and sugar is introduced... this scene got a little bit of work-over; it's been a little strange working on a story concept that i came up with quite a while ago, actually. fresh meat was something i thought of during drop-out's scripting phase, and it was originally written at the top of drop-out's document.
i drew the first concept of this scene on october 6th, 2015, which i dug up here:

this page was sort of a doozy due to the panel count... the dissociation sequence was not originally in the thumbnail, but even then, i'd broken the soft limit of 5 rows of panels.
i will admit that the main reason i added it was because of the idea i had for drawing later for the overview after this comic is finished; i'm hoping to be able to experiment a bit with one concep...

so when i ended the intake scene i thought, "wow that took a LOT more pages than i thought it would. i need to speed this up and just get to the supporting cast."
which was technically, supposed to be 2 scenes off. i went over what i'd written in the script, highlighted everything i thought had the potential to be cut or edited, and showed it to my wife for her thoughts on if i should NOT cut any of it.
she told me that she thought i should keep ...

1) this is the first comic that i'm doing with thumbnailing it in advance first. i wanted to thumbnail all of it before starting buuuttt i ran into various snags. most of it the script is thumbnailed out, basically all i have to do is the closing portion.
i'm guessing it'll be about 11 pages, but i'll say how many it is in hard numbers when i finish those.

familial stranger: thoughts

this comic didn't get many cuts.
going into it, i knew it was going to follow a basic 4-part formula - preface, processing, plot, processing - and that was going to be a bit longer. i didn't feel too bad about it taking a while because i knew lola wouldn't be getting anything besides side comics from now on.

dynamic poses tutorial

i regret not including many other figures in pose-drawing examples besides dupe, but i would rather call it done than have it lay around almost finished for another three months!

one down, about four to go. the self-critique and character design tutorials i am totally unsatisfied with, and am starting the process of rewriting and redrawing those two.

while this advice may seem a bit "off" or unexpected for people who have watched streams where i barely sketch as i'm drawing, i am ...

september poll

character design streams: same as last month. i noticed a lot of people liked these ones, so i figured i'd offer to just continue them for another month.

dev streams: kind of like character development streams, but more generalized to be more workable w/different output and context.
can be question-and-answer about canon, elaboration/development for certain characters/stories, or concept art for in-the-work stuff.
this option would stretch on as the plan...

hey folks. thanks for the patience last month, i think i'm back on track now.
i'm just gonna put the most important update-relevant thing up front first so anybody not interested in rambling can skip the rest of this. i was going to try switching to weekends this month, but made the choice to put it off for at least another month. while considering it, i did figure out how i would make "weekends" WORK on a schedule that has me doing stuff every day.
basically, i might switch back and forth...

another fad strip... this one i've been chipping away at for about 3 months now.
i have a few joke strips about characters that are also half done, but this one seemed like it would take the least amount of time to finish while still not being like... 5 panels. also, because it had screamy faces.

not much to say about this page. the nurses: koala, aye-aye. in that order.

when i was first designing sugar, i considered making her an aye-aye instead of a tarsier... she'd probably look similar to this nurse, which kind of makes me regret NOT choosing that, but... live and learn. she might've looked just a little bit TOO goth, then.

character development: sugar

familial stranger is the first canonical revisitation of sugar and lola since the end of drop-out; however, the story focuses on lola's character development. despite this fact, sugar is present during some of the comic, and she has an undeniably different demeanor.

when i asked myself what the most obvious difference was, i immediately thought: she looks tired.
... which is true. her eyes are almost always half-lidded, and she doesn't emote as often anymore... but she DOES emote in familia...

i did not get to spend nearly as much time with this page as i'd have liked to... which i usually say when i mean "i don't like the shots on this page, and i didn't have time to continue waiting for visuals to pop into my head or redraw them as shots in the dark."
i like for the comics to be more visually cinematic, but without the several weeks that drop-out's buffer used to give me just to plan and think about visual layouts... y'know.

well. this page was a doozy. it was originally going to be around 44 panels because i want this scene over with... but i guess that'll be next week.

i tried doing differing dizzy effects for panels, and not doing it for all of them, to step it away a bit from the implication that kim had been dosed with a hallucinogenic.

i don't really have a lot to say about this month! i'll be AFK for a week. i made a list of things to do and set aside some medication to use this week because i realized i don't do... almost anything without taking it unless it has a deadline.

sugar reminded me of outis here with the rambling... must be the ADHD.

this should wrap up in about 2-3 pages. when i write outlines or summaries comics, they contain "beats" to hit -- mandatory parts of the story, usually thematic, but sometimes by necessity for the plot.
the beats left here are roughly "being grown up when you don't feel like you even had a childhood" and "found family."

there's a decent amount of development for both lol...

well. here it is. finishing this up took a lot longer than i expected... probably because it has a lot more panels than what i judge as my average/minimum.
i was hoping to add at least 1 or 2 extra panels with the extra time, but i'm ass tired, and i'd already cut several panels during the sketching phase just because i knew this was edging on my "hard limit" for panel count to avoid overworking myself.
