Animation Easter Eggs in my (+Tom Scott's) videos.

Some animations in my videos are done by William Marler who is the same person who does animations for Tom Scott. I think Tom and I both met Will at the Royal Institution Christmas Lecture filming in 2019 (for which Will also did the title sequence).

Anyway, Will has put out a video showing where he has hidden all sorts of ridiculous jokes and references in our videos. Some of which we knew about. So this is not an exclusive video at all, but I thought you might like to see it and I'll ...

Deleted scene: General Relativity Mishaps video

As you may have noticed my recent video was (juuust under) 40 minutes long. So first of all: thanks for your support so I could make such a beast of a video. It nearly killed myself, Alex (filming and editing) and Will (animations). We got there eventually!

The first rough-cut was actually much longer but I spent ages hacking it down to get it below 40 minutes. The last bit to go was this section which originally would have started at 15:16 in the video.

I was torn because I am al...

Bonus footage from Ellipse Perimeter video.

This starts with some bonus patreon footage I deliberately filmed. You can see it exactly flows off a shot from the main video (although I later had to extend the pause in the main video when I decided afterward to add a "total ellipse of the chart" there). This is me talking about why my approximations are so different for ellipses which are very close to being circles.

And then there is a deleted scene which was going to be in the main video but I decided to take it out at the last mi...

Landmark Numbers: early release and bonus footage

This is a two for one. ONE: The main video will be released publicly in about three hours from now. But I thought you might like an advanced look.

And if you do want to buy the book: I have a favour to ask. We are testing a new system where Maths Gear pushes pre-orders to Warehouse. We think it is all working but it would be great to give it a 'real-world soft test' so if you do fancy ordering Tim's new book, can you do it in the next three hours and let me know how it ...

Bonus footage from tan(prime) greater than prime

This is a video message from me and a deleted scene from my video "What is the biggest tangent of a prime?"

Original video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7eJb8n8zAw

Two more primes have been found which are bigger than the one mentioned in my video. Here is a great write-up from someone who has found both of them:

How the anti-pyschic video was filmed!

As promised, here it is: the behind the scenes footage of the "Are Matt and James anti-psychic?" video. You can watch the original here: https://youtu.be/MrEECYAXRjs

As you can see, there was no cheating but we did have some help to stay in-phase.

And here is the full unedited footage of Matt and James if you want to compare it to the behind-the-scenes version. 2020-05-21 11:13:57 +0000 UTC View Post

Are Matt and James anti-psychic?

I've just made a video with James Grime. We're both in lock-down here in the UK so we decided to make a feature of having to collaborate remotely.

While making the video I had a go-pro just out of shot filming the whole set-up. In 48 hours I will release that footage for my Patreon supporters only.

So you have two days to work out how we made the video. The behind-the-scenes footage will contain major spoilers.

How I filmed+edited my face-down-cards video

Hi folks!

I saw a lot of people were trying to work out how I filmed my latest two-Matts video, and most people got it right. But I thought it might be fun to see the exact details of my edit.

Work-from-home office tour!

Thank you so much for your support during this trying time. As you may have guessed all of my live performance work (and indeed work with schools) has been cancelled. So I'm pretty-much relying on on youtube as my only financial support!

That said: I totally understand that many people have it much worse than me. If you are feeling the financial squeeze I do not mind at all if you need to downgrade your support of Stand-up Maths, or pause it, until you get back on your feet.

Pi Day 2020 bonus footage!

Behold, all of the working out from the end of our day in Newton's house. At least: all that we filmed. I thought it would be fun to just upload everything from Alex's camera (we only had a single hand-held camera in operation) so you can see me copy the terms onto the flip-chart as the team try to get as many done as possible before we get kicked out.

You can also follow along the final adding up in excruciating detail. It starts at 09:57. Enjoy!

Palindrome filming: behind the scenes

I had a lot of interest in how I made the video about the 02/02/2020 palindrome day. And yes, the Matt on the left of frame is flipped. I filmed it twice on the same side of the sofa.

The truth is: I only had one morning to film it and that included going to pick up the paper, markers, clipboard etc from the shops. I was in Seattle to do a show at 2pm and needed to leave the hotel by 1pm to get there in time to set up. So, leaving enough time to edit and upload, I really only had time f...

Graph (network) animation help?

I’m thinking of doing a video about double-landlocked counties in the UK (and states in the USA) and want to use a bit of graph theory.

I think some networks showing how the counties/states all link, and then animating the networks into a more insightful arrangement would look nice and make a good intro to graph theory.

But that would take a while for me to animate. Anyone already fluent in graph plotting software want to help with making some pretty graph animations? Either com...

Bonus video: Why do helicopters have string on the windscreen?

Advanced view: stroboscopic helicopter

My helicopter video is finally out! Thanks for your support.

It took ages to edit and get sorted after we filmed this late last year. Captain Disillusion and I also realised we were working on very similar videos. So we've made this a micro-colab and both briefly appear in the other video. If you support Captain D on patreon you may have already seen their video.

Both videos should go live some time today.

It happened! I was able to get my next video out today. I actually filmed this last November when I was in the USA but have only just managed to get it finished and uploaded.

Deleted scene: möbius loop cogs

Hello! I'm back from a trip to Argentina and I have a glut of videos waiting to go out. First up was the "Are odd-numbered möbius-loop cogs possible?" video which I uploaded a few days ago.

I removed a chunk from the final edit because the scene was making the video too long and was a bit too much of a tangent from the main theme of 'odd cogs'. So I deci...

Filming in Manchester

I’ve spent two days (well, 23 hours total, including sleeping) filming videos in Manchester.

We visited the illusion corridor which went viral a year or so ago. I’m just that on top of the trends (from late 2017).

CLARIFICATION: The person in this corridor photo from yesterday is my camera person Trent. I...
