Chapter 11

I travelled back to my core. The black gem that made up my form was “safely” tucked away at the moment I hoped. It was time to try my last skill, which I was most unsure of.

Core Refining.

It was time to find out that I had now secured my core. According to my wiki, this will allow me to improve my core and increase my CP storage and regeneration outside of expansion and levelling. Activating this skill will allow me to use my CP to enhance the quality of my core crystal, how ...

Chapter 10

“I told you it was here!”

Atania fluttered around. She was nervous and excited for two reasons. First, of course, was her recent imprisonment. The fear of being trapped in that iron cage shaped like a lantern was still fresh in her mind, but she had decided to return upon the command of the Matriarch. She fled home as soon as they had escaped and the Grove Matriarch was furious with her, but she relented as she told the story of her imprisonment and how she had escaped. The Matriarc...

Chapter 9

As soon as my CP had restored to full, I began stage 2 of my plan for my first floor. The pitfall trap at the foot of the stairs leading down was removed. I realised I didn’t need it to be there as I wanted any interlopers to go deeper into the dungeon and ignore the stairwell that I was hiding in.

I opted not to put anything into the eastern storeroom either, as this first floor was not aimed to be a death trap. From the material I had read on dungeons before I became one, it was cle...

Chapter 8

The work started with the shit. I mean literal shit, as in donkey shit. The animal had craped in several places in the first room. Hating to, I absorbed it first to get rid of it; if I could, I would be shuddering right now. As I was doing this, Larry returned to the rafters. I got a notification telling me I had now access to manure as a resource.

“What the hell am I going to do with that?”

As usual, there was no reply to my question. Moving on, absorbing the packs from the d...

Chapter 7

I had been focused on expanding my aura and getting ready to alter the basement for the last few days. Deciding to add four new rooms to the basement and fill them with the traps and monsters that would be expected. Discovering I could “see” what was within the soil when expanding into the earth around the basement walls was a surprise. I was very careful not to expand onto the surface as that would trigger the energy release that would announce my presence. This involved more aura manipu...

Chapter 6

“Fool, fool, fool!”

That’s what she called herself in her mind as she was shaking in her prison. Atania was a pixie, a child of the wild and free magic, but now a prisoner. She could see her reflection on one of the walls, which was made of glass. She was trapped in a lantern specially designed to contain the people. Standing 5 inches tall, a female humanoid figure with six crystal-like butterfly wings sprouting from the back. She was pale pink in colour and had hard-to-define fea...

Chapter 5

It takes me another 25 days to take the basement over. It mirrors the ground floor above it, with each wing having a separate basement section; there are no doors, unlike upstairs. I find nothing of interest in these halls, some barrels and crates, but nothing of great interest. Absorbing everything and choosing not to replace anything at the moment. This helps my CP restoration. The rooms are half the size of the ones above, which speeds things up a bit.

Several spiders are located dow...

Chapter 3

“What to do? What to do? Come on, Bhaldor, think!” I asked myself.

I had a major problem.

My aura reached the end of my current room to expand. I was just short of one of the walls not connected internally to the rest of the building I was in. If I crossed it and my aura left the building, it would alert everyone sensitive to my presence.

I was not ready for that. Honestly, I was afraid.

Was I a coward?

When alive as a man, the answer was yes. In many ways, I...

Chapter 2

(Chapter layout will be different on royal road and when published. Due to Pateron it is like this only here.)

So, here I am on a stone floor.

I looked up at the rafters and the hole I created when punching through the roof. But that would be inaccurate. My awareness extends to everything within a sphere-shaped area around me. Everything beyond it is faded monochrome and seems slightly distorted, worsening further away it was to the point it was a blur.

I quickly realised th...

Chapter 1

Surprisingly, death is more like life sometimes.

Boring.

I mean, it's dull.

I was thinking this as I found myself in darkness.

As far as my senses tell me, I’m looking but surrounded by darkness.

I had the unfortunate experience of dying, which was surprising at the time. Admittedly, I felt slightly unwell during the day, but I didn’t expect this. I should have paid more attention to my body’s warning signs.

It happened coming out of the shower while ...

Remembrance Day 2066 – London.

She walked with confidence along the galley. Her knee-length boots made her feet click every time they made contact with the polished floor. She was dressed in a business suit with a knee-length skirt. On her jacket, there was a line of medals.

She ignored the people standing alone or huddled in groups. All are looking at different displays before them. Behind her, a group of girls in their exclusive private school uniforms followed.

Chapter 118

The ghouls are overpowering the others. I need to take action fast.

Patel was down. The others were holding their own.

The ghoul is on top of him, tearing into his shield. This gives me an opportunity as it is entirely focused on him. Running the short distance, which was a few steps, the ghoul never saw me coming.

The impact of my axe head sent a shock up my arm from my hand. The skull collapsed, with gore and brain matter splattering about. The body fell forward, pinning P...

Entering the stadium was looking to be easy and the route was straight to the pitch.

“Contacts!” Davids yelled from behind.

“Patel, stay at the front while I see what is happening.”

“Understood.”

I was moving around the group, trying to discover what was happening. The group had turned to face whatever threat was coming from behind. I could see that a fight was happening and escalating fast.

Figures were moving quickly, bypassing Davids and Holden. Ge...

Chapter 116

It looked like six regular zombies. To stop to engage me in Patel while the rest carried on past us. I didn’t give the zombie time to attack me as I lept forward, using my shield as a battering ram with the total weight of my body behind it. I collided with a zombie and the impact sent us both staggering backwards. We recovered about the same time and attacked me again by charging wildly forward, but this time, it met my axe head swinging down and colliding with its skull. The expected gore...

