all wet and drippy, do you?”
Mason shakes his head. “No…but then we gotta- “
Hope lowers him into the bath. The water is the perfect temperature, and the fruity scent of the bubbles feels almost overwhelming to Mason. Not overwhelming his nostrils; overwhelming his sense of time. Because ...

The cracks are clearer, now Mason is clean and dry.
He can remember the time before today, he can remember the time before his regression.
Funny, how those two periods hold equal weight in his mind.
Thirty years of normal life, a regular childhood (no more bruised and confused than anyone else’s) and time spent as an adult that wasn’t spectacular (job, house, marriage) but certainly wasn’t a failure.
Mason imagines holding up ...

Hope takes Mason upstairs to the nursery.
Does he want to sit on her lap?
No. Definitely not.
How about just sitting on the rug beside the crib?
Fine. Whatever.
But they have to talk.
Hope answers the first question. “About six months go.” She puts a finger to her chin. “Yes, must be…and so you’re fifteen months old now.” She has answered Mason’s second question without him asking.
Mason considers th...

Mason is surprised when the first crack appears.
It’s Tuesday morning, he’s at home. Nothing special. He’s just playing with the blocks.
He’s not the best at stacking them – Mommy’s the best at that – but he is the best at knocking them down.
And so he’s hard at work, balancing the chunky blocks ...

Two excellent ideas from Joseph already -
1. A woman finds her childhood stuffed animal, a fun bit of nostalgia at first but when it starts whispering to her, she suddenly can't remember what she's doing for most of her days
2. Two parents buy...

Joanna’s dress is light blue with flowers on the top. It’s not the dress she was wearing when she arrived.
“Take a bite,” says Harry. “Come on, now. You were so hungry a few minutes ago.”
True. But Joanna was a lot of things a few minutes ago. Twenty six year...

Jamie is dressed like a toddler, but everything considered, it could be worse.
They could be back in the examination room, for example. At least in this new room, there’s plenty to look at. So many cool things!
If only Becca wasn’t so bossy.
“You have to drink your juice,” Becca says, thrusting an over-sized sippy cup into Jamie’s hands. “Lots of juice and l...

Jamie stands at the reception desk, holding Becca’s hand. So he doesn’t wander off, so he doesn’t get lost.
The good news is that he doesn’t need to pee. The bad news is because he wet his diaper like a stupid baby.
That was the plan, of course. Proving he was mentally adjusted. That was the plan.
But it wasn’t his plan. It was Becca’s. She made him do it, she called him cute names and patted his rear. She called him ...

Probably. If he has to. Truth is, he needs to go. His bladder is tight and heavy, full of that Kool-Aid crap they gave him during the test. Daisy had plied him with fruit drink and cookies until he was fit to burst.
So sure, he needs to piss. But really, does he have to do it in a diaper?
Jamie shrugs. “Let’s just wait, see what Daisy comes back with.”
Becca shakes her head. “You have to do it now. She looked s...
