THE CHRISTMYSTERY (#ChristmasVid2016)

Here it is. The annual Christmas video. Like last year, it's a short film. Unlike the past two years, we actually finished it before the 25th. Enjoy. Merry Christmas. Thanks for making videos like this possible.

We Made a Reaction Video (Sort of)

HEY PATREON PATRONS! THIS IS AN EARLY LOOK AT THE NEW VIDEO! IT WON'T BE PUBLIC UNTIL TOMORROW MORNING! WOOOOOOOO!

Anyway.

Obviously this isn't a regular reaction video. That's not the kind of thing we make.

Matt had the idea for this back in early September, and wrote a script that's pretty close to the final product. Then it took a lot of research and trial/error on my part to figure out how to make the rig work.

What's funny (to me) is that this is probably both the stupid...

A Message for America (About Blade)

Hey Patrons! Here's yet another new video!

Remember those days when we'd have mayyyybe one of these per month? Well, those days are a thing of the past! We've already got next week's video done, and we're hard at work on the videos for the rest of December. Including at least one new video essay, because those are something I obviously am going to make more of.

Anyway, this is the video I shot at YouTube NextUp. As you'll recall if you watched the video I made about that week, each of us...

My Week At YouTube NextUp

I meant to have this out last week, but Thanksgiving was super busy so here it is now. And there's still going to be a full new video on Wednesday.

Since the week at NextUp is such a crazy time, I felt I should capture it all on video so you could see what it's like. So here it is: the whole week summed up into a relatively short video.

The channels of all my NextUp buddies are in the video description. Check them out. They're great.

Why Do Marvel's Movies Look Kind of Ugly?

I'm still catching up on stuff from the past week, so you've probably seen this one already. About 400,000 people have as of this writing, which is insane.

This one is pretty self-explanatory. A few months back while starting to re-evaluate my YouTube stategy, I decided it would be fun to try a video essay (I do have a degree in Cinema Studies, after all). I've been complaining about Marvel Studios' color grading since 2012, as any of my friends can tell you, so this seemed like an obvious top...

YouTube NextUp

I should've made this post a week ago, but as I'll explain in a moment, it's been a crazy, crazy week.

If you've already seen the video above, you know what this is about. If not, go watch it now. Then come back.

Back? Okay, cool.

So last week was NextUp. It was amazing. I shot a lot of footage of the whole thing and am going to attempt to edit it into some kind of recap vlog/doc thing within the next couple days so you can get a look at what this was like.

I'm still amazed I...

Stan Lee: The Gritty 1970s Action Movie

This post is a bit late, so you've prooooobably already seen the video by now. But here it is anyway!

This is the first video of the new weekly video initiative. It was supposed to drop last Wednesday, but since we shot part of it at the New York YouTube Space, it had to go through a lengthy approval process with YouTube before we were allowed to release it, so it ended up coming out on Thursday.

Btw, the scenes shot at the YouTube Space are the opening and closing sections with me at th...

LOOSE ENDS, BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS, + AN AUDIENCE SURVEY

Hi! We've been gone for a while. But we're back, and this time we're not going anywhere.

Above you'll see a video that announces some stuff, plugs some other stuff, but most importantly reveals that starting this week, we'll be releasing videos weekly. Every Wednesday. Yup.

The first of these now-weekly videos should drop tomorrow. We shot some of it at the YouTube Space in NYC, so we can't release it until they approve it. Fingers crossed they do that, like, today.

Also in the vid...

What if Zack Snyder Adapted Classic Works of Literature

Alright, here it is. The biggest video of the year thus far. We've been shooting this since June, and it's been in the works since March. As I mention at the end of the video, there was an interview with Snyder in which he mentioned his interest in making an adaptation of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead (an idea that is both insane and wonderful). This got me thinking about him turning his attention away from comic books and toward famous novels, so I tweeted about it:

Freedom (the Beyoncé video)

This post is a couple days late so there's a good chance you've already seen the video, but now you get something to read about it!

