Locked In, Lights On

This installation is a creation by Roni Lugassi, Inga Schmidt, Tünde Szakos and Kim Kong in collaboration with mental health patients.

The installation takes over an entire room within the nightclub Wilde Renate and reimagines it as a bedroom during lock down. The space also contains a number of framed photographs, paintings and video art. Its both evocative and contemplative, a relatable space for many people in the world who have spent the last few months in incomparable isolation. View Post

Update on pandemics, life and the Berlin scene

Its a crazy time to be producing shows. Normally a somewhat innocent past time, I'm mostly aiming to bring people a little delight, make them laugh, and have a nice night out. But increasingly I feel like the picture above, on the left is how I look, on the right is how I feel!

Even as I write this, I received a call that a show I produce on the weekend must be cancelled due to a covid case at the comedy club last Friday. Every day my plans are made, knowing full well that at any point ...

Our provocative double act

This is a piece I have been working on for quite sometime with my collaborator Liliana Velasquez. Eventually it made it into our full length theatre show a Pussy Powered Protest. I guess you can see why it fits there.

While we both mostly make work in the world of comedy, we also both have a passion for being provocative, and for experimentation, theatre and activism.

This piece combines these elements, creating something surreal but powerful, with a strong political aspect.

Working on gender bending space tease at Overmorrow

As you may have heard, I've been very happy to be working regularly at the Berlin nightclub Wilde Renate, which has reopened to house an immersive theatrical experience. This has given me a chance to exercise some forgotten creative muscles, and I am there so often I have been working on developing new material.

I've started working on a gender bending striptease using my toy, the 'theremerkin' aka an unholy marriage between a theremin (old school electric instrument) and a merkin (pubi...

New popohund scandalises the art world

I'm working on some new popohund/ bumdog videos.

Here's a very exclusive peek into the creative process...new story line, new characters, same old cheeky mayhem.

This time we are entering the art world. Gonna start working on the props, making a real breakable frame etc next.

What do you think?

Any suggestions of how we can make this bigger?

Brand new collaboration for female clown study

I was very flattered to be approached last month by Jana Rothe, a Luxemborgish photographer who is completing a Masters' study on the female clown.

She drove to Berlin to photograph and interview me about my art and creative practice.

I am so happy with the results - this fabulous collection showcasing the many cheesey looks of my alter ego Richard P Dick Van Johnson!

The portraits will be on exhibition in a historic tower outside of Hamburg this week.

Backstage with burlesque babes

I've been lucky enough to be involved in this immersive performance installation at the nightclub Wilde Renate. The club is famous for its wild parties and fetish nights, and some of those promoters including Trash Era and House of the Red Doors joined forces to capture their spirit in the new format.

As usual, I'm a goofy clown, but I get to hang out backstage with half naked burlesque dancers, drag things and fetish performancers.

Here I am with the adorable Inga Salome, ballet ...

She pulled off a humungus 22 hour program of online events to raise awareness for black sex worker rights, especially during this difficult time of global pandemic. Most sex workers ha...

Rapunzel reimagined with adult toys

Yep, like the name says. I have my whole own version of rapunzel using adult toys.  Yes, I had to buy a lot of toys to figure this out.

Now this is a very arty form of puppetry called 'object theatre' where ordinary day to day objects are transformed into lifelike creatures using the magic of theatre. Cool huh?

Here I am testing out the act at Berlin's prolific Cosmic Comedy Club (who will be reopneing 10 July, no less!)

Behind the scenes in the bedroom

Here's another insight into the process of making our new (soon to be) hit song 'eels'.

So what's happening here? Myself and Hadas Hinkis are creating scatted layers to add depth and texture to the song. We aren't using headphones, they are actually binaural microphones that sit in your ear cavities. They are super sensitive and pick up the direction and distance of every sound. We will weave them into the final track so that you can hear some oceanic noises all around you when you list...

Sneak peak - work in progress sea creature

This is pretty exciting!

Next week I will launch my first ever song - in my first ever band! We're called Mystery Fun Club, and the first single is a tribute to the eels in the Sumida Aquarium in Tokyo. These little guuys were starting to get shy from all the isolation during corona times and the Aquarium set up a bunch of ipads next to the tank and asked the general public to facetime the eels, so they wouldn't get lonely and forget humans! We know how they feel. You can read more abou...

Alternative Advertising

Here's some absurdist ads I've been working on which I'll chop up and use in my new web series, the Richard P Dick Van Johnson Show

I had fun experimenting with the terrible new green screen I just bought! And also dressing up in SOME of my sequined dress collection.

Not quite sure what the deal is with this character I'm channeling here but I hope you enjoy this...

Clown Gone Wild! March Photo Set

EARLY ACCESS

Clown Slam is a monthly clown competition I run in Berlin. As you can see it gets totally wild!

We have all kinds of clowns signing up; sexy clowns, scary clowns, funny red nosed clowns, transgender clowns, young clowns, old clowns, Clowns from the USA, Germany, Egypt, France, Israel and beyond! I often have school groups in the audience, which makes for some awkward conversations when things get a bit unhinged.

This was the last show before the plaugue shot my ...

Boudoir Shoot in a crumbling 100 year old manor

EXCLUSIVE PHOTO SHOOT

This is slightly more serious than usual, a classic boudoir shoot. Not weird, not experimental. I just enjoyed creating something simple and elegant with bows, curls and lace.

This shoot was taken by the wonderful photographer Victor Muruet, who I have collaborated with many times. He is originally from Mexico but now based in Sydney Australia.

The shoot took place in a very pretty, if somewhat crumbling Edwardian terrace in Glebe.

The Theremerkin: World's first ever crotch mounted theremin

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Boy oh boy, this one is cool!

So this is a one off performance I did at what is arguably Berlin's hottest drag show.

The character is a tragic showgirl/drag performer going by the name of Candida. I made her myself in New York using mostly carved and painted foam. The face is an articulated mask (meaning that the jaw of the mask moves) that I made from a plastic mask coated in satin and nail varnish.

In this routine I play around with a post...

Sunday Slips Open Mic - Behind the Scenes

You may not know this, but I have been producing a weekly open mic show livestreamed on Sundays.

New York Rooftop Merkin Fashion Shoot

The concept behind these images was a project called 'Merkins Annual'. The idea: to create the world's first fashion magazine for pubic wigs. This would be high concept FASHUN, showcasing the possibilities in stylish merkins for all seasons.

This particular shoot was done on a rooftop venue in Greenpoint, New York called the Mothership. It was a sunny summer's day, perfect for this sporty piece in urban genital style.
