Elephant Town Chapter 1 (pages 4 & 5)

Based on a misunderstanding by me and my old housemate Ryan last year, except it took us... much longer to figure out what bogo was.

Elephant Town Page Zero

Elephant Town officially starts Monday!! (Does "Page Zero" count as an update?!)

Have you ever thought about something SO HARD you assume you've already told everyone else around you? That's what I've been doing. But I don't think I've told you guys about all of this! So, here's an overview:

Elephant Town takes place in my little town, Shepherdstown, West Virginia, and follows four characters who don't know each other. And a cat. And maybe an elephant? I can...

Dumb little comic, and a note about April…

I haven't touched a bra in a week. What's really stupid is, I've worked from home for 15 years now and never NEEDED to wear a bra, but this is the week that made me go "ah fuck it, why?!" Maybe it's solidarity with ...

Hazel Jamie drinky animation

Figured I'd get straight to the animation I *wanted* to make. ;)

If time were really money this would be a very expensive hobby! But I'm LOVING IT and doing these instead of regular daily drawings, so maybe I'll just restrict myself to little tiny animations that only take two hours? This took ALL MORNING and then suddenly it was 3 pm and I hadn't eaten in seven hours.

Gimme some prompts that might be easy for me to do (one character, few elements) and I'll ...

Baby's first animation!

I had this super talented Girl Scout in the comics workshop I taught last weekend, and she showed me a short animation she made (this is for some meme that I don't get because old, but check out the rest of her work, too, I love her characters!).

I asked her what she used to animate it, she told me about FlipaClip, I r...

Hourly Comic Daaaaaay!!

I was flying home all day Saturday, February 1st, which was Hourly Comic Day! I've never been awake for so many hours on Hourly Comic Day before. Which just means more panels, yaaaaay here we go!

Omnis Linea Diem

**edit: decided to make this one public so people know what I'm sharing with $1+ patrons this month. This year? I sure hope I keep doing this all year!**

I'm no Latin expert (or hobbyist for that matter), but that translates roughly to "a line every day." This (or something close to this) is something Michael says every once in awhile when we talk during figure drawing. He ...

Frivolity

Today while I was finishing a painting, I let myself catch up on Lucy Bellwood's delectable 20-minute audio ramblings that she shares with her patrons, and was both startled and tickled to discover that she mentions me several times throughout 2019-12-19 06:14:01 +0000 UTC View Post

Caricature Week Day 1!!

Hey and hello! I'm back home after spending a week in Memphis for this year's International Society of Caricature Artists convention, my favorite week of the year!

The week starts off with registration and breakfast on Monday, after which we storm the ballroom of whatever hotel we're infesting for the next few days with our gear. We set up our art supplies, take pictures of people we want to draw, and settle in to draw through Tuesday, Wednesday, and most of Thursday. Each of us (there ...

Laura Mae Watercolor Poster

Had a fun weekend fiddling with this poster design for my old pal Laura Mae Socks's record release show this coming weekend!

If you're in the area this Saturday and you like old-style country music, drop in! The Folly is a pretty magical place. :)

Also if you have any frisket/masking fluid advice, I'm all ears! Boy oh boy do I have bad luck with this stuff. The yellow-colored fluid was ...

Comic: Stress Eating

I picked up a new hobby last night.

If you’re white or you pass as white, your voices are needed now. There are a lot of people out there who can’t hear beyond the color of someone’s skin; let’s amplify those voices so they don’t miss a word.

I made this comic to post to Instagram sooner rather than later, so I hope you patrons don't mind that I didn't ...

Book Progress!

It's about time I posted a progress report up here. :)

For those who don't know, I'm in Portland, Oregon, on a bit of a writer's retreat (<-- singular possessive, it's just me who's retreating), pecking away at that graphic novel with no name, alongside fellow artists like Erika Moen, Lucy Bellwood and 2019-06-30 06:58:46 +0000 UTC View Post

Comic: Hitchin'

I'm never sure if little quiet stories like this deserve the time it takes to make them into a comic, but I figured that it was good practice for me on Procreate anyway.

There's something about the east coast that I think makes people instantly react to strangers with a bullshit defense. And there's something about the rest of the country that gives a little bit of room for those people. There's no wrong way to say "no," I guess, but I was disappointed in myself for not giving thi...

Is There A Vet In The House??

Hmmm yeah I guess it's "in the house," not "in the audience" usually? Oh well, audience fits better!

I'm looking for a seasoned veterinarian who would be happy to answer a bunch of questions about... secret cat stuff.

Don't worry! It doesn't have to do with Pip or Ellie, or Flapjack, or any real cats. Just a fictional cat. In that book I'm writing.

SUCH UPDATE MUCH TRAVEL

I've had a lot to update y'all on, but every time I start to write up an update, something else gets updated. I think things are settled enough for now to share. Here's the list!

BOO! It’s me.

We’ve only got three more BOO! It’s Sex updates before the end! I’m working on #94 today and remembered this set of WEBTOON rules stuck to the front of my BOO binder:

  • no penetration of any kind
  • no female nipples
  • no genitalia
  • tasteful side boob is ok
  • abs are cool
  • abstract metaphors are good
  • aim for 12-year-old audience

... and thought it’d ...

Graphic Novel Progress

Last night I spent a few hours listening to podcasts and music while sketching up the secondary characters in the graphic novel I'm working on. It's weirdly difficult for me to write their dialogue without giving them faces first. Imagine if I wrote prose novels!

If you've been a patron for awhile you already know this, but in May I'm shelving a big project that's been taking up much more time than I'd expected, in order to make space to work on this book. I regret that I haven't h...

I'm in LA! (And updates for November!)

I'm in LA and it's warm and I love it.

I'm out here for Patrecon tomorrow and Saturday, and next week I'll be in San Diego for the annual ISCA caricature convention! Will I see any of you here?

I was on the fence about doing ISCA this year because I'm devoting as much time as I can to writing this book....

BEACH PARTY SKELETON COSTUME

It's no secret that I throw a pretty serious Halloween every year. This year we threw a blacklight party and I wanted my costume to glow, so a skeleton in a fluorescent bikini was the obvious answer.

I could've paid $40 for a black bodysuit with a skeleton already printed on it, but instead I paid $20 for a black bodysuit and $4 for a yard and a half of white felt, and cut out + hot glued a bunch of bones onto my body. Luke and I kind of have an unspoken no-premade-costumes rule!

Inktober #1: 304 West German Street

This inktober is gonna be a tough one for me this year! The book I'm working on is going to be very environment-heavy, and environments are NOT my forte. So I'm going to practice drawing houses, rooms, and other scenes for the rest of the month, mostly from Shepherdstown.

This is the house that inspired the very book I'm writing, so it seemed fitting to start here. This is me drawing it how I normally would - clumsily, impatiently, and with a brush pen. My goal is to draw places like thi...
