Ghazghkull Update!

Greetings, Chromatic Warriors! I've been working on Ghazghkull behind the scenes and made a change to his color scheme that I wanted to share.

When I talk about composition I always mention the balancing of light and dark colors, then pairing that with the use cold and warm tones. The idea here is that Ghazghkull, being a dark object, that a light color would make a good base for him and really punch up his presence. But after looking at it with the basecoat of warm gray I thought it l...

Freehand: Celestant Cloak

Happy Friday! In this video I'm sharing a fun approach to painting a cloak but mainly, freehanding filigree and making sure those fine lines conform to the shadows of the surface they're attached to. Enjoy!

Edit: This was scheduled for Friday Nov 27th but didn't publish for some reason. Sorry for the flub up!

Finished! The Stardrake

This project has been done for a little while but I haven't had the gumption for that final step, photography. These larger model require me to get creative with the set up. But since I had my stage cobbled together for the Necromancer Dragon, I took the time to capture a dragon of a different variety. This weeks video will also feature the Lord Celestant and his splendid cloak. Enjoy!

Necromantic Flesh of the Dragon

Now that is a fun title to write. In this video I'm breaking down the approach I took to the Necromancer Dragon from Creature Caster, set to be released on black Friday. I had to get this done quickly and that meant spending hours and hours of painting over the last 10 days. It felt like I was burning the fuse at both ends, either I stay up late painting or wake up early to paint. But I do maintain that this was very enjoyable, it feels like an accomplishment and the model is damn cool. I als...

Lord of Blights: Banner Builder!

Sure we've learned how to freehand, but how do I force these designs onto each model I paint from this point forward? The answer, a back banner. Tactical ease be damned, this flag makes a statement that more than makes up for it's lack of close combat mobility.

There are many ways to create banners and this is one of them. I think it's very simple because there isn't much putty work involved, just plasticard which was very easy to work with. Enjoy!

CHAINBREAKER 2020

Greetings! I am happy to formally announce our first painting competition, the CHAINBREAKER. Before we get to the rules, I want to address some things about the spirit of this event. Notice I'm immediately distancing myself from the word competition, heh. I hope for this to be a healthy contest. Let's not forget the rule of cool is that fun is number one, so let's be cool and have fun.

The contest will change as we go, it's the first draft and I'm thankful to Greg (Turkeygerky) as well...

Conan Update!

Man, what a week..I started recording footage of the process on Ghazghkulls base, then this base, and then decided neither were interesting enough.

There are much more fascinating topics than a piece of wood that will come from the Conan project, and in order to keep it moving at an enjoyable pace, I think a simple group of photos can cover it

Keeping it lush and with an aura of creeping death. I laid out a variety of green tones and got to the wetblending, allowing the natu...

Intro To Weblending, Remaster!

This weeks ceremony comes a bit early! I've been wanting to make a new lesson on wetblending for some time, it also appears my older video on this topic isn't working. I'm not sure what the malfunction is, technology is a danger cat. I'll chalk that up to some mistake on my end as it was made in the primordial days on this Patreon.

Please enjoy this new and improved look at the cornerstone of how I paint.

Feel free to ask questions and concerns in the comments below. Be good to ...

Ghazghkkull Masterclass Part 4: The Bonez

He's baack, ol Ghazzy is coming along. This time around I'm talking about the tusks and ornamental skulls. The tone of bone is not to be taken lightly, we must inject contrast. This also brings the project close to the end. I'm going to make one more video when I paint the base and finally attach this glorious beast to the ground.

 Happy Orktober! :D

WIP Lord of Blights

This model was started during the last lesson I had with Muscle Warrior Ville. We had a great time planning the project out, choosing our colors and discussing the theory involved.

Personally I always enjoy seeing conversions and bases in the bare material form. Contained on this base is a snail shell, jewelry chain, coffee stirring sticks, a sculpted spiral horn, and some pieces of plaster all laid under some natural Wisconsin dirt, laid in like so much frosting. I combined these...

Complete Process: Myrmidon Shield

Shield of Ugliness part two, the complete process..Or part one if you watch it first. I captured the complete process and have arranged it in beautiful time lapse vision set to the finest stock music Adobe can provide. I really need to find some better music. Enjoy!

Freehand: Shield of Ugliness!

This world has a lot to throw at you, not all of it is bad, but not all of it is good either and in those times we must defend ourselves with a shield of ugliness..I made that up after painting this. But I hope you enjoy this tutorial on the Ogroid Myrmidon's shield!

This is part one of a double feature this weekend. I've also posted a second video compiling the complete process. Watch them in any order you please but I would suggest starting here.

Cheers!

WIP Blightbringer

Last week I shared a picture of some controlled chaos. I have a miniature mountain of models to get through, some are commissions, some are personal, and some are projects you'd recognize from recent tutorials. This weekend was spent climbing that mountain and gaining some momentum on the desk.

The first project I pulled from the corpus mass is a commission for your friend and mine, Impending Duff. Enter the Blightbringer. When Duff asked me to paint this I remembered I had the fi...

Finished! Necron Void Dragon

Commit to the void! Here's my take on the Necron Void Dragon. It was a fun model to work with, part 40k, part greek god, and very alien in it's aesthetic. I went traditional when it came to the color choices, I'm always wanting to deviate from the norm but in this case, I really like the green and black combination, even if it does look like the chaos god of monster energy.

This was that secret project I had mentioned in a blog post earlier. I received the model ahead of release from GW...

