Chapter 18 -- Mistakes Were Made
We were almost to the stairs leading down to the deck with the dance club when I felt the ship lurch, causing me to grip Brian's arm even tighter as my compromised balance sent me wobbling, with even more associated laughing.
"How many drinks did you have?" He asked me, letting me lean against his chest for a moment as I got used to the ship's movement again.
"Three? I think?" I thought for a moment...

Chapter 17 -- Belle of the Ball
I looked at the glass in my hand and frowned.
To be honest, I've never been much of a drinker. Sure, I'd had a wild night here or there with my friends, or the occasional wine cooler to wind down at the end of a long day at home, but I was normally a 'one-and-done' kind of person.
Unfortunately, it seemed the Golden Goose was intent to keep that 'one-and-done' at a 'none-and-done' level instead since every attempt to get anything alcoholic had...

“The Alliance loves these little hellholes just a little too much,” complained Corporal Perkins for the twenty-seven millionth time. Or almost, anyway.
“Knock it off, Perkins!” I exclaimed. Several of us were gathered in the PX, trying to enjoy lunch. Perkins wouldn’t shut up. “Perkins, you’ve only been on this dirt ball for a week. You’re not allowed to complain until you’ve been here at least a month.”
“Says wh...

I made it to my room and sort of threw myself at the bed, pretty much like I’d been doing for fifteen years. Big mistake. My bra gave up holding things in on the first bounce and my new accessories assaulted me. I almost turned into a joke punchline with two black eyes before I got my hands up and wrangled—things.
“Damnit,” I whispered. My wrangling wasn’t that good, the heifers were loose under my shirt, and my bra was sitting on top of them, more or less around my neck. I wo...

Chapter 3
Edited by: Julia Miller
I walked into my room, kicking my shoes and throwing myself on the bed. It's not fair, I never wanted to be a girl, but it doesn't seem like I have a choice.
The gem was part of a much bigger artifact, something legendary that no one believed to exist. Only after what happened did Dad start looking into the gem and found the truth behind it in a newly discovered ancient Egyptian text.
The amulet of Isis is the symbol of Isis’s power ...

Chapter 16 -- The Golden Goose
There were many things that had me on edge Thursday morning.
There was the makeup I'd spent half an hour getting right. Not that most people would consider that too terribly long for cosplay makeup -- and it wasn't -- but it was hardly my normal morning routine.
There was the way the lingerie I'd swallowed hard and steeled myself before donning felt next to my skin. The cotton stuff from the day before h...

I felt dazed and sour. Being on the football field wasn’t as dangerous and scary as the thought of the sort of social gymnastics people like Joanna excelled at. Lee Frick had done some kind of verbal judo on me, and now I had a date to go see a movie with him. At the drive-in! In his van!
It wasn’t like Jake and I had never gone to movies together without dates, but this was different. Lee had asked me, and I guess I couldn’t figure out how to refuse him. It wasn’t that he used ...

Chapter 15 -- Final Fitting
"Stop it."
"I'm not doing anything."
"Well, stop it anyway," I said, glaring at Brian for a brief moment before turning my attention back to the road. He still had the same stupid smirk plastered across his face he'd been wearing when I'd gotten back home the day before, bags in hand, not all of them particularly subtle about what was inside.
I was never going underwear shopping with Maria again.
"Are they that different from--"

“Hi, Pete,” said Joanna, her face visible from under the door. She twiddled her fingers at me in a cheerleader wave.
“How did…” I started to ask, but Megan interrupted.
“When the guys couldn’t find you, we knew where you must be.” Her head was now visible beside Joanna’s.
“Rats,” I said. I sat back so I could extend my feet to the floor. My legs cramped a bit, but I felt even worse everywhere else.
“You’re the only ‘boy’ in the schoo...

Chapter 14 - Maria
*Bzzzzzzzzt*
I released the buzzer and waited, hoping the third time was the charm. I was about to hit it again when I heard a click, and the speaker next to the panel of buttons came to crackly life.
"Door's open, come on up," said a low-quality version of Maria's voice, as I heard the chunky clonking of the electric lock on the main door release. I didn't hesitate to push the door open and head up the flight of...

We arrived at Gail’s house, and she stopped in front of the iron gate before the gate opened automatically. Gail then pulled the car through the gate and stopped. We both left the car, and Gail handed the keys to the security guard.
I was always amazed by how rich Gail’s family is. Living in a mansion having a brand-new sports car. My family is not poor, it's the opposite but compared to Gail’s family wealth would put our moderate wealth to sha...

The Emerald Gem of Wisdom
My name is Jason Carter, or at least it was. I used to be a boy like any other boy who had just turned 18. As I look down on my body, I ask myself how did this happen?
It was two weeks ago; my grandma had just passed away a couple of days before that. We went to her house to clean it before we sold it. I was in the basement, helping dad clean up when I found a very old wooden box that contained what looked like a gold chain necklace with a huge green, eme...

The room got rowdy and stayed rowdy. I cringed when they cheered the footage showing me taking down Ginger.
“Stomp him! Kick him!” They screamed, even though the film showed me bringing down Bulldog #17 in a textbook clean tackle.
“Way to go, Petey!” they shouted, and someone added, “Blood! I saw blood!”
I glanced at Jake, and he was holding out a hand, palm up for me to give him some skin. I turned away and saw Lee Frick frantically stabbing at the controls on t...

