June Content Update: Ordering A Society - Settings and Storytelling

Over the past year or so, I've been talking a lot about how to build a society, in the pursuit of building a believable, internally consistent setting which can stand up to narrative expansion and change. Of course, I have a lot to say about it, and worldbuilding itself, while enjoyable, is also a lot of work. However, it's important not to lose sight of why all of this work is being done in the first place: unless you are in a very specific set of circumstances, you are not worldbuilding for...

Just a Quick Update

About three days ago, the primary storage HDD on my PC died. While my boot drive is still fine (and therefore, my PC is still useable), I *did* lose a all of my page and art templates for my Patreon stuff.

What this means is that it may take a bit for me to put together new templates and graphics, so this month's articles may be a bit late.

Just a heads up.

May Content Update: Ordering a Society Pt 8B

Last month, I talked about determining the basic shape of a fictional army by asking two questions: what kind of society that army is recruited from, and what kind of enemies that society intends to face. This time, we're going to continue to use those two questions to build a theoretical framework for worldbuilding fictional armies at a more detailed level. This means we'll be going beyond the basics, into not just how an army is recruited and organised at the most fundamental level, but als...

April Content Update: Ordering A Society Pt 8

Picture this:

An army is lined up for battle on an open field: thousands of nearly-identical soldiers, laid out in tightly-drilled ranks in orderly battalions, underneath a cloud of fluttering banners all emblazoned with the colours and symbol of the kingdom. Their equipment marks them out as medieval - or the closest thing to it: rank upon rank of identical full plate armour, high closed helms, swords and bows and shields and halberds which all seem like they were cast from the same di...

March Content Update: Ordering A Society Pt 7

Human beings do not need to be governed in day-to-day life. Families do not need a king, a pub crawl does not need a dictator, a neighbourhood street does not need a parliament. However, this is because the individuals in these day-to-day groups are ones who are capable of interacting with every other member of their group as individuals: they know each others strengths and weaknesses, know what they are willing to do and what they aren't, and can trust them to deal with themselves and each o...

February Content Update: Ordering A Society Pt 6B

Last time, I suggested that I could go on a digression about the development of currency, and you all voted that this was a good idea, despite the fact that I am neither an economist nor an economic historian. So, before I begin, I'd like to state for the record that I'm more or less going off the top of my head here, and that I may be wrong at parts here.

With that disclaimer out of the way: let's move on the development of currency.

This last item isn't really any specific point...

January Content Update: Ordering a Society Pt 6A

People seemed to like last month's article on worldbuilding an economy, enough to vote for a continuation on that theme. So, I've gone and put together some more thoughts on the topic, which might be useful to anyone seeking to put together their own fictional economy.

Specialists Live in Cities:

Generally speaking, the more specialised a person's job, the more likely they are to live in a major population centre. Any person who doesn't devote the majority of thei...

December Update: Ordering a Society Pt 6

Last time, we talked about the spiritual backbone of a fictional society. This time, we'll be talking about building the material backbone: the economy.

Economic activity is fundamentally an answer to a very simple human problem: most people can't create everything they need out of whole cloth. Even in the earliest Hunter-Gatherer societies, humans needed other humans to watch for danger while they slept or ate. As societies continued to grow larger, the number of material goods and ser...
