Soon enough the time till our expedition needed to move out had passed. It didn't take too much time for us personally to get our affairs ready, but another day passed before things were completely ready. This was because we'd decided it'd be easiest to try and move with a merchant caravan to our area of interest. There was no hiding the fact that a group of humans was passing through elven lands, so instead we needed to rely on our cover of doing a survey, and there would b...

Touring large, old castles is always much the same. You get to see all the pretty rooms nobody uses anymore, with their fancy furniture and lovely art. As we drifted room to room I wasn't seeing much that I was interested in, that is until we came to the large banquet hall.
"Here we have the banquet hall, where his majesty held dinners for heads of state," The guide explained to the oohing and aahing crowd while I stood frozen.
"These tables are all remad...

I took a few moments to orient myself as I woke up. The room around me was empty and I was clearly alone, the vast sky outside the nearby window showing over the bay. I had been up quite late last night apparently and didn't wake up until the sun was well and crested above the nearby sea, it's bright rays bathing the room around me in golden light.
I quickly prepared as we had a number of meetings and plans to do today, mainly centering around the region we were headed off ...

We spent several hours with the emissary to the elves, a rather peppy woman by the name of Joan. Much off that pep faltered as she got the retelling of our story, how we'd encountered one of the more rare oceanic magical beasts and the loss of two thirds of our little excursion.
"My, I would expect a few lost to an intercontinental mission, but those numbers..."
"Quite severe, yes. The question is if we should continue or not." Olnir responded, all busine...

The customs boat bobbed next to us. Since our run-in with the goblin island the trip had been fairly uninteresting. The wood we needed we could now repair and get back on course. I of course spent several weeks making wind while my fellows trained the cabin boy in magic as best they could, but by and by nothing major had happened.
Now we sat off the shore waiting, waiting for all of the paperwork to be done before we could land. This had started with a few shouted conversat...

The noise that emitted from the brush around us was a wild war-scream. Birds in the nearby trees took to wing as the forest began to move. In the moment it sounded the yellow eyes that had been looking at me flashed and leapt from the brush at me.
Glen didn't specialize in speed, but he was a physical type magic user regardless, and his reaction time put my own to shame. In a flash he stood before me, the blade in his hand having swept in a glittering arc.

As the sun broke through the clouds we began the laborious process of scouting the island. It would be foolish to just land, no matter how much we wanted to, and so the first thing we needed to do was get a rough idea of what we were dealing with.
Our island, which wasn't on any of Captain Tom's charts, to nobody's surprise, wasn't actually one island. There were three separate pieces of land sticking out of the shallows, but based on what we were seeing there m...

It was a few minutes after the captain and Olnir disappeared that the latter came back, heading over to the door that led to where we girls were staying. His gait was stiff, indicating that while this wasn't something that would have him running, it was indeed some kind of important matter.
"Something wrong?" I asked right as he came up to the door.
Olnir turned and looked in my direction, "Ah, just who I was looking for. There are some logistics issues t...

After a few days the storm stopped drenching us the deck became safe to walk on again. This was both a blessing and a trial. I loved the fact that I now had so much more freedom to move about, particularly with the fresh air, however.
"Excuse me miss," the third sailor to almost run me over in the past minute said.
I'd taken up a spot as out of the way as possible, but the whole top of the ship was a hive of activity. Men were running to and fro like ants...

When I came to I felt like I'd been run over by a car. Everything hurt from my head to my toes, bruises and pain from using all of my strength in the previous fight. It took me a moment to realize that the hard heaving back and forth was the ship and not some symptom of my current state.
A quick check over confirmed that I'd been stripped of my soaking clothing and tossed here, probably by my roommates. Leah was leaning against the nearby wall, seemingly exhausted from her ...

The crew wasted no time getting to work. Every man on board ran too and fro readying harpoons, making sure the sails were in proper proportion and battening hatches. As the hive of activity roared the captain approached me where I stood near the wheel with a bit or rope.
"Pardon me miss, but you might be needing this." He wrapped it around a nearby piece of railing and then gingerly helped me tie it around my waist. "Can't have you getting swept away...

A week in and the food situation was already dire for most of my companions. Fresh food didn't keep in this world at all, even things you'd think would do well just didn't on a ship like this. Meats and many fresher plants couldn't keep past about a week and even flour, which I thought would be fine didn't. A question to my favorite cabin boy got me a graphic description of how bugs and the like would get into it, and later in the journey what we had would be what we had.

It took us a few hours for the shore to fade to little more than a line. This boat wasn't particularly fast and even with a favorable wind there was little in the way of propulsion. I could probably have helped with the wind some, but that wasn't something I could do for more than a couple hours at most and it wasn't really needed.
While we moved further and further from the shore I noticed that the movement was something else too. I'd been on a number of boats before, thou...

