Probl-o-Matic #504: "Be Yourshellf"

Thinking of offering each panel of the strip as tier rewards. Is it a bad idea to split them up?

Thinking of offering each panel of the strip as tier rewards. Is it a bad idea to split them up?
2018-08-20 15:54:01 +0000 UTC View PostI'm thinking of doing something special for strip #500, but I'm not certain what. I'd love to consider any suggestions! One was to do a livestream of me drawing while answering questions. I've never done that before. Maybe I'll do one for practice, one of these weekends?
Any other thoughts/ideas?

This past week, I've begun experimenting with updates by skipping the "ink" stage of drawing. So far, so good, I would say - though there is always a risk of getting funky print results with pencil, so I'm not 100% certain how this will look when Volume 3 is ready to ship. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. For now, I'm happy to save an extra hour per strip which means I can do more, faster. My goal (for as long as I can tolerate it) is to update five times per week. This is in hopes of in...

Had some trouble with the line in panel 4. Originally it was "In comics, guys are supposed to crash into cute girls, not walls!" Upon reflection, that could be read as breaking the fourth wall (although Greg was commenting on comics/anime in general, not the one he's in. He doesn't know he's in a comic. It's not one of those stories.)
Eventually I used the line as written in panel 1, which I worry is is a bit too much setup for the "Greg being single" storyline in volume 3. Ah, well. It should...

I'm hoping to find time to do an in-progress video discussing how this was made. It's really interesting!

The dialogue was a bit clunky in this one, so I cleaned it up "in post". The lips were also surprisingly challenging to get right. Although I'm not 100% happy with that detail, the punchline gave me a good chuckle. Sometimes in comics, you've got to go with "good enough." =P

To save time, I attempted to ink panels 3&4 digitally. I don't think the results are a huge upgrade, so I'll stick with Microns for now. I'm especially fond of how panel 1 turned out. Atmospheric tones can work so nice for backgrounds, in place of line art.
Extra proud of this one! It hit the front page of /r/comics, which is no small feat. https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/7urg9e...

This one is a true story! As soon as I heard the barista/cashier say my name, I froze. Had I already told him, without paying attention? There was no memory of it. Instead, it seemed possible (and horrific) that they had a database with names associated with certain drinks. I doubt many Georges enjoy "Iced coffee with light ice and two pumps of classic syrup." Still, "Star Box" certainly shouldn't be keeping records of that crap. Do they think it's endearing to have your name remembered, stored ...

A video discussing my experiences posting comics on Webtoon in 2017, and some plans for this year!

Progress for the Greg (version 2) plushie this weekend! We're using vinyl for his face, sweater material for his hoodie, and fleece for the rest of his body. It's taken a ton of hard work and patience, and I'm sure there's a ton of room for improvement in the future, but I'm super happy with how he's turning out. =) I'll be taking pre-orders soon!

From now on, I'll be posting the original inks for every strip. Each is drawn on 12x9(ish) paper, and are for sale for $100 each. Get in touch if you want one!
2018-01-29 15:26:15 +0000 UTC View PostAdding a new (actual) "reward" to the $1 tier. Everyone who donates $1 or more per month will have their name included as a contributor to any book I publish (I'll review the Patron list at the time of printing). If you'd prefer to use a pseudonym, or would like to remain anonymous, just let me know!