You might have noticed that the video is on Vimeo instead of YouTube. And if you guessed it's because of the music, you are 100% right. The video prominently features "Freedom," arguably the best track on Beyoncé's new album, Lemonade, and apparently her record label has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to anything from the album being put on YouTube ...

Black Mirror: Pokémon Go

By now you've probably seen this, since it's been out for two days. Sorry about the lateness of this post; I published the video right before boarding a plane on my way home from Comic Con, and now that I'm back in the real world I've been catching up on life/work/sleep.

This video was actually supposed to drop a week ago. We rushed it from idea to finished product in seven days so it would be out before San Diego Comic Con started. The day before Comic Con, right as I finished editing, it occ...

The Election of 2016

We made a topical video about politics! Wait, don't freak out, it's still goofy and weird and actually barely about politics at all.

This was written about three months ago, back when there were a lot more candidates left in the presidential race, but I think it's still equally relevant now (except for the line where I say there are five months until the election, since we shot that in June).

Paul Steadham, our genius prop master, built the awesome cryogenic freezing pod featured...

The High School Reunion

Here it is: the giant video I mentioned last time. I think this actually might be the longest video we've ever made.

Anyway,  as you probably figured out, this is about my high school reunion. Which technically happened a week ago (it was less awkward than I expected). When we got the invitations a few months ago, I felt really weird and anxious about it, so, naturally, I figured I should make a video about it. And because I like making things hard for myself, I figured it shoul...

So What Are We Up To?

Hello patrons! I wanted to drop you guys a line because it's been a while since we released a video (April 27th, to be exact), and it would be understandable if you were thinking, "Hey, are these guys doing anything at all with the funding we're giving them?"

The answer to that is a very big yes. We are doing a lot of things. We've been working relentlessly for the past couple months and currently have 3 videos in various stages of completion:

-1 massive (at least 10 minutes long...

NEW VIDEO - Live-Tweeting

Alright, we're back! This should've been done a couple weeks ago, but finding a control room to shoot in proved tougher than expected. In the end, all the potential ones fell through and I just faked it in an apartment. Considering that, I think it looks pretty decent.

As you can probably tell, I don't love it when people live-tweet movies they're watching for the first time. I know, how shocking that I have strong opinions about the right way to watch movies. So I felt that the best way t...

A Video About Batman and Superman and Cereal

We're working on a bunch of new stuff right now, but I had to take a break to make this. As you might have heard, I saw Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and didn't love it. So I made a video about it involving a lot of food.

Some mild spoilers within.

This week's video is out!

This is based on a script Mike wrote a year ago. It was originally way longer until Jake, Matt, and I hacked apart and crammed in a lot of Smash Mouth references. Trust me, if you like Smash Mouth, you're gonna love this.

I've attached the shooting script for the video, in case you're the kind of person who wants to see how such a complex piece of art came into being.

HEY A NEW VIDEO FINALLY

That huge 6-or-so-week gap between videos is thankfully over. Some explanation: we actually shot this new one back on January 2nd, but then immediately after that the New York State Bar Association hired me to make a video that ended up taking over my entire month.

(you can see that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQgIQvHQv7g&feature=youtu.be, they actually gave me a lot...

The 2015 Christmas Video

Merry Christmas everyone! (it's technically the 2nd day of Christmas so this still counts)

As you probably know, each year we make a totally bonkers Christmas video. This year we decided to change things up a bit. Instead of a 3-minute video we made a full-on 10-minute short film. It's still super weird, but there's actually a story this time. And, if I may say so myself, a pretty kick-ass soundtrack.

Hope you enjoy! And as always, thanks for making this possible!

Scripts for the New Videos

Here are the scripts for "Noah Baumbach's Spider-Man" and "Ken Burns' Marvel Civil War," in case you want to see how these started out. The Spider-Man one actually has a bunch of dialogue that got cut from the video, mostly for pacing reasons.
