A brand new episode, and a brand new element of the Simpson's life to introduce the audience to! The Telltale Head is our first look at the Springfield church, although our first glimpse of Lovejoy is not through this, but through an angry mob depicted at the start of the episode:

This is perhaps an appropriate introduction to the character intended as a representation of the show's attitude t...

And so we come to the end of another episode! Another mix of barely recognisable weirdos - Rod Flanders is clearly the standout of the bunch, but I have a soft spot in my heart for Cowboy Bob.
In assembling this image I noticed something strange - a extremely high hat count. Of these fifteen characters, five have hats. That's a new character hat count (NCHC) of 33.3%! Remarkable. And that's not including the baby, who as we discussed, is NOT part of the official count. Also, without eve...

Our final entry in "The Call Of The Simpsons" is this English scientist. I'm afraid I have nothing interesting to say about him as he (and all three of these scientists) are one-timers, as far as I can tell. What a way to finish up the episode.

A sneaky little extra midweek entry for your eyeballs, as we cover these scientists. This lady is French, and for some reason Simpsons Wiki calls her Fraumaker. I thought this was a reference to the fact that the German scientist calls her fräulien (basically a German word for an unmarried woman), so I went to see if fraumaker was a similar German word and...nope. Googling "fraumaker" brings me back to this ch...

We're stumbling our way out of this episode with another theme week, as we cover the three scientists that Dr Marvin Monroe has teamed up with to determine Homer's species.

They are very specifically designed, with distinct appearances. Their foreign accents imply this scientific investigation has been a worldwide media event, making Homer Simpson one of the most famous people in the world aft...

Although she has no lines, this is the lady that finally fells Homer in the chaos. The man from Monday's entry appears to call her by name, although I have listened to the clip roughly 1000 times and I cannot clearly tell what it is. Frinkiac seems to think it is Johnson, but to my ear it doesn't sound like that.

As discussed on Monday, this is the other fellow with the net attempting to capture Homer. As far as I can tell, he is a one-timer. Perhaps by the end of the season we should take a moment to celebrate the true one-timers, the characters who appear for less than few seconds in the longest running animated sitcom.

This gets a little complicated.
So, when Homer is captured by a group of hunters, there are two characters who speak, one voiced by Azaria, one by Shearer. They are both visible in this shot:

After this moment, both are given lines - Azaria is the guy on the right, Shearer is hatless, repeat, hatless.
Shearer's character is shown saying "He's getting away!" before Azaria's characte...

We have about three minutes left of this episode, and somehow about a third of the characters left from it still to come. This kid is the beginning of the end, in which Homer is captured and mistaken for a mythological beast.

This brave soul shooed some bears away from the filming site.

It's not covered in the episode, but he was later mauled.
Some of you may be thinking "Hey Coop, you handsome devil, you left out that reporter guy."

To which I respond: you FOOL, you IMBECILE. Don't you recognise Phil?

Bigfoot isn't even a character, not yet (I assume he's in, like a season 19 Treehouse of Horror or something), but I liked his design in this news report, so I figured he should have a chance to shine here:

As for Posing Man, it seemed only appropriate to include him in the same post as his beloved Bigfoot, even if it gives him more of a chance to neglect his (presumed) kids in the background ...

It has been a sparse showing of new characters for this episode, but sixteen minutes and twenty-five seconds in, this guy comes along and changes everything:

He doesn't even really "say" anything, just screams and runs from what he believes to be Bigfoot, but he is our pathway to many more colourful faces. Thank you, videographer, for saving the episode.

Hi friends!
After a couple of unusual months, we're back to a vote on what the Patron print should be this month! Adding a couple of non Simpsons designs in here in case people are interested.
If this is your first vote, it's pretty simple! Vote for the design you want as the Patreon print this month, and first/second places will get their time in the sun this month and next!

If a character is holding a baby, I tend to draw the baby too, but I would like to be perfectly clear: entry number 0129 is the WOMAN and NOT the baby. In a perfect world the baby (who, might I remind you, is not speaking) would get a separate bonus entry, but we play the cards we are dealt. Do you know how much extra time and money it would take to get that baby a separate bonus entry? I'd have to crunch the numbers with my accountant, but I can't see it costing less than £12,500. And frank...

This guy is a jerk:

He's a Hank Azaria voiced character, which is unusual for the time as Hank was not a regular cast member until season 2, but his voice is distinctive and recognisable here. We've heard him as Moe before, but I don't think of Moe as a Hank Azaria character, I think of Moe as...uh...Moe. Let's say...Moe. (He's also briefly been Wiggum by this point.)
I do tend to think ...

There is actually a LONG stretch in this episode - over 10 minutes - where no "new" speaking characters appear. Between Cowboy Bob and Character #0128 there is a lot of The Simpsons pottering about in the woods after their RV is destroyed. As a result, my mind wandered and I found other things to doodle.

The first Albert Brooks character! This feels like a milestone, although he voices characters less than you might think, and Bob is no-one's favourite (which is a shame, because the natural chemistry he has with Homer as he sells him an RV is still a delight to watch.)
Bob appears a couple of times after this episode:

We covered Todd Flanders back in October, 6 episodes ago. One thing I noted was how it's difficult to tell the two brothers apart, and sure enough, I have already written the wrong name twice and corrected myself in this opening paragraph.
Anyhoo his first appearance is small, at the very start of this episode:

And unlike everyone else this week, she actually has a line! In fact, she might be one of the characters who appears in most episodes (although not 100% of the time with her classic "shhh").

Six episodes down, and it only took us a year! An odd mish-mash of characters here, mainly brought about by the fact that we have a true b-plot here, making for two threads with different styles of character. Janey is probably the MVP here, although Jacqueline is the last "main" family member we had not yet encountered. At least, it'll be a long time before we get to Herb, or Mona, or Ling.
We're up to 125 characters total. 12.5 are from this episode. Let's never question that 0.5 and m...

This guy is SLIGHTLY more interesting than Monday's kid, in that he appears as a background character more than once. In fact, we've already seen him in "Bart The General", albeit with his hair coloured slightly differently:

By "Marge vs the Monorail", we see his is still in Lisa's thoughts, as she imagines money being put into her class:
