Coumarine City was built around one single, massive hill. It might have been more accurate to call it a mountain the way it towered over the coastline that surrounded it, but its slope was gradual and covered with grass, making it not look like the classic image of a mountain at all.
A number of houses were built around its base to create a city in the shape of the donut that extended along the coast to the west and south. No houses were built on top of the hill, the space instead occup...

Training with Gurkinn was a lot simpler than I expected.
Rather than anything that intensive, the day after we first arrived, he forbade us from Mega Evolving our Pokémon and we instead worked on mental exercises.
He taught us breathing methods, meditation strategies, simple tricks for obtaining the right mind states, as well as goals our Pokémon could have to more easily sync up with us as trainers. For training about such a serious topic, it was moderately relaxed, and all our...

I blinked and Mega Blaziken was on us in moments.
Altaria was sent back into the air, a solid kick landing in the center of his body without Blaziken even using a move, and Venusaur was suddenly awash in flames as Blaziken turned to face it and used Flamethrower.
Altaria banked in the air and barely caught himself before he slammed into the wall, then soared forward, unleashing a Hyper Voice immediately after. Venusaur, meanwhile, brushed away the flames with Vine Whip and sent ou...

“So, let me get this straight: since you haven’t been able to help us, you want Hope and I to visit a friend of yours who is somehow a better expert on Mega Evolution than you, the foremost Professor on the phenomenon, and train under them for an unspecified period of time until we actually succeed?”
Sycamore smiled brilliantly.
“Yup!”
Hope and I exchanged a look, and I glanced back to Sycamore.
“So, when do we leave?” I asked.
Sycamore scr...

March 26th.
That was the date Thomas provided when he finally called back.
It took almost a week of waiting for him to finally respond, but knowing Steven would be arriving soon helped calm my nerves. Like I had done before, Thomas hid the information within a casual conversation, and he hid it far more adeptly than I had. We caught up on how my attempts at Mega Evolution had been going (poorly, by the way), how Fortree had been treating him, and even talked a bit about how I’d ...

The dark courtyard behind Lacey’s bakery was briefly illuminated with iridescent hues, but the colors faded away as Lemon’s Dazzling Gleam failed to last. Ninetales barked a few pieces of advice then demonstrated her own Dazzling Gleam, which lasted much longer than Lemon’s did, and only ended when Ninetales chose to end it. Lemon’s eyes went wide and it tried again, this time the colors persisted a bit longer, but quickly faded once more.
Opposite to them, Vanilla tried to spin...

I locked eyes with Altaria, who stared back with determination clear on his face. The other trainers assisting Sycamore stood off to the side, waiting for their turn to Mega Evolve their Pokémon after exploring Lumiose earlier today. Hope, on the other hand, had already done it around lunchtime, but I, however, hadn't. Instead, I spent time in the ranch with my Pokémon to cool off after everything that went on with Lysandre, and was now doing today’s attempt before I went to bed.
I ...

“We’ve got a guest! A wonderful guest! The very best guest, in fact! Come on everyone, he's waiting for us downstairs!"
Sycamore shouted as loud as possible, and I groggily opened my eyes, having been rudely awoken from my sleep. I pushed up and out of my bed, Ponyta jumping down from where he was sleeping next to me, and Ninetales brought her head up from where she had been asleep at my feet.
Florges, Azumarill, and Altaria were already awake, but Whimsicott was still sleepin...

When I returned to the lab after helping Lacey, I saw that one of the absolutely stuffed boxes of treats had already been finished off. That guilty look from outside of Lacey’s bakery returned to Ninetales’s face, and she turned away from where she was walking beside me.
The first of the other visiting trainers was scheduled to arrive today, so I decided to spend the rest of the afternoon with my Pokémon in Professor Sycamore’s garden. I doubted I would be able to get to know the...

“Ready? Let’s start!”
I tossed the rubber ball up as high as I could, and ran back to my side of the field. My teammates, Altaria, Azumarill, and Florges stood or floated next to me, ready to respond, while on the opposite side of the field, Ninetales, Ponyta, Whimsicott, and Mawile moved in to grab the ball.
The Pokémon to reach it first was Ponyta, who caught the ball with a weak Confusion, and smacked it upwards with the side of his head, sending it sailing into the air....

Altaria stared at me, unmoving after our failed attempt at Mega Evolution. Professor Sycamore was still going over the data, and Cosette was taking all of the attachments off of Altaria. I still felt bad about my failure to successfully Mega Evolve Altaria, but I wasn't going to let it get me down.
Mega Evolution was difficult. In the games, it was activated through a single button press. Here, though, it was an incredibly powerful phenomenon that drastically increased a Pokémon’s po...

As the plane approached the airport, I got my first look at Lumiose City through the window.
Lumiose City was the largest city I had ever seen, and that was somehow an understatement. Instead of building up with skyscrapers and towers, this city expanded outwards with numerous three or four story buildings that resembled European architecture. There were several concentric circles that served as major avenues, as well as several “spokes” of slightly narrower streets that connected t...

Ninetales’s jump just barely let her catch the frisbee, and she eyed her opponent, Gallade, who had just thrown it much farther than expected. Twisting her head, she flung it as hard as she could, and even enhanced its speed with her weak telekinesis. Gallade simply smirked and Teleported to where the frisbee was about to land, catching it, causing Ninetales to sit down and huff.
Nearby, Flygon and Altaria were racing in the skies to see who was the fastest, while Azumarill easily kep...

