Oren's Forge - PG 96
Here's the color key/quick ref I use for Oren. He's a black-tailed jack rabbit, if anyone was curious!

This was a quick sketch guide I used to help differentiate the wolves (not sure how successful I was in the early pages of the comic, though). I don't want to say one way or another if the wolves will be back, since, spoilers-- but if they were back, I'd step up their designs a little.

Blast from the past! I'm not sure if these have every actually been posted anywhere but here they are now! These are the original color reference sheets I used for the wolves-- named Alpha, Blackfoot, Cree and Delta. In the first draft from 2009, they were just A, B, C and D, and the nomenclature stuck. ;]

These are the design references I use for some of the Stone Hollow animals-- Craic (a golden mantled ground squirrel), a Uinta ground squirrel, and a western jumping mouse. The disembodied head is a Uinta chipmunk-- they've only been in two or three panels in the background so far and I haven't needed to really flesh them out (yet).

Only one page this week for narrative flow purposes-- the next few pages read better in pairs, otherwise there's some disconnect with dialogue.
I've got some more WIP and related art stuff coming through the week to make up for it, though! :]

These are thumbnails from a scrapped scene I had planned out early in the story. Originally, instead of his run-in with the wolves en route to the lake, Rask was going to have to drop into a dry river ravine and travel along it. He would find a steep log jam across a valley of bones, with a bear cave in the rocks. He's have to sneak his way past without waking the bear, though it'd all go wrong (of course), jeopardizing the spark.
I ultimately went with wolves hunting him as a cal...

Here's a non-spoilery panel from a page I'm working on today! I'm finally happy with how the color is turning out on these pages-- I struggled and waffled for a long time figuring out the pallet on previous panels/pages. It all came together finally!

Here's the full map for Oren's Forge, which was used as the end papers (the inside cover) for the printed French edition of the book. If you've brushed up on your north American animal tracks you can probably pinpoint where everyone's running around in relation to one another!

Here's an WIP .gif I made while working on a background for page 16.
Rocks are one of my favorite things to render, so I tend to over do it when I have the excuse. ;]
