Arthur K. Billingsworth and the Curse of the Forbidden Books Part 2: Bornhold's Revenge

Remember this?

Maybe not, considering more than 2/3rds of our current subscribers weren't around back in January 2017. When we hit 50k subscribers we held a contest, in which we gave viewers a title (the title of this video), they would submit a synopsis, and we would pick our favorite and produce the video.

(here's the original announcement)

Then it took us over a year to finish it.

Upgrading the Videos

Hello all current patrons! This doesn't really effect you!

This is all covered in the video, but essentially we're revamping the Patreon in an effort to upgrade the videos as well as our whole operation.

So this means we're going to be offering a lot more to patrons. I'll be posting updates here a lot more often, including info on upcoming videos. We're actually going to make monthly livestreams a regular thing, ideally aiming for the first week of each month.

And anyone in the $10...

We Made a New Channel Trailer

You may have noticed some rebranding happening this week on the channel and the Patreon and my social media accounts. All of this is long overdue. The old branding was from 2015, and it was time for an update in tone, aesthetic, and also I wanted to get the whole core team on there.

Part of this rebranding means a new channel trailer (the thing that plays on the main page of the channel for new visitors). I could've thrown something together in 10 minutes, a quick montage of clips from videos ...

Patrick Explains PADDINGTON (And Why It's Great)

THEY'RE BACK

We've had this one planned since my mum and I went to see Paddington 2 together back in January (still my favorite movie of 2018, btw). At this point this series has become a genuine collaboration between my parents and me. Every time I visit we end up hanging out and brainstorming potential developments for future installments. They love making them, and I'm so happy that they've kind of developed a fanbase of their own.

And yeah, the series is now...

The Art of the PG-13 F-Bomb

I should have expected this, but YouTube rejected this video for monetization due to profanity, which is kind of unavoidable since it's an ANALYSIS of the use of profanity.

The reason I mention that is I because I want to thank you all for helping support this endeavor, since in this instance, YouTube is not.

Anyway, this is a little video about something I've always been fascinated by: how PG-13 movies utilize the one F-word they're allowed. I go deep on this. And Matt plays the synthes...

The Weird Problem With the DC Universe

This is the nerdiest thing I'll probably make all year.

For the past decade or so I've been obsessed with how pop culture and politics work within the DC Universe, and the strange inconsistencies they seem to cause. I only know one other person who has ever thought about this so I might just be a lunatic obsessing over nothing, but anyway, I decided I should finally make a video about it.

This isn't really an intelligent analysis, just a person digging way too deep into the most trivial ...

Live Stream Q&A

Apologies for the short notice.

At 7pm EST I'll be going live and answering questions about the podcast or film criticism stuff (so, the two latest videos).

Plus some general questions, too. But I want to primarily keep this on topic.

Expect a special Patron-only live stream next week

ANNOUNCING OUR PODCAST

It's here! We've been teasing this for months (and working on it since late last year) and it's finally no longer our secret.

Welcome to WE HEART HARTNETT

(here's the official description)

The internet's premiere Josh Hartnett podcast! "We Heart Hartnett" follows hosts Patrick Willems, Matt Torpey, and Jake Torpey as they explore the filmography of one of the most beloved actors of the past 20 years, movie by movie.

You might be thinking, "Josh...

We Need to Talk About Film Criticism

Look! A new video less than a week since the last one! And ALMOST on a Wednesday!

This is one I've been wanting to make for a while. Basically I HAVE A LOT OF THOUGHTS ABOUT FILM CRITICISM AND I THINK PEOPLE NEED TO HEAR THEM

Solving the Mystery of J.J. Abrams

AND WE'RE BACK

Around Christmas I was talking to a friend about JJ Abrams returning to direct Star Wars Episode IX, and how weird it was that he'd never really ended a story before. I had this crazy thought: that maybe by watching the entirety of the first TV show he ever created, Felicity, I could figure out the core idea of his work and what he might do with Episode IX.

So I did it.

This is the result.<...

What Do We Want From a Star Wars Movie?

Remember the last video, how I talked about how I was revamping the way I make video essays?

Well, here's the result. It's 20 minutes long, it took a full extra week to make, but it's a better idea of what I'm going to be doing with these videos going forward.

It's a deep dive into the evolution of Star Wars fandom over the past 40 years. It's dense. It will probably be divisive. I had a lot of fun making it.

On Making Video Essays

This was supposed to be last week's video. And it was supposed to be very different.

It was originally a fairly standard video about my process for making the nonfiction videos (like video essays). But then while finishing it, the video got me thinking about why I make video essays and my whole approach to them, and I had this realization that I realized I'd been building to for months.

Anyway, this meant I had to revamp this video because suddenly it seemed really lazy. But now...

HBO is Ruining Movies

This is the ACTUAL official video for this week.

This is about something that's been bugging me for a while, and finally I decided the best thing to do was make a video about it.

I also reshot this entire thing twice over the past month because I'm a lunatic.

FIRST DAY OF PRODUCTION (Apartment Hunting BTS Ep 2)

I meant to edit this a month ago but hey guys it's been a busy time.

Remember a while back how I said I'd be documenting the production of our short film "Apartment Hunting" in behind the scenes vlogs? Well here's the one for the first day of production!

Expect the next one in a week or so.

Also there's another video coming this week.

Also as you may have seen on Twitter or Instagram, I shot a video with my parents last night.

Expect that in a week.

It's going to be a good year.*

Merry Christmas, everyone. 2017 has been a bad year for the world, but a good year for this channel. Thanks for all the support. There's a lot of good stuff on the way.

Plus I'm shooting a new "Patrick Explains" video with my parents while I'm home for Christmas.

Avoiding THE LAST JEDI Spoilers

(NO ACTUAL SPOILERS IN THE VIDEO)

Look at that, an actual Wednesday video release.

The past 5 days have been madness. Since Friday night we've been filming every day, and both Saturday and Sunday were 12-hour days. We shot the whole Christmas video (it drops next Wednesday!), and then as soon as we wrapped on Sunday, we sat down, wrote this, and started shooting.

This is an idea I've had floating around since when The Force Awakens came out, but we didn't make it then. Now the time...

How Comic Book Storytelling is Changing Movies

Can't write much because I've gotta get back to shooting this year's Christmas video (it's gonna be great) but here's this week's video, a few days late due to me getting kinda sick and just having no energy to edit.

This is a bunch of stuff I've been thinking about for a while, how the rise of comic book movies has been introducing new models of storytelling to cinema. Lotsa talk about that. I think it's fun. Enjoy.
