Organic Form Timelapse-Intro to Drawing Bad Art

I almost forgot to share this timelapse of the first drawing I did for the Organic Form lesson. In my opinion this drawing was way better than the one I ended up with in the demo. I think because this one came out more as like an automatic drawing. I wasn't trying to explain what I was doing I was just doing it.

Paintings from a Motel Room

For the past few days I've been staying in a motel room here in Los Angeles. I took a staycation to get into a new environment. This was kind of an experiment for me. I've been planning it for a while. I shot a lot of video while I was there so I'll say more about the experience and why I did it in the video. But here's some of the sketches and studies I did while I was there.

Some shots from the show!

Here’s my piece on the wall at Dark Art Emporeum. The show was fun! Saw some old friends. Bought a scorpion keychain. Here’s the link to my piece at the show if your interested in this piece. There’s a lot of other great pieces in the show as well. Shop around!

I took some videos of this show and the last show I did. I think I’ll edit them into a video.

Demo: Form-Intro to Drawing Bad Art

To wrap up on form, here's a real time drawing while talking about form. I go over the basic forms, how they relate to perspective, ellipses, using cross contours, the line of balance and proportion, and then I do a "doodle" drawing using organic forms. During that I talk about how form relates to value, which is the next stop on this bad art train.

In the beginning I also talk about my intention in doing these intro to drawing bad art classes. I think that drawing is the most valuable ...

Organic Form-Intro to Drawing Bad Art

This is the second lesson about Form. In the first lesson we talked about how to break complex subjects down into bigger geometric forms, how to combine forms, how to manipulate the basic forms.

This builds on that manipulation. When drawing things from reference, some times it's not intuitive what geometric form to use. The elements of some subjects will vary, or not be as identifiable as the human mannequin.

Most of these things exist in nature. Insects, mollusks, li...

Process: "Old Wound" Tiny Acrylic 2

This piece was the longest piece I worked on in this series. There were 3 false starts. The string thing, the decalcomania, then the portrait I started over it. Sometimes it just comes down to "make it more simple...stupid."

I like that I can see my reflection in the varnish.

I got the title from the episode of Mad Men where Don Draper is pitching the idea for a slide show projector to Kodiak, the Carousel. He says

"Nostalgia – its delicate, but potent. Tedd...

Tiny Terrors: History of Miniature Painting, Painting Process and Why I paint small

I participate in Tiny Terrors every year at the Dark Art Emporium. This year in particular I got carried away. I usually paint pretty small anyways, A typical size is 5x7 inches or smaller. I went for 3x3 inches for this show. I can only show one piece, but I did 7. At the end of the process of painting all those, when I put them in their little frames, I kept getting this strange impulse to hold...

A Bunch of New Tiny Paintings !!

I already paint pretty small. but I wanted to go even smaller for this year's Tiny Terrors show at the Dark Art Emporium. I could only put one piece in the show, but I ended up doing 7. I got carried away. And after I finished painting them, I got carried further away when I went down a rabbit hole about the history of miniature paintings. More about that in tomorrow's video.

Here's a Choir Exclusive link to these p...

This pieces is available exclusively from the Dark Art Emporium starting June 10th.

Tiny Little Painting Timelapse and Music

I do a painting every year for the Tiny Terrors art show at the Dark Art Emporium  in Long Beach, CA. It's a large group show of artwork under 8x10 inches (including the frames.) I got carried away this year in two respects. 1. I worked even smaller than I normally do (3x3 inches) and 2. I did about 7 paintings (all of which will be shared soon.)

After making all these paintings I got kind of fascinated with t...

Rosey Painting Timelapse+Future Choir Happenings+Mitch Hedberg on Cooking vs. Farming+a peek behind the curtain about creating these videos

I didn't do a walkthrough for this one. The process was very similar to After Party Delerium. So check that out for more info about the painting process. I'm going to give a kind of behind the scenes of what goes into making the videos of these paintings and my background in filmmaking.

This is the last one of this newest series of paintings! I've got a bunch of canvases and panels that I've been prepping and starting on for the n...

After Party Delirium Painting Walkthrough

Semi-step-by-step walkthrough of the process of this painting. I talk about the underpainting and  grisaille (grayscale) method that I use to build up the paint before adding color. I also talk about trying Golden Open Acrylics for the first time.

Open Acrylics are acrylic paintings that dry slower so that you can blend them more like oils.

Painting Walkthrough: Reflections by the Sea

Here's the whole process video of "Reflections by the Sea Side" AKA the meat hat painting. I'm jumping this video up in the queue because the gallery wants me to post it on social media to promote the show. But I want the Choir to see it first!

I started it with the atmospheric landscape. Which means I started this around the time I was doing the Intro to Drawing Bad Art lessons about depth and atmospheric perspective. So that would be about February or March?

I remember buying th...

Sweetie Demo May 2023

Another sweetie watercolor demo! A little different on this one. Instead of talking while I was painting, I recorded a voice over after the fact. I was rewatching Mad Men and I just wanted to watch it while I painted. Sorry.

In this video I'm experimenting with two new(ish) mediums/products that I had never really tried before. One was Dr. Ph. Martin's Radient Concentrated watercolor ink View Post

Holy Smoke Show

This is my personal favorite from this latest series of paintings. One guy at the gallery said it made him hungry for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and I took that as high praise. People at the gallery also assume that these paintings are done in oil.

I would love to paint in oil, but my studio is my bedroom. And there are certain fumes that oils emit and there's a smell that oils give off. so I don't want to sleep in the same room as that.

The downside of acrylic is t...

Art Life & Lives Caravaggio-Carnival and Lent (It's not up to you)

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) is the subject of this second installment of Art Life & Lives (hit me with a better title suggestion if you got one.)

The idea of these is to reflect on some of the wisdom or insight I find in these books before the information evacuates my brain.

This one ended up being more biographical than I plan to make these videos, but I couldn't help talking a lot about his life because it's so wild.

He was born into relig...

Full: Process video- Holy Smoke Show

The beginning of this video looks the same as the last video, but it is a different video and painting. Straight forward Process video of my painting "Holy Smoke Show" (named by Choir member Mallory.) No narration on this one, just some sweet sounds and visuals of art being made with a little jazzy lo-fi/experimental/industrial music I made.

I started by creating a rubbing on paper of concrete texture. I fixed the paper to a wood panel with heavy acrylic gel. Gessoed it using clear gess...
