Back Issue 5: Rogues and Rascals

Troublemakers, sneaks, and feral foes are among the items designed by James Haeck and others in this issue of Warlock.

As with prior back issues, this is strictly first-come, first-served, and we suspect we'll run out of these moderately quickly. They are in the Kobold Press Store now (link fixed!).

Warlock 20: Redtower

Dear patrons, this zine is our largest to date, a full 40 pages, starting with the history and lore of Redtower and the Scarlet Citadel, continuing with the full writeup of the village of Redtower and its people (plus a two-page map), and concluding with a set of monsters promised in the Kobold Press blog, including the cecum devil, jack of strings, liminal drake, and more!

Art Preview: Redtower Cover Sketch

The art for Warlock 20: Redtower is suitably epic, as you can see! The artist is Justine Jones, and the final art will be a wraparound cover shipping to print patrons in a couple weeks.

As is tradition with the round numbers, this zine will be a bit larger than usual as well, and of course the art will be fully rendered in inks. But a sketch does show you where we are headed...

Back Issue: Warlock 4 Dragon Empire

And presto! Here are the Magnificent Sultans, and the yek demons, and the islands of Marea, and much more from the Mharoti Empire.

As with prior back issues, this is strictly first-come, first-served, and we suspect we'll run out of these moderately quickly. They are in the Kobold Press store now.

Warlock 20: on the Horizon!

Whew! Thank you for your patience while the kobolds have dealt with the Tome of Beasts 2 project, some tardy art, and general pandemic-related struggles.

We know Warlock #20 is slow in arriving, but we have good news!

The zine is somewhat larger than usual, to celebrate making it to zine #20. And it is largely completed and laid out, save for a couple of final pieces of art that we expect to receive this weekend. Then to press so we can release it to you, our ...

Sales Tax for Pledges

Hi folks,

Quick public service announcement seeing which may affect some of your pledges. Due to new laws , Patreon will be required to start charging sales tax on some pledges starting July 1st.

Less than half of all patrons will be charged sales tax, and for most, the amount will be very small. For example, sales tax rates in the US will be between 20 cents and 55 cents.

Whether or not you will be charged sales tax depends on your location, and...

Back Issue: Warlock 3 Undercity

The response to the first convention booklet was good, so I dug around a bit and found the Warlock 3 zines in the box. THere's not as many, maybe we printed less, maybe it is the topic. In any event, it is the second direct offer to print patrons only

If you want one, they are purely first-come, first-served, and the link is being shared to patr...

Planar Race Poll

From Warlock Editor Scott Gable:

Earlier this week we talked about the Guide to the Planes. Now we're building on that.

Building a Planar Race

I would really like to build new races, one devoted to each of the planes. I’m not talking about “monsters” or “player races” necessarily (though there might of course be overlap). No, I’m primarily talking about sentient creatures with culture and history and motivation. Previous incarnations...

Back Issue: Warlock 2 Dread Magic

Dear Patrons,

I was digging around in the Warlock vaults over the weekend, sorting out all the convention things that we have not used since last year, and I found our box of Warlock zines. These are the extra copies that the kobolds sell at conventions. Which we are not currently attending, sadly.

And I said, well, heck, maybe it is time to put a few of these on the Kobold Store. There are bunch of Warlock 2 zines in the box, so that seems like a good one to try as a direct offer...

Warlock Guide to the Planes: This is a Ransom!

From Warlock editor Scott Gable:

“The world of Midgard is but one plane in a sprawling multiverse of planes connected by the branches of the World Tree, the flow of the Ever River, and vibrations of planar resonance. Think of the planes as spheres, each its own infinite or definite universe with interwoven connections to Midgard. Among the planes are the dominions of the gods, strange creatures, beings of power, and wonders beyond comprehension...”

Double Lair 49: Oh Ye Soldiers of Fortune

The heroes and adventurers of the Seven Cities live by the sword, bold and fearless and cunning. But in a bad year boldness comes to nothing, bravery leads to a quick oration and a hasty marker, and even Loki's cunning is outdone by treachery. Sometimes even the best of the Septime mercenaries fall on hard, hard times.

What then? Find some new recruits and spin them a tale of gold & glory, and hope they are bold, and brave, and lucky enough to win your way back out of a deep, deep h...

2021 Races Poll

Dear patrons, we've investigated the fey, dwarves, halflings, and the undead, and provided new options for these fantasy standard races.

The kobolds would like to do a Warlock zine focused on another race, but... There are many options and the editorial discussion led to knives drawn, healing required, bitter tears.

We considered using the entrails of sheep to get a proper answer, but then our kobold archmage said we have to consider what you patrons might prefer. Also, stealing...

Warlock 18: Ride Into the Blood Kingdoms!

At the border, the Blood Kingdom of Greater Morgau seems much like other lands, with its rolling woodlands, hardworking peasantry, and demanding overlords. But stay the night, and you will see a darker side, a howling wilderness where the good people depend on fire, courage, and a stout cottage door to see them through to the dawn.

Patrons, many fearsome inhabitants of this land are yours to unleash in the new zine! Print copies are underway (and may have arrived for some of you). The P...

Double Lair: Gremlins in Zobeck

We may have had one too many when we VOLUNTARILY chose to publish a Zobeck adventure about rum gremlins, but kobolds live with no regrets! And so we share our pain with you!

The Broken Handle, a tavern in Lower Zobeck, is having continual issues with rum gremlin infestations, which is causing no end of problems for the tavernkeeper. The creatures are breaking into ale barrels, stealing food, and, worst of all, causing customers to become too intoxicated to buy more drinks or food. The B...

Double Lair: Terror at the 12 Goats Tavern

We promised two Double Lairs in February, and (with a little help from the leap year) the second one is here!

When the PCs arrive at the Twelve Goats Tavern, they expect a simple night of rest and relaxation in the gnomish lands of Niemheim. Their respite is interrupted by the arrival of Malya, a woman who has escaped a kidnapping in the forest nearby. She is wounded, panicked, and under hot pursuit by infernal gnomes and their diabolical servants. The PCs must fight to defend Malya, th...

Warlock 17: Short and Nearly Invisible

1-on-1 Lair: Lost & Found for Valentine's Day

Because we love our patrons, the kobolds have asked Jonathan and Beth Ball of D&D Duet to design an adventure for two.

The result is Lost and Found, an adventure in the Dornig city of Reywald for a DM and a single PC. It begins with a confrontation in the market between an acolyte and a young man promising the PC great wealth, and runs deep into danger from there, right in the middle of a great elvish fest...

Next Zine: All About Halflings
