After logging back in, I looked around for a moment, realising that during the time I had been away, the day had turned to night. There were fewer dwarves walking around outside, even Kangur was still sitting there but he looked sound asleep. But other dwarves I had seen around were gone, making me wonder if there were quests that were dependent on the time of the ingame-day, either to complete or to receive. But for now, I had rats to hunt, so I stepped away from the pillar I ha...

Peering into the darkness, I tried to use the same magic I had used before, to create an outlook from another shadow, my variant of the water-mirror spell. I had done so before, so I thought I would be able to do so again. The difference, back then, I had simply shifted my viewpoint from one shadow I was able to see into another, now, I wanted to move from one shadow I could see, or rather, a dense pool of Darkness, into a shadow I couldn’t see, was not certain it was actually ...

My eyes blinked open and I was back on my bed, slightly groggy due to the dream-state I had been in for the last couple of hours. Standing up and stretching made the feeling quickly fade and once it was gone, I went downstairs, thinking what to make for dinner. When she heard me on the stairs, Treya noticed that I was going about the house and she started to romp around, looking for some attention, which I gladly gave her. A quick look to the clock showed that I had enough time t...

As I followed Ronar through the hallways of Grey Quarry, I noticed something significant. Before meeting Glonar and completing the quest, the looks directed at me had been hovering between distrustful and hostile, now, they were much more friendly and open. I considered it a curious quirk of the reputation-system, wondering if there was some sort of in-universe explanation for it.
When I realised that the hallways all looked pretty much the same, grey stone, with worked sto...

While the wolves enlarged the small cave they had found, Lenore, Adra and I placed the few wards and defenses against magical detection that we knew around the area. Sadly, neither of us was particularly experienced in that kind of magic, I was quite sure my darkness-magic was suitable for it, but without a lot of experimentation, I didn’t even know what I needed to know. And to experiment on that, I would need an allied mage using some sort of scrying or tracking magic in an a...

I had to blink my eyes for a few times, trying to make sense of what was around me and where I was. There was no feeling of weight, no up or down, just a strange, featureless void, the only indication of existence was a feeling of blowing wind. For a second, I was seriously weirded out, not knowing what to make of things, until I realised where I was. I was in a loading screen and apparently, the developers liked to make fun of players. Luckily, I was only in there for a few seco...

Sadly, even a further search through the cellar failed to reveal more loot and, after a moment of consideration, I decided that, while the whole “Orcish Barbarian Raider”-shtick was funny and something I wanted to stick with, maybe I should wait until I was no longer in such a precarious situation to invoke it. That, and I had neither good fuel, accelerant or even a starter, so setting a fire was complicated anyway.
Thus, defeated, I went to my knees, crawling back out ...

While Lenore was on her scouting-trip, the rest of us waited around, some of the wolves spreading out towards the forest, looking for a good spot for us to set up our own camp. We would be here for some time, so having a good position to spend time while not going after the Centaurs was important, as was securing a supply of food and water.
Lenore soon returned from her preliminary flight, landing on my shoulder and merging into her hallow as soon as possible. Sitting down,...

Once the mole-rat was dead, I closed my eyes for a moment, just focusing on breathing. It had been closer than I wanted to admit to myself, I was down to half health, the dodging had taken almost sixty percent of my stamina and I was completely out of mana. Without Roknar, I would be dead, no matter how perfect I played, dead to an enemy merely three levels above me. Granted, on my level that meant 2.5 times my level, yet I wasn’t pleased.

After our first encounter in the sewers, I curiously was more relaxed than before. While the rat I had killed was plainly disgusting, it gave me something to expect, instead of the strange, anticipatory paranoia, vigilant for whatever the developers of Irminsul had cooked up for me. While I wasn’t quite certain that they wouldn’t be evil enough to add some sort of jump-scare, maybe a zombie leaping from the foul water next to Roknar and me, trying to grab me to drag me into i...

After leaving the Den, we travelled with the wolves, heading back towards the old, imperial road. It would take us about a day, now that the wolves we were travelling with were healthy, to reach it and from there, we would need about two more days to reach the area where the Centaurs were operating. It was beyond the eternally blowing wind, in an area between a lake, currently frozen, and a forest, a strip of land that was similar to the windswept plains but lacking the punishing...

A cracking sound behind me caused me to turn, expecting a third enemy to jump out and attack before we got to safety. But judging by Roknar’s satisfied expression, he was done. After taking another set of teeth from the second dog’s loot bag, I took up position, just in case that last enemy I was expecting would jump at us from the sewer-grate he had just opened.
But, contrary to my expectations, nothing jumped out to attack us and we could slip into the sewers without ...

I had once watched a nature-documentary about ants and their behaviour if their hill, their nest, was ever breached. The milling masses around the arena, as we made our escape reminded me of that behaviour. It also made me think that something with the game’s physics-engine must have bugged out, even if the barrels we had set on fire were some sort of magical, jet-fuel enhanced lamp-oil, there shouldn’t have been as much smoke. But who was I to complain, the hallway we had us...

