hello! ๐ผ
march rewards came in from the printers yesterday and they turned out rather handsomely. :D I went with a glitter finish on the sticker since I think it fits the fun and energetic vibe of the sticker perfectly. these two make such a cute pair, I'm excited to get them out to you soon!
also, I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for your support on patreon. I feel so happy getting to make art for a living and you being here helps so much in making that my reality. I'm glad you feel connected to my art in some way and I hope to keep learning and making things that can help us see and appreciate the beauty of this world. the artworks I make are love letters to life and recognition that beauty can be found in each day. so, thank you for allowing me to continue sharing that love with you all.

have recently gone back to basics and been doing a ton of drawing with pencil and paper. it's been so fun relearning tools I once used almost exclusively and experimenting with markmarking. I had forgotten how versatile pencils are and how you can use them to produce so many different types of lines, textures, and shades. I find myself so excited to just draw anything that interests me and figure out how I like to convey subjects when I don't have to take into account secondary elements like color. sketching traditionally has been a fun way to learn through observation and train my eye to better understand things like scale and space when I don't have digital tools to adjust things in post. the beauty of limitations, I am repeatedly learning, strikes once again โห๊ฉ๏ฝก

hello!
spring has fully popped up and I'm feeling so refreshed by all the new growth from plants coming back to life after winter. I wanted to make something light and airy to match the energy I've received from seeing the world fill with color again. I felt drawn to a rainbow pastel palette and let the ideas grow from there.
want to look through old postcards and stickers I designed? click here to check out the gallery of rewards from previous years (no longer available for purchase).
above: I loved the idea of depicting a sunrise in its explosive and renewed splendor through changing colors in flowing hair. one of my favorite things is watching how the sky transitions from night, to dawn, to morning, and so on. it reminds me that this world is always in motion and changing and that we are experiencing that continual cycle within ourselves as well.

and this month's sticker! the rainbow pastel palette feels so magical and playful, so I wanted to lean into that energy by drawing something that carries a sense of motion. I thought shooting stars would pair beautifully with the idea and help the artwork come to life.

been having a lot of fun putting all my various art supplies to use. I kept saving them for a time when I felt more ready, til I started having a sneaking suspicion that that moment would never come. so I opted to just jump in and enjoy the process. color pencil & marker combo is absolutely god-tier. oil pastels and paints are really fun as well, but man, the cleanup? not as fun. I've had two containers of paint water evaporating outside for days now. xD but yeah, loving traditional supplies lately and learn so much every time I use them!

felt compelled to draw Jinx and her fun hair! love that I've emotionally recovered enough from the show's ending again to draw her. ^_^ been practicing simpler lines lately as I have a tendency to overdo them, which often results in messy and hard to read drawings. boy do I love to make things flowery and complicated ๐๐๐ jinx was the perfect character to practice with since her design is so legible, which helped me better focus on conveying her personality and energy instead of getting caught up in intricate outfit details.

went out a lot the past few days and took the opportunity to dress up! that + the warmer spring weather has been inspiring me to get more creative and colorful with my outfits. I've been experimenting with layering again (a styling trick I used a lot growing up) and it's fun seeing what new combinations have sprung out of my wardrobe as a result. :D it's making me look at my clothes in a whole new way, which is really exciting! also got a haircut last week and it feels soo good not to have heavy hair weighing me down anymore. xD it's been decades since I've had my hair this short, so it was a transformative experience and I'm loving the new length. ^^

been having lotsa fun lately sketchbooking with traditional art supplies! put my recently acquired set of prismacolors to the test with some tombows and they're a dream to draw and blend with, I'm v satisfied with the purchase. =v= I just love seeing how supplies interact on the page, it scratches an itch in my monkey brain when colors overlap or textures emerge. it's honestly therapeutic and a nice way to take a break from screens when I've had too much of the computer. :-)

hello! (๏พโใฎโ)๏พ*:๏ฝฅ๏พโง
lately, I've been reflecting on my relationship with the internet and how it's evolved over time. I'm a child of the '90s and simply put, the internet was vastly different a few decades ago, an era commonly referred to as web 1.0. I have a lot of fondness for early internet and the experience of using computers. they were, and still are, portals through which I discovered new music, art, and ideas that have greatly inspired and shaped the artist I've become.
want to look through old postcards and stickers I designed? click here to check out the gallery of rewards from previous years (no longer available for purchase).
above: I don't know how to code, but if I did, I'd want my website to look a lil something like this! :D I have a soft spot for early internet aesthetics from old websites where I spent a lot of my time growing up. I find the explosive color palettes and overcrowded and interactive decorations bursting with personality and charm.

and this month's sticker! I've been playing around with graphic design more in my art lately and keep trying to push my practice in measured efforts. I often feel out of my element, because there's so much to learn and it's fun! it really is an art in and of itself!

loooved playing around with such a refreshing and nostalgic color palette! I always have so much fun exploring different aesthetics, studying their key characteristics, and finding ways to translate that into my drawings. one of my favorite past times is browsing the aesthetics wiki and learning about how imagery forms out of and is shaped by cultural ideas. how aesthetics from the past are continually reimagined in modern contexts. everything is connected!