Chapter 115

We were soon moving again. The fight had left us all down due to the casualties. The zone’s effect exaggerated this. Everyone has to handle this in their own way and we had all received training to help in this. But none helped when you’re experiencing it.

As we left the junction, Patel was focused on a little park area to our left because that is where many of the mutating zombies had come from. We could just make out the high-rises beyond it. Thankfully nothing else seems to be st...

Chapter 114

The first thing was checking in Hills. I found her with one of the medics next to the sealing device. She was the only injured member of the group at the moment. The faceplate was up at the moment and I raised mine as I approached.

“How are you?” I asked as I approached.

“Ok.” She said. Her face was pale and the arm was banged across her chest. She was in pain, but we could not give her powerful painkillers as they could affect her to the point that she would become a liab...

Hills was knocked to the ground as it jumped again, colliding with her. She had her shield when it hit her and was now trapped under it.

“I need support!” I yelled as I attacked.

It was some form of a mutated sabertooth tiger. I recognised it from a museum I once visited, which had a lifelike model and a skeleton next to each other. It was grey and black in some form of urban camouflage pattern and had spikes running down its back as the other cats had fought, but this one had...

Chapter 112

Staying overnight in a zone is a unique and unpleasant experience. Thankfully I had managed to avoid these missions mostly. Mission personnel spend a lot longer in the recovery phase than other field operatives.

It’s the silence. I had decided this as I was on guard duty. The night always has something going on, either human, animal or insect, but the zones are dead quiet. That, to the human subconscious, is just wrong. The rest of the team was creating the only noise.

“I hate...

Chapter 109

It’s been raining for the last eight days.

The winter in northern France was still warm and predicted to stay further into this new year. I had been stuck here since the 26th. The injury on my cheek was almost fully healed and whatever toxin was cleared from my body. I have been stuck in this base camp, unsure where I am. Sitting in a fold-out chair watching the rain under a military tent as the number of vehicles increased in and out of the camp was not my idea of a good time.

“I’ve never seen anything this bad.” Hamilton mused as he looked at the photographs of what the European operative Schmid had become.

“What is operative Harrington’s status?” Holsan enquired to the third man in the room.

“Lightly injured. He was poisoned by one of the tentacles with a poison which is a quite nasty toxin. His body has proven capable of purging it and should be fully combat-ready within a few days.” Hawk answered his superior. Holsan only nodded and ...

“FUCK!” The red flare light at this range was blinding. The flare had hit Schmid in the face plate and bounced away. Upon contact with his face plate, it had fully ignited. Schmid and I were exposed to the flare’s light at close range. I staggered back with my eyes now shut and watering from the glare. I fumbled for my sword handle as I tried to blink away the after-effects. I had thrown the flare gun away now, as it was useless.

I managed to get my hand onto the handle of the bla...

Chapter 106

It did not take long to reach the fort entrance. There was a car park in front of the fort, which we were now standing in. There are two abandoned cars here, both showing signs of mechanical issues. There was a white walkway leading up to the entrance of the fort and we would have to cross a bridge and enter a tunnel to reach the interior proper. We were both hesitant as the tunnel would give us no means of manoeuvre if attacked. The tunnel was also very long and mostly dark as there was no l...

Chapter 104

We push into the fog quickly. We still had some distance to travel until the junction and now we were out of support from across the canal. The fog would not cross the canal for some unknown reason which was a bit of a mixed blessing for us. We both knew that all the danger was now going to come from our left as the map indicated that there were quite a few open fields between us and the junction.

We quickly moved along the road, focusing most of our attention on the left. The graveyard...

Chapter 103

It was now just before 9 AM. It is a pleasant winter's day with light clouds in the sky. A lot milder than it should be. At the moment, I’m standing at the junction where the mission will start in front of the gate. Next to me is Schmid, both armed and ready to go. We await the final go signal once the follow-on team is prepared.

Giving the other operative a side-eye glance, I look over again, and my concerns from our first team meeting are still there. He is about 6 feet tall and wel...

Chapter 102

Winter was here but was far milder than usual. The days had become shorter but remained warm and the population seemed a little less depressed with their living situation. Only the climate experts were concerned with the strange weather patterns in mid-December. The last few weeks have been hectic for everyone throughout the British government and military and today marked the 20th day since the “great humanitarian” relief effort for Europe had begun. Though the press was spinning it as a...

Chapter 101

For Nathanial Hawk, a week was no longer sufficient for what he needed to do. He had been granted a week to plan out possibly one of the most daring and crazy operations of his entire life. For all intents and purposes, he was given free rein to see if an invasion of France was viable.

Of course, as soon as they heard what was being planned, the spin doctors and other political advisers immediately rebranded it. They were now calling it a “humanitarian intervention” launched by the ...

“Fortress Brittan, they are calling the nation now.”

“I heard. That’s a strange name.”

“I think they’re trying to go back to the Second World War. The nation united in front of the threat. That sort of thing.”

I was sitting with Henry in the visitor section of the building he had been moved to. The building had been repurposed to act as a “mental health recovery ward”. The sad fact was that more members of zone command were breaking from the in...

Chapter 99

When it rains, it pours. That was the old saying. Well, it turns out there was more truth than people realise. Russia collapsed a few weeks ago and now China has gone.

I was working out in my gym, watching the news feeds. Since the early 2020s, China had become increasingly dependent on Russia for its energy needs. In later years, due to trade sanctions, China had only been able to get a lot more strategic resources from Russia. So, when the zones popped up, they became totally reliant ...