Chapter 13 -- Ol' Smokey
The best-laid plans never seem to survive contact with reality, and so it was with our day at the park.
We had just finished taking a spin on Swamp Thang -- think teacups, but with swamp boats, faster, and the whole thing constantly tilting at odd angles -- when the member of the staff running the ride gathered everyone they could find together to let us know that the opening of the coaster would be delayed for a...

It took nearer three hours than two to reach Latterman Village, in part because Clark belatedly discovered that the easy way to move an unbalanced load in a wheelbarrow is to pull, not push. With Mr. Latterman packed into the bowl of the ‘barrow, and Clark between the arms in leading position, there was less strain on Clark’s own arms and less fatigue.
The Citgo Service Station at the end of town arrived just as Clark found a rhythm he could have kept up all day. He was almost sorry...

Dad arrived home while I was outside playing pickle with Linda with Donna as the girl in the middle. We kept the game kind of low-key so Linda could keep up and make a few catches of my soft throws.
Donna sneered at me at one point. “You still throw like a girl,” she said.
I snorted, “You try throwing around these volleyballs.”
“Boobies!” Linda snickered. “Jonny’s a girl now and has big boobies!”
“Don’t tell the neighbors,” Donna chided her, but...

Jake demonstrated how well Baby Blue could scoot, taking us out the back way from his neighborhood and joining the highway partway up the long straight climb north of town that led to a series of switchbacks. The noise from the open windows became a roar as Jake accelerated up the long pull.
We probably hit eighty on the straightaway, but I felt relaxed. Jake was a driver I could trust. I could feel and hear that the car still had top left when Jake eased the throttle to take the first ...

Chapter 12 -- Bog Bottom
It took me a while to figure out where we were heading. I'd lived in Bayonet for almost a decade, but I'd grown up further north, closer to Alexandria. Brian, on the other hand, had lived his entire life relatively local, and knew the back streets and little side roads like the back of his hand. He was avoiding the worst of them since we were in my car rather than his truck, but it was still an adventure of unnamed pla...

I cut up veggies for salad, we eat a lot of rabbit food as Dad sometimes calls it, but both Donna and I are teenagers and no zits between us. I love raw carrots, and you can make a wonderful salad just from turnips and spinach. We had more choice for this one though, carrots, red onions, cucumber, cabbage, yellow peppers and those little radishes to bite back.
Mom busied herself with a sauce for the pasta and made commentary on our purchases. “You came through like a trooper, Joni. I ...

Chapter 11 -- B Minus
On any normal day, someone walking into my bedroom would be greeted by a whole lot of boring. Plain white walls, in deference to not wanting to re-paint when we eventually move out. Twin bed with no headboard, a burnt orange comforter and matching checked pillowcases (or an equally earthy red on off weeks,) discount store rug so my feet don't freeze on the faux wood slat linoleum when I get up. A couple statuettes from special editions of games, and my little books...

Light may move faster than sound, but I heard the click of the switch and the hum of the fluorescents kicking on well before the light struck my eyes and set me blinking.
“What the?!”
I grimaced as I stood up, not needing to wait for my eyes to adjust to know who was in the kitchen with me. “Ah, hey Jimmy!”
“Chris, that you?”
“Umm, yeah?”
“Jeezus!”
I stood stock still, a slice of cold pepperoni pizza in hand, as my roomie made a...

The light came at me like a scene from a baseball movie where the batter has a fear of the ball. It got bigger and brighter and more solid looking, and there was another universe inside it!
A blonde girl who looked a bit like me but younger (I had never been younger than I was at the moment) seemed to be bent over something like a laptop, but I didn’t have time to see anything else because a ball of light as big as the moon hit me.
Terrified, I screamed. “My God, it’s going ...

I thought I’d left Dad at the rear of the lot with the new arrival of used cars from California, but there he was on the concrete apron in front of the showroom windows with Mom and my sisters standing around a blue car. He must have jogged to catch up with me before I got here.
Everyone was grinning, and Dad made a pumping motion with his fist. He yelled at me, “I promised you a car, didn’t I?” and he pointed at the blue one. Jordan and Molly cheered for me, bouncing around lik...

Chapter 10 -- Bitties
"ShitshitshitshitSHIT! YES!" I let out a whoop as my kart crossed the finish line, narrowly bumping TimSkittles' own out of the way and granting me victory.
"Well, monkeyfarts," Tim said, his voice tinny and scratchy over his cheaper headset.
I duplicated the dance my avatar was doing as she stood atop the podium, waving her trophy and smiling.
It was a hard-won victory, too. Tim was an expert at PlumberKart Ultra, and usually creamed the rest of ...

I sat at the counter of the bar I’d never been in before and sipped whisky I didn’t like, listening to people I didn’t want to know talk about what was wrong with the world.
One man was certain that something he called “wokeness” would destroy everything that was worthwhile, though he couldn’t or wouldn’t say what being woke meant. “They talk about it all the time,” he insisted, “and they don’t explain what it is either.” But when asked who they were he ...

I had to get up and do something or just sit there until Mom or Donna came in to chivvy me into some other girly activity. Like painting my nails, maybe. This thought caused me to look at my nails, and I was annoyed to see that I had torn a nail and hadn’t even noticed it. Okay, that got me up and moving again. I got out my clippers and trimmed the torn bits off then used an emery board to smooth the nail edge, so I didn’t tear it again.
I’ve always been a little fussy about my na...