art style. something a little spooky about that term, even seeing it sends a little shiver along my arms. it's one of those evergreen topics that is ripe for discourse in online art communities. whether it's about finding one, developing one, or choosing one, there's seemingly no shortage of opinions on the "right" steps to follow to have one. I think art style is something both innate and externally influenced that evolves with culture and changing tastes. I don't consider it something that has to be fixed and, depending on your interests, could probably benefit from regular reinterpretation.
clarification: when I say art style is something innate, I'm referring to points of taste that are relatively consistent throughout one's life. for example, I think my art will always be somewhat influenced by anime/manga, baroque and art nouveau, music from the 2000s, and bright colorful palettes due to a combination of the context in which I grew up and interests I was drawn to early on. the degree to which these things show up from drawing to drawing will vary nor do I feel beholden to include them in everything I make.
when I say art style is influenced by external factors, I'm acknowledging that none of us live in a vacuum (ur always in that damn society) and receive ideas about what is popular, important, cool, transgressive, interesting, etc. from others and the world at large.

in many ways, I think my style has emerged from my failed attempts at imitating art styles I admire. over time, this has created a frankenstein of elements from various sources of inspiration that can't help but be its own thing. there have been times these attempts were more intentional than others, but liking something and wanting to capture it in some way often forms the basis for my experimentation.
in hindsight, there are styles I've tried that I like more than others, though I don't dislike any of them since it's what felt true to me at the time. it's interesting too to see what has stuck and what hasn't, but the only way for things to stick in the first place is to try them out. I often think that a desire for finding style is linked to a fear of the unknown. I suppose for some people they can draw things in the same style forever and feel perfectly fine with doing so, which to that I say more power to you. but the discussions I see online and my own experience with anxiety around art style have to do with this fear of doing art "wrong" or a need to do it "right".
looking up "art style" on YouTube produces a list of videos concerned with "finding" your art style "fast", with as little confusion and meandering as possible. there are also videos from artists lamenting how they feel "lost" without a "consistent" style. and I'm sure you've seen a flavor of "you're copying x's style!" comments section at some point that has a similar tone to playground talk among children insisting "stop copying me!!" as a way to assert identity and originality. some kind of association between style and personality clearly exists to the point where not having style means you're unmoored and without purpose. and what could be worse than that?

Digging For Your Buried Needs, Ask Polly
the oft-repeated need to "find an art style fast" to me speaks to a larger discomfort with mistakes and failure. a fear that what we try won't produce results that are beneficial, a fear of wasting time, a fear of searching only to come up empty-handed, all of which are unsurprising in a world that celebrates productivity and control. but I prefer to think of style as something that is exploratory, that changes with you throughout life, that helps you make sense of yourself and the world. for that reason, I'm disinterested in finding and keeping an art style, hissing at anyone who comes near it, protective of something that was never mine to begin with.

whatever art style I "have" or that you may associate with me has emerged from an immense amount of experimentation spanning decades and countless sketchbook pages born out of a curiosity about something I saw or experienced. the times I've felt most insistent about style have been some of the most rigid and suffering periods of my life, sucking all the oxygen out of a room. when I allow interests to flow in and out of my life, it reinvigorates my curiosity, which is the only reason I started drawing in the first place. I try to lead with curiosity as often as possible and concern myself less with seeing life as a series of goalposts. I'll know it's time to change style when I feel that curiosity bubbling up again.
this life will change you, has changed you, and will continue to change you. if your art style is inconsistent then so be it. besides, I think it's wonderful that style is a reflection of what interests you and makes you feel alive. to feel moved by this life and each other and to show that appreciation through our creations is a form of connection, of conversation. to recognize ourselves in each other, even briefly, is beautiful. whatever style that message takes form in is allowed to and likely will change despite your best efforts.

one of my favorite ways to loosen up when I'm feeling too precious about my art is opening up a sketchbook, grabbing a small handful of supplies, and scribbling. allowing myself to be messy is fun! and helps me stay open to the process and change rather than obsessing over details. practicing in a limited space also encourages me to make decisions instead of hemming and hawing forever until the cows come home and the sun explodes simultaneously (if you've been here any amount of time I can hear you groaning "you've already said this a million times vickiiii" i know and i love u <3).
I've particularly been enjoying color pencils and sketching in pen (pilot hi-tec 05 to be exact) lately. it's really satisfying to blend with color pencils I'm kinda obsessed....in fact, I got a 72 set of prismacolors (and some other things) that I'm really excited to play with once they arrive. of course, I'll share my experimentation here as well! ^o^

continuing to push the shapes and textures I use cos I love art that is filled with exaggeration and looseness and really want to incorporate more of those elements in my drawings! whenever I'm venturing into new or unfamiliar stylistic territory, it's always helpful to practice with a fav character whose design I'm already familiar with and feel comfortable manipulating.

and this month's sticker! I loved the idea of fairies dancing joyfully amidst a rain shower and thought it'd make for a cute sticker. have been exploring more collage and graphic design elements as of late and it's been fun incorporating more of that into my art~

got the idea to make a zong after watching this video last night. was absolutely intrigued by the concept of quickly making a zine without the pressure of making it coherent or presentable. especially since I've wanted to make a zine for a long time and have been putting it off for those exact reasons.
followed this really easy tutorial to make a zine out of a sheet of paper (no tools needed besides paper and hands), gathered my color pencils and markers, some scissors and glue, and just kinda went for it. I really loved getting to explore a variety of ideas without needing to commit to any of them and allowing the fleeting nature of emotion to drive each page. I had a lot of fun making this zong and am keen to make more! I also highly recommend making one yourself if you need help jumpstarting creativity. it's a super low-stakes, accessible, and enjoyable project that doesn't take long. the satisfaction of starting and finishing something in one sitting really can't be understated, especially something that's physical you can interact with. it can drive you forward to continue making things, which is really exciting!
go forth! make a zong! โ๏ฝกห๐ชผ๐ซงห๏ฝกโ

been very drawn to graphic design as of late. approaching it in a way that makes sense to me, like I'm decorating a spread in my journal (I journal every day, it's one of my fav activities).