Our boats were bound, all at the same pier. As it stood we had the briefest of meetings with the captain of the boat our crew would be on, just enough to tell him that we'd arrived in town and would be ready to depart once we were joined by the other teams. The group that had arrived before us had delivered a similar message and so the sailors were enjoying their time off at the port.
All of the crew were men, at least as far as I could tell. While amongst the mages there was a far more...

It had been a long, and rather peaceful trip to get here. Our crew, composed of a primarily recent graduates from magical and knightly academies were some of the best and brightest of our generation, and after an extensive training process we were finally off on our first big mission.
Off across the sea and to the elven continent we would go, seeking out information about teleporters our government sorely wanted to be able to recreate. Each member of our team had skills and...

I stirred as the sun made its way upwards, shining bright light through my nearby curtains. Slipping out of bed I looked to the bright day outside and stretched, feeling the bones in my spine pop one by one. It was a truly glorious feeling and today was a good day for it.
Today was the first day of spring. As always I still wasn't sure about my exact birthday, but I was decidedly now twenty, at least for this world. Could I then consider this day my birthday? Well, not real...

The northern reaches of The Empire of Shadows
Men poured into the small facility. Days had passed as they'd pounded this hidden location with spell after spell of artillery. Once they'd finally breached the barrier they'd been met with traps and a handful of golems. That paltry resistance had only delayed them for a few moments.
The Emperor of Shadow's soldiers passed hallway after hallway, each as empty as the last as they poured deeper and deeper, ...

Jobs were... well, they were jobs. There was no getting around the fact that what I was doing wasn't particularly fun. It was informative, but not particularly fun. At the moment the biggest push on my abilities was the studying of the current information.
From what the researchers could tell Ristolian had recovered information on how to make the gates from elsewhere, some ruins on the Elven continent. Part of the team was working on figuring out exa...

I stood before my mirror in the clothes that would serve as my under layer before graduation. The black quilted cloth hugged my body tightly like a second skin, warming and comforting as I prepared for my big day.

"That's the spirit, come now, let's get you ready." As she spoke she pulled the first piece of armor off of it's...

I found myself bored as expected at one of the parties mother had suggested. It wasn't the worst thing in the world, just not really my scene. We were around half a dozen dances in and while I was participating, my heart just wasn't in it.

He was attending for similar reasons to myself, ostensibly to find a spouse. The main difference being that he seemed to be taking the whole matter more ...

The 'Help' menu flashed up before me as I brought it up. I was more than a bit pissed that this was how he had decided to do it, but whatever. I casually wrote out a small code in it, a simpler version of my lamp code, that only used a small rune as an off/on switch. The whole thing took maybe a minute to do.
When I hit go I was bombarded with the amount of messages the thing gave. First and foremost was the initial one, saying that it *should* work ...

Before I could start my fourth year there was something I had to do. I didn't want to, well, okay, I kinda did, but at this point there was no arguments to be had. It was a requirement for my continued participation in classes.
That was why I now found myself in Marcus' shop. No matter how much he complained he was still the best tailor in the city and I couldn't really go to anyone else. The man himself knew, or at least suspected why I was here and...

Alli spent several days recovering fully from her spider experience. That said we still got excellent marks on our underground activity. Our group had gone deeper and killed far more impressive monsters than any other, so there was no contest. The fact that we'd made it back just in the nick of time didn't look good, but nobody could fault us since we were technically within the time we needed to be.
After that little foray though our class got a stern lec...

The air screamed in my ears as our plummet continued for what seemed like hours. In reality it could only have been a handful of seconds, but the fear of the darkness below made my heart pound like a hammer.
I didn't see it so much as feel it when the ground rose up to meet us, hitting first the same bubble that had shielded me when I'd jumped to Alli, and then my own shield in quick succession. The sensation was jarring, but more like falling onto a trampoline ...

My little crew showed up to our event decked out. All of us had lamps, a couple of bottles for water, rope, and basic climbing gear to go along with our normal overnight load-out. Some of my companions had brought food and water, but I honestly would rather save the weight. I'd taken to wearing a variant of our armor that had legs instead of a skirt, rather frowned on normally, but if I was gong to be climbing ladders quite important.
Upon seeing us all ga...

My third year seemed to fly past me. Between all of the many things going on and the work I was doing it was summer again before I knew it.
My work on portals was progressing, but I'd run into a hitch, the cost was just too high. I'd managed to practice it until I could now reliably move an apple or something around a room a few times without passing out, but it was slow going. There had to be an answer beyond 'use more mana' because that was obviously not...

I had had less than a full month to prepare, but when the night came I was ready. The guests would be here shortly, but for the moment I needed all of my skill. For while the decorations were up, and the games were in place, now we needed to mix the drinks.
