WIP art life update

Here’s a painting from an automatic drawing that I’ve been nibbling on this past week.

It’s been kind of a chaotic week. I hung the art show at Angel city brewery and it was just not smooth sailing.

It seemed like every step of the way was more difficult than it needed to be.

They had to cancel the opening at the last minute because of scheduling conflicts.

Honestly it was just annoying and I can’t talk about it too much because I’m sick of thinking about i...

And now for something totally different...

It's a hard life out there for a dark/surrealist/abstract painter. What's a weirdo to do?

Well, I take other commissions outside of my desired realm.

However, I loved doing this one.

The origin of this was teaching little kids to paint kitties.

I've learn my lesson the hard way, that if you want (especially little girls) to pay pay attention in art class, you have to have a really cute subject to paint.

I've consulted with our overlords as Disney and ...

Process and Music "Lose Face" From the Covid Collection

This piece is definitely a study to be developed into a larger painting. I'm really into the color and concept of it. But there's definitely things I'm going to change about it too.

I had been really studying the warm/cool dynamic of color mixing in preparation for the color lesson for Intro to Drawing Bad Art for a few weeks before I got sick. So in my covid haze I could just see it.

Automatic Drawing Submissions

Atom St. George

My friend Atom uses what I like to call "Automatic Gradients" as a starting point for his paintings. Instead of scribbling he creates these little patches of color. Sometimes he throws paint around or presses the brush into the paint in random patterns. Then he spends a lot of time adding form and detail.

The painting in the picture Is an an ink and acrylic piece I did in late 2020.

I did a few ink wash paintings with ghosts in them around that time. They actually stemmed from me studying perspective. I would draw these old houses to try and find the perspective lines a...

Color-Demo

This is the demo video for the color lesson in the Intro to Drawing Bad Art Course.

This is the first painting demo in the intro to drawing bad art course.

And its my first real time, acrylic painting demo!

Since we're talking about color, I thought it made the most sense to do a demo where I'm using color the way I normally would. In an acrylic painting.

I recap the lesson and talk about color for the first 20 minutes or so.

I tried to stay focused o...

Color-Intro to Drawing Bad Art

It's time to enter the kingdom of color! This is honestly My favorite video I've done for the Intro to Drawing Bad Art Course.

In this video my goal was to do a broad overview of the basics of color theory for artists, and then give some practical advice on how to approach color.

Color is all about controlling and balancing Hue, Chroma and Values. In this video I explore each of those characteristics of color. And then demonstrate my approach to finding that balance.

"Language Game" Covid Collection painting walkthrough

I'm putting together some videos of the Covid Collection (the paintings I did while I had covid)

A little different format for this one. I was going to just post the timelapse with music like I normally do. But I really wanted to say something about this piece because of the strange circumstances I painted it under.

BUT, I had already made the song and I liked it. So I went with both.

Painting Walkthrough-Angel City Brewery Beer Can Commission

In this video I walk you through the process behind the beer can design I was commissioned to paint.

I think it will be useful if you have to work with a client, or if you have deadlines, or need to come up with a system to finish art pieces.

I hope you enjoy.

*** Art Life Update:

I've been slammed with work lately. Ever since covid I've felt like I'm playing catch up. I have a few shows coming up, including one I'm curating (which is the show I talk about i...

The Return of Mr. 6

I finally got this guy in a frame. If you remember, way back in July I found this beautiful frame for him, but I couldn't attach hanging hardware to it. So I put him in a temporary frame, hung him in the gallery, and ordered a new frame.

It took a while to arrive, and I couldn't find any time to go in and swap him out. Then I got covid, then I had to play catchup.

Well, anyway, I finally did it. So I'll give the choir a little time to have first dibs on him.

Time lapse and Music- New Girl

Timelapse and painting process for my painting "New Girl" part of the Covid collection.

I started with a very loose gesture drawing from a model. Then I let it sit for a while till I forgot about the reference. then I started defining it. my goal was to kind of abstract the figure. I finished this piece when I was sick.

It's part of the covid collection which you can see exclusively in the Secret Choir sho...

How I set up my palette for acrylic painting

In this video I'll walk you through how I set up my palette for acrylic painting. One of the big complaints people have about acrylic painting is how quick it dries on the palette.

And that is an issue. One of the ways I deal with it is by using Sta-Wet Palettes. It's kind of a process to set up, but it really makes your paints last longer. I've have piles of paint stay workable for a month in these palettes.

There are other ways to keep your acrylic paints wet while w...

The Godfather-Art Life and Lives

Grab a cannoli and some drawing supplies! It's time for another Art Life and Lives! In this one we're talking about the making of the Godfather.

In my last Art Life and Lives about Ego is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday, I talked about the inevitable failure that comes with the territory in art.

I recently read Leave the Gun Take the Cannoli by Mark Seal about the making of the Godfather. And while there is a lot of interesting stories in that book (film history, the mafia, the tension ...

Yes, and? Some thoughts on improvisation in the creative process

I've been doing all these Alla Prima studies lately. This is the first one of those paintings that really got the ball rolling. I was working on my fantastic beast, and designing my "Crossroads Joe" monster in photoshop. And I was just bored and wanted to paint. I decided to commit to painting something in one sitting AKA Alla Prima.

I think this painting took 2 or 3 hours in total.

I'll do a video specifically about Alla Prima painting eventually. But in this video I wanted...

My Covid Experience in Paintings

I'm finally feeling better and testing negative. The worst thing about covid to me is the brain fog. I've had it twice and both times I just couldn't think straight. The first time I had it, last year, I couldn't even paint.

What was interesting this time was that the brain fog seemed to only affect my ability to read and write and that type of stuff. It took me like 2 hours to write a paragraph. But I could paint just fine. And it kind of felt like the painting side of my brain h...

Seduction and Chaos

This started out as an automatic drawing and then I developed the image more and more. The cool thing about the automatic drawing process, especially when applied to a longer painting process like this piece, is that you can really get to some interesting and surprising places in your mind. And it all starts with a few scribbles.

Anyways. I am finally getting over being sick and was able to frame her and put her in the Secret Choir Only Shop.

I'm also working on a process walkthro...

My favorite painting from 2015

This is the piece I'm the most proud of from 2015. Beautiful Nightmare. It's a combination of spray paint, paint markers, and acrylic. It was a real breakthrough for me in translating my pen and ink work to canvas.

I was teaching myself how to draw and paint at this point.

I liked the feeling of pen and ink, the images seemed to emerge from just scribbling on paper with them. But I couldn't translate that to painting on canvas.

When I'd try to create with paint a...