During the rest of our time in the Main Den, Fresh Snow almost turned into my shadow, asking questions about the way I used my magic and what the Grandmother had taught me. Most of the time, it was rather endearing, her ernest interest flattering and she reciprocated with complete openness, even if the breadth of her knowledge was limited compared to that of her master. But it helped me to better understand the differences between the constructs they created from snowflakes and w...

We didn’t run, not quite. We hurried, but secrecy was still paramount and our naked feet would have made unmistakable sounds on the stone floor. So, we moved as fast as we could, without causing excessive noise.
And, it seemed luck, or maybe the game-developer’s intended scenario, were on our side, we managed to get through the hallways and to the office where I had left the two chalk-circles indicating corpses without the grizzly, visual effect of having them lying aro...

Wind blows across the sand, catching a few grains and carrying them, until they drop back down, the air is hazy with a blistering heat, thanks to the burning sun above. The camera follows the wind, quickly closing in to a sprawling city, the buildings made from sandstone almost identical in colour to the desert sands around. White cloth is used to create shade all around, between buildings and even over some roads.
People are visible, their reddish-blue, almost purple, skin...

My eyes went from the dwarf to the horse-thief and back. Thinking purely logical, the thief would be the better choice, a lowlife should have the ability to help me vanish into the city, whereas the dwarf’s ability to do that was a lot more questionable. Sure, his people had built parts of the city some hundred years ago, but who knew if there actually were those tunnels and such he alluded to.
But at the same time, the thief’s behaviour had been hostile, or rather fear...

Getting my nerves back under control was made a lot easier by a few things. The first, maybe most important of all, was that most of the blood that had splattered my face quickly despawned, leaving only a few spots that were only visible in one of the mirrors in the room. The next was that the body of Witch Face quickly did the same, leaving behind a chalk-outline and a small bag sitting in the middle of it, marking the location of her demise and giving me the spoils for my kill.

Still in a bit of a funk, but enthused to learn more about Ice-Magic, I gave Sigmir a soft kiss and told Fresh Snow to lead on, wishing the others a nice day. Their options for entertainment were rather lacking, but I was quite sure they would be able to spend the time in some way.
Trying to make small-talk as we walked, I asked Fresh Snow what had her so happy this morning. Her tail gave away her glee on being asked, making me grin when I realised that with the wolve...

For the next thirty minutes, real life-time, the Sergeant instructed me on using the halberd and, once I had the basics for that, started shouting for me to use my Rage, to let it guide me. That resulted in my first class ability, Harnessing Rage, and its associated skill, Fighting Rage. It gave me increased Strength and Damage while reducing my Defense and continually draining Mana to keep it active. It was essentially the continuous version of the Power Attack I had learned, I ...

Once Sigmir and I were in our room, the door closed by a conjured sheet of Ice, I stopped, considering. Part of me wanted to resume what I had started a few days ago, before we met the wolves, but there was something I wanted to clear up before it festered within her. While I wasn’t sure if she perceived it as a problem, she might and it might cause her pain, something I was not willing to risk.
Some more hand-waving by me and I was pouring power into a magical form...

The room I was guided in looked like the medieval version of a modern gym, a diverse set of equipment for those who were so inclined to torture themselves on, or maybe get motivated to torture themselves by an instructor. There was even one of those, but seeing him, I had to struggle to keep my poker face, whoever had designed him had a wicked sense of humor.
He was dressed in a dark green uniform, with the eagle-insignia of the Human Empire in gold on his left chest and, t...

The arena of Stormhelm, a monument to Human excellence and their devotion to Kallendra. Looking at it from the outside, part of me wondered how many had been where I was now, getting carted through a wrought iron gate, not knowing if they would ever pass it in the other direction. I noticed that there were letters worked into the arch of the gate and managed to read some of them, praising Kallendra, who was, if I remembered right, the Goddess of honourable combat, duels and prote...

The day was coming to an end in the Wolves’ Den, and they had replenished some of our rations from their stores, even if it was only meat that we got, we were rather happy with it. In addition to that, I had spent over an hour in their nursery, having the wolf-pubs crawl all over me, sniffing around and generally enjoying the simple attention they were getting.

I deliberated some more, ping-ponging between Warlock, Adept, Elementalist, Fighter and Barbarian but not quite coming to a decision. Adept and Elementalist were quite obviously tanks with some magical ability, one with an elemental flavour, the other with an arcane-flavour, which both had some appeal. And then there was the simple fact that, in almost every game, ever, tanks had been a coveted resource, so playing a tank made it a lot easier to find groups to delve into dungeons...

Focusing on the race I wanted to play, I stepped forward, towards the female orc. The screen changed and there was now a mirror and in it, I was able to see myself, only that I was now wearing the guise of an orc and had a variety of sliders and dials to adjust the look of my new character.
Looking over the sliders, I started to play around with them, looking what changed with which slider, not quite focusing on the overall appearance, merely testing them. After a few...

After clicking the “Create Character”-Button, there was a sensation of rushing forward and upward, almost like on a rollercoaster, and moments later, the world dissolved into white light as I hurtled into the sun. At least that was what it looked like to me.
