Dear Patrons,
A quick production update from me -
I know many of you are eagerly awaiting the final episode of Napoleon's First Campaign - The Battle of Rivoli!
Work is well underway on this dramatic climax to the series, as well as Part 2 of the Abbasids - The Fall. I am pleased to share a few sneak peeks at both videos, which I hope to release here on Patreon in late July.
Apologies for the longer than usual delay in video release, but a famil...

Dear Patrons,
I'm very pleased to share the ad-free world premiere of our new video - 'Napoleon's First Campaign Part 4 - The Bridge at Arcole'.
This episode is packed with action - from Napoleon's first defeat in battle at Caldiero, to the iconic (and as we discuss, much mythologised) action at the Arcole bridge on 15th November. I hope you enjoy!
Thank...

Just in case any of you were worrying we'd forgotten about Napoleon! We have not, and are working hard to finish Episode 4 - 'The Bridge at Arcole'.
The next installment sees General Bonaparte go up against a new Austrian adversary, Jósef Alvinczi. Napoleon suffers his first battlefield defeat, but responds with a brilliantly daring plan to outflank the enemy... via a small bridge at the village of Arcole. It is here, of course, that one of the greatest of Napoleonic legends is b...

Dear Patrons,
I am very pleased to share the premiere of Islam's 'Golden Age' - Rise of the Abbasids!
This is the first episode in a two-part series telling the story of the rise and fall of the Abbasids (roughly, 750-1250). This dynasty ruled one of history's great empires, the Caliphate, during what came to be called 'Islam's Golden Age' (a term not exactly adored by al...

Dear Patrons,
Here it is - Part 1 of our new Napoleon in Italy series. This episode brings us up to speed with Napoleon's fortunes since the siege of Toulon, and covers the first dazzling weeks of his campaign in Northern Italy in April/May 1796. The climax of the video is the Battle of Lodi - in reality, not much more than a battering of the Austrian rearguard, but a key momen...

Dear Patrons,
As some of you know - after 1 year, 14 million views and no complaints that I am aware of - our WW1 video was recently age-restricted by YouTube (again!)
They never give a precise reason, but presumably because of a very small number of photos in which human remains were visible. As anyone who saw the video knows, these were always in a clear historical context, and never very graphic. This is very bad news for the video, because YouTube then stops ...

This video, even more than usual, is packed with his...

Dear Patrons,
As promised, a quick update on future plans, now that the Belisarius series is complete.
Next up is a two-part series on the Decembrist Revolt of 1825. For those that aren't familiar with the topic, this was an ill-fated attempt by Russian army officers (many of them veterans of the war against Napoleon) to overthrow the Tsarist government in a coup d'état. It's a fascinating insight into Russian 19th century politics, as well as a dramatic and moving st...
