H'oooohhhh busted.
Don't ask why the drummer is suddenly shorter than Bat Boy, I was still learning proportions back then, hmmm de doo.... !
I'll be in Arizona for the next two weeks, by the way!! No doubt you'll get some photos and drawings and stuff. :)
Oh! And if you're visiting from outside of Patreon (I decided to make this post public), you can continue to read Bat Boy by pledging at the $3/month level. You can even 2016-11-07 05:40:00 +0000 UTC

I was out sick earlier this week, but I was DETERMINED to get well enough to make it to at least ONE figure drawing evening, and last night was it!
We did a bunch of 10-minute poses and then a few 20-minutes, plus one long pose at the end. I dragged out a black Prismacolor Art Stix (how do you make that singular >:| ) for a couple of these, to fill in the shadows a little faster. I prefer these t...

Hey gang!! I've slung notifications EVERYWHERE so I apologize if this is the BILLIONTH TIME you've heard this from me, BUT!! The Kickstarter campaign for books 9 & 10 has finally launched!
I'm doing a super short campaign this time - just through next week! - so that we can get these books into your hands as fast as possible. This will be a small run of...

Hey, hi! As you may already be aware, I've decided to share some of my old comic strips with you over the next several months, starting with The New Adventures of Bat Boy.
I'm gonna TL;DR you first: The New Adventures of Bat Boy* is a strip I wrote & drew for the Weekly World News back in 2005, until they went tits-up in 2007. (They still exist, just not on paper.) If you'd like to read the rest of them, I'll be sharing...

If you follow me on Twitter, you may already know that I made a big-deal impulse buy on the last day of my trip: an iPad Pro and Apple's Pencil.
I had brunch with Rich Stevens and Ren Caldwell on Thursday at my favorite restaurant in Northampton, The Green Bean. Ren reviews Apple products for iMore (her hand-drawn article on the Pencil was what sold me on it earlier this year), and ...

Hello, fellow sweaters! Or maybe you're not sweating; maybe you're south of the equator, or in far north Canada or Finland. But over here on the 39th latitude, it's just barely tolerable to leave the house after 10 am.
Which is fine by me, because miraculously this old house has central air, and I'm busy working hard on the contents for the last two softcover GWS books!
Of course, I need a little help. These final two books are going to be moderately lean - I don't have as much bon...

Hey y'all! Commissions are open (but limited) at the $50 and $100 levels, for black-and-white and color, respectively! This will be offered through June and July, because I really really miss drawing. :)
I'll be posting process photos with notes for the $20 and up levels (so if you get a commission, you'll also get to see what it looked like in progress!). I'm posting this one for everyone so you can see what the $20+ levels will receive through June & July. :)
If y...

I nearly forgot Hazel's birthday yesterday!! Happy belated birthday, Hazel!!
Here's a quick ballpoint sketch I did of her Tuesday, after my yoga class.
I make it a point not to get to know the people in my classes, because I consider that time sort of sacred; yoga is a very isolated, personal exercise to me, even though I attend classes with up to a dozen people in them.
As I was walking out of class Tuesday, skillfully avoiding conversation with my class...

Hey class! Let's draw some hands!
Between what I know about drawing hands and what I learned from other artists' tutorials (I happen to like this one a good bit), these were the most important bits, IMO. Let's go!
Basic Shapes
The basic shapes I see in a hand are a softened square (palm), a softened triangle (thumb meat), circles (knuckles) and lines (fingers). I've seen ...

Hi-ho, patrons! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and a helluva New Year's Eve!
It's been a LONG while since I've posted, in part because of the holidays, but also because I've been prepping to teach a college course in illustration at my alma mater, which starts this afternoon! (Depending on your time zone.)
While you'll probably see one or two posts relating to the class no matter what level you're pledging, I've added a new patron level that allows you to take a li...

Did you know that October is also #inktober? It is! It's a thing!
This month I'm gonna participate (just on the weekdays!) by doing an image search for one word each day and finding an image to ink in my own style.
All patrons ($1+) will be able to see the #inktober drawings, plus a little information about the tools I'm using to ink said drawings, and you can suggest the next word I'll sea...

Apparently the file with the close-up faces at the bottom didn't show in the last update, so here's that bonus!
I'll likely be sharing one more Toronto update to all tiers soon, and then will return to showing a bit more secretive sneak peeks to $5+ patrons and giving a smattering of updates to the $1+ tier. Just a heads-up!

Thanks so much to everyone who submitted images for my most recent character design homework! You were a huge help! I picked out two (well, kinda three) to exaggerate for my class.
Special thanks to Amelia and Mink (and her be-kilted husband Andy) for supplying me with these stellar full-body photos! And for allowing me to share them here!
By the way, if anyone's local to me (Shepherdstown, WV), my local comic shop is holding their inaugural Free Comic Book Day and I'll be there with Monica Ga...

Hey y'all! This week's homework assignment for my character design class was to caricature someone famous, and I decided to make my favorite mortician, Caitlin Doughty, the subject of my project! (Internet famous is still famous, right?)
I hope you know about her already, but in case you don't, you can find her YoutTube series, "Ask a Mortician," right here: https://www.youtube.com/user/OrderoftheGoodDeath...

I forgot that there's an option to show these creations to the public! If you're not a patron, this will give you an idea of what I generally share with patrons here. :)
I started taking my online character design course with Steven Silver last Monday, and our first assignment was due today. We were to create a cowboy/cowgirl character, utilizing a number of tips Silver went over in his video lessons, one of which was the golden mean (look it up!). This is something I should've known about year...

I accidentally screen-cap'd a shot of Wednesday's strip http://www.girlswithslingshots.com/comic/gws-1971/ before starting in on the shading and background treatment, so I figured I'd give you a before-and-after peek to see the difference.
It's not HUGE, but I think the shading of the foreground and vignetting of he background makes the image pop a lot more. :)
$5+ patrons, if you called dibs on one of t...

Hey y'all! I Didn't want to rush my next storyline before I left for Austin (you'll see why later), so I'm stuck with a sheet of Bristol board, a pencil, and my brain to create something for tomorrow.
I wanna do something cute featuring Sloth Erin and I'd love to do a little fan/Patreon service; what would you ask Sloth Erin if you could talk to her?
Comment below of you have an idea!