“Oh, Wally! I’m so sorry!”
A middle aged woman with short green hair and a dark outfit ran into the lobby of the main Pokémon Center and immediately wrapped Wally up into a hug.
“Honey! Are you okay? I hope you aren’t taking your loss too hard,” she said.
Wally’s mom held him out and looked him over, causing his face to turn completely red. She started to point out extremely minor imperfections about his health here and there as he looked like he wanted to be ...

The room was silent after Wally left, and the names continued to flash on the television. I didn’t pay much attention, as everyone else I recognized had already been shown or knocked out.
Marty was the first to speak.
“I’m not a Pokémon trainer, but should we get him? He looked a little panicked.”
Old Man Harvey shook his head, but I was the one to respond.
“Wally is... well, I think he's feeling what I’m feeling right now. We wanted this battle to happen,...

Winston found me alone in the Pokémon Center a few minutes later, after Wally had already left to prepare for Monday’s battle.
"Request our battle to be changed to a single battle," he ordered.
I turned to look at Winston, a little bewildered from his sudden command. He stood in front of me, arms crossed, while I sat on the cushioned couch in the corner of a seating area. His brows were furrowed and he was frowning slightly, and I couldn't help but notice the faintest bit of wo...

“Altaria I really need you to try to work on your Cloud Nine. I understand you like flying in clear skies, but for this strategy to work, you can’t instantly cancel out your ally’s weather.”
Altaria squawked and flew back down to the ground, where Whimsicott was bouncing on his feet next to me. The rest of my team was either watching, or in Azumarill and Mawile’s case, engaging in a footrace around the edge of the interior training room I managed to reserve. Afte...

The torch-bearer slowly ascended the large staircase in the back of the stadium. The fanfare slowly increased in volume as she made it up several stories, and reached a peak once she was only a few feet away from the massive brazier that stood above everything else. A platform under her feet extended upwards, and once she was level with the edge, she used the torch to light the brazier with Moltres’s flame.
The audience cheered uproariously as the 256 trainers stood in neat rows and c...

I rushed out of my room in the Pokémon Center, and saw several other trainers do the same. They hurriedly approached each other to issue challenges, and pairs of trainers ran towards the stairs to leave the building. I looked around to see if there was another free trainer around, and one approached me before I could approach him.
“I challenge you to a preliminary battle!” he said as fast as possible.
I would have said yes, but there was something about the desperation in his...

Whimsicott hummed happily as I walked down the main road of Ever Grande City. Jude’s Alakazam had just teleported us here, and now I was heading towards the large dome that served as a Pokémon Center.
Ever Grande City hosted both the headquarters of the Hoenn branch of the Pokémon League, and the Ever Grande Conference. The city was a collection of large but infrequent buildings, several apartment complexes and personal houses for competing trainers, large sections set aside for bat...

"Uh, hello?" I said to the woman at the front desk of the Weather Institute. "I received an invitation to be trained here...?"
She took the document I had received only a day ago, and visibly perked up. She cheerfully read it over, and once finished, smiled brightly at me.
"You must be Alex. I'm supposed to be working with you until the Conference. It’s nice to meet you."
I gave her a polite smile back.

I spent that night going over strategies with my team, and went to challenge Winona the next day.
I could have spent more time training, or taken the time to ensure everyone on my team learned their remaining TM moves, but honestly, I felt like we were ready. My seventh Gym Battle in Mossdeep had gone extraordinarily well, and I had spent plenty of time training since then. The gap between Gym Battles hadn’t been the longest gap I’ve ever had, but after everything we’d been throug...

“Roll your shoulder, please.”
I moved my right shoulder around in its socket, and was shocked to only feel a general soreness.
“....Wow. I can hardly feel any pain from that Mightyena bite.”
The doctor smiled at my reaction.
“Good. It means the medicine is working. Try not to put too much pressure on your shoulder for the next week, freshly regrown bones need time to properly solidify.”
I blinked.
Regrown bones?

With the help of Ponyta and Gallade, Wally and I managed to find a family of three and we took them to where everyone else was gathering at the Mossdeep Space Center. The mother and father rode with me in my basket, whereas their daughter rode behind Wally on Flygon. Flygon tried to hide it, but definitely enjoyed the scream of delight coming from its back.
Once we reached the space center, we found a number of people gathering. It seems that its elevated location on the island let it b...

I had wanted to visit Pacifidlog, just to see how it floats, but not like this.
The sky was dark and covered with storm clouds that let little light in. The best I could see was that it was actually built onto an island with an extensive series of floating wood docks, but I couldn't tell much else. The large expanse of floating wooden paths and houses were moving up and down in the tall, violent waves, and I didn’t see anyone on them. It seemed that everyone fled for safety on the mai...

I hadn’t beat Winona yet, but I couldn't help it. I had to try Mega Evolving Altaria at least once.
I understood that what I was doing was actually rather irresponsible, so I made sure to take the appropriate precautions first. I talked to Winona to ask for permission to use her Gym, and was guided to a more well suited battlefield instead. I sent a message informing Steven of my decision and he sent over his Metagross. I also made sure that my team would be out and ready to fight if ...
