It's been a while since I blogged regularly here (or at all) so let's get things re-started with a post about my last job.

I worked for a tiny Fintech startup. I was the Principle operations engineer and we grew from about 30~ people to over 60ish by the time we sold. It was an interesting ride and I learned a lot from it.

Close-Up Paw Movements & Reverb Rambles

It took a couple tries but this ended up being a lot of fun to produce.

I was actually setting up for a totally different video. I set the camera down and found myself messing around with how the camera focuses on close-up objects. I figured if I thought it was fun to watch, maybe you would too!

A funny fact about this video - I added the reverb YOU hear in the video in production because the reverb on the Tascam was monitor-only!

Wow! Who would know guessed that a year after I posted my last post here that I would be laid off. Oh well, life goes on.

So I've started using Gitlab for project planning and it's been hilariously effective! In the past I've used Trello and Notion but for whatever reason the workflow of issues & milestones in Gitlab really click with me.

This year has been full of fun surprises!

Garrus is our new doggo. My partner arranged to adopt him as a late Christmas present! And yes, he's named after the Turian from Mass Effect 😉

A new puppy might seem like an odd gift, but my first dog, Myka, is turning 13 years old this year, and she's basically deaf and starting to go blind. It's especially sad because her body & mind are in great shape. You'd think she was 8 years old if she wasn't deaf 😞

I'm going to make this one short since I don't really have much at this point. We're hoping to get all the furniture moved tomorrow since renting moving trucks is difficult during the holidays.

I'm finally in a state of mind where I can write a little bit again. It's been a terrible few weeks but things are finally getting back on track.

I got sick with strep throat like a month ago, followed by a nasty cold virus that apparently become bronchitis and pneumonia on top of it. I went to the doctor, got x-rays, tests, and my covid booster. I never had covid at any point so that's super good!

We made an offer on a house last night and they accepted! And yes, that means we sold our current house before offering on the next house. But that's just how it be sometimes! 😅

I'm feeling a lot better mentally but I've got a super bad head-cold. In fact, this is the worst cold I've had in recent memory. Hopefully I'll be past it by Thanksgiving because I've got a new Distro Delves episode in mind.

It's Finally Happening! 😱

The contract has been signed and we're finally moving! The move-out date is December 27th so we'll be here for Christmas and spending the New Year at a new house!

Unfortunately, I'm super depressed and I don't have energy for anything besides work and life stuff. I tried doing an Egee stream last week and I'm glad people enjoyed it but I'm definitely going to avoid it until I am feeling like myself again.

I'm sorry that I've been kind of MIA for so long. 2021 has been a rough year...

I'm Moving (the update)

Last week's moving escapade ended in disaster. We took a risk by listing our house and putting an offer + contingency on another place and it did not pay off. We're still planning to move but last week's failure set us back at least a month.

In the meantime, all of my recording stuff is packed so I can't make any content at the moment. I might unpack a few things so I can make something; I can't even play my guitars right now!

I'm Moving (again)

This is just a quick post because I've been talking about it on Twitter and I think you guys deserve a little context to it.

I'm moving from Washington back to Oregon for family reasons.

Since the housing supply is extremely limited in the city we're relocating to, we have to move swiftly to make it work.

But yeah, it looks like there will be another Egee hiatus this month and probably next month too since it's going to take a while to get all of my stuff settled again.

Egee at Sevastopol Station

I've been looking forward to making this video since I got this commission!!

It's not exactly Halloween commish or video but I think people are more expecting of spooky stuff during spooky season.

Samsung 980 SSD Performance on Linux

This video was an absolute blast to edit. Less so gathering the data because I went back & forth on the format until I just settled on using Samsung's datasheet.

I'm generally really happy with this video but I think the part where I discuss the benchmark numbers could use some improvement. Not exactly sure how but I it doesn't feel like it flows with the rest of the video.

Anyway, we're only a week into September and I'm already breaking my "No videos for September" commitmen...

Partial Update

Yay it's finally happening!!

Progress on Egee actually started last year but COVID really screwed things up. Egee's maker is back at it and sent me some progress shots!

Obvs I'm suuuuuper excited about all the things I can do as Egee. Watching it all come together is super fun!

I'm tentatively planning for 2022 to officially unveil Egee. Until then, watch here for updates!

I've been having trouble lately with time & prioritizing my hobbies. As an engineer and generally data-minded person, I decided to make a database in Notion to figure out what exactly I was spending my time on.

New Episode, Same Challenges

I wasn't expecting to finish producing this episode this week but I had a burst of inspiration and I wanted to see if the final video matched the vision I had for it.

This is a "special" episode because it doesn't really follow the established format and mixes in some of the benchmarking stuff I've done. I really enjoy the benchmarking stuff but it seems really hit-or-miss on the channel.

I enjoyed making this video waay more than I was expecting. It came together very quickly too; I had a vision for the video before I even started working on it.

I did a lot of data spelunking last weekend (I plan to write a post about my findings at some point) and it apparently really inspired me to get back into the OG Egee channel.