Self Critique

Chromatic warriors, assemble! Let's take a little break from Ghazzy. In this video I pulled an older paintwork out of the cabinet and gave it a bit of a facelift. People ask me for feedback on their models quite often so I had the ide to apply some of that advice to my own work and share some thoughts. I'm very proud of this video as my editing skills and such are improving. I hope you all enjoy it! Please let me know any thoughts in the comments below. Remain UNCHAINED!

Constant Hammertime

The sea of projects gets thick and thin me hearties, today I find it to be quite thick. Models for students lessons, commission work (Why do I keep doing these?), my own crazy plans. It all piles up, but in a very fun way. Like a birthday cake. I enjoy the chaos and there always comes a time when it is all done. At times I notice just how many projects are going at one time and want to capture the moment when the dam was a max capacity haha.

ThunderJam 2020!

Greetings, hails, and cheers, chromatic warriors of the unchained realm! That's fun to say. Today I have a bonus offering for your viewing pleasure and possibly your heart. Last month, I travelled to Scott the Miniac's house for a paint jam weekend with some friends. I captured some sick B-roll footage and had some words with the guys about their parts of this project. I hope this finds you well on this Monday morning and sparks some motivation on the tip of your brush. Enjoy!

Ghazghkull Masterclass Part 3: Metal, Rust, Highlights

Hails and cheers, Chromatic Warriors!

In this installment some real progress is being made. The metals are rendered, rust is laid across the armor and final highlights are applied. Happy Orktober!

Things have been a little quiet here this week, it's because I've been painting a secret project that I can reveal until a certain company lets me. So many long nights of overtime were happening. But I did manage to edit together the footage I shot a while back at Miniac's house. W...

Ghazghkull Masterclass Part 2: The Armor

This time around I'm sharing the approach I took to creating the rough and tumble armor befitting of an Ork. I'll be adding rust to it in the future but am saving that until after the metals have been worked up. Happy Orktober!

WIP Ogroid Myrmidon

Remember this ol chap? He was featured in an earlier video on base building. Well, he's almost alive now and ready to roll sixes. I painted him up during some private lessons with muscle warrior Caleb. Hails brother!

But we left a few things out to better spend our time. The metals need a highlight, we finished the blade off, lesson learned. That still leaves the spikes on his bondage harness. I could also see another round of highlights and a little freehand embellishment on his loincl...

Conan Masterclass Part One: Tanned Flesh

I need a skintone that says both cimmerian barbarian, and rumble in the jungle at the same time. Fleshtones are something I get asked about a lot and this video is the first step to understanding how I create skintones. There are so many on the market but you really only need 2 or 3 to work from. I hope it shines a light on creating skintones as well as understanding a more advanced approach to painting. Please let me know your thoughts and any questions in the comment section. I believe in y...

A Loss And A Win

Some of you may know I've been building a Stormcast Eternals army over the last couple of years. I'll be sure to post pictures when the final piece of the puzzle is complete, the mighty Stardrake. This model is the reward I saved for the end, the centerpiece of my army, the godbeast unchained, the dessert that was larger than all preceding courses. As I've been painting that final piece I ran into a little problem using water effects and wanted to share what happened and how I corrected it. View Post

Motivation: Build A Castle

It's harvest time and as we've been learning and experimenting, it's time to look back at that time. Ask yourself a few questions and plan for the future based on the present summation. I hope this helps to kick off your Monday and get the week going on a positive note, cheers!

Ghazghkull Masterclass: Part One, The Face of War

Warning, I start the video by screaming like an ork. But sometimes a little vocal freedom can brighten your day. I'm very excited to start this project as orks were the first army I collected when I was getting into miniatures. I never could afford that Ghazghkull model from second edition, being like 8 years old, you don't have a lot of liquid assets. So now I'm a grown ork and I can finally paint the iconic warboss in his most recent incarnation.

Ghazghkull in Progress!

Ever since I was a wee lad I liked orks and the baddest of them all was Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka. There's just something cool about their ramshackle appearance and barbarians at the gate kind of feeling. He will be featured in tomorrow's video as I'm starting a few different masterclass series side by side. Next week's topic will be Conan's skin tone.

Okay, I'm getting ahead of myself. While I was watching Warhammer Weekly last night I started building a base for the big ...

Conan and Jodi

The title of these models on the box is Dethax and Elmira but let's be honest, it's Conan. Going on that I've also chosen a name for the princess. Call them what you like, just don't call them late for dinner.

This model offers some fun opportunities for upcoming videos, mainly on a couple skin tones but also a few other fun topics. So let's build up the base! To start I laid out some options, I scoured my supplies, pulled some roots out of the field and got to work!

Painted Backdrop: Madax Edition

I've been eager to make a video on this topic for some time now. It's a tricky one, much more of a Bob Ross style presentation. Using the same techniques we use on miniature to set a deeper scene. I've always enjoyed combining the 3D and 2D art forms to create one superpiece. It is one more tool on our weapon rack. I hope you enjoy this video, it's more of a sit back and absorb approach. Please let me know what you think in the comments.

This also completes this Model and brings the exc...

Advanced NMM: Environmental Reflection

It's time we started covering some advanced material. I see the amount of beginner videos I've made and feel the urge to balance the scales. Much like an evenly loaded barbell, we are here for a balanced education. Metallic objects often take on the colors of their environment as they are much more reflective than an absorbent object. In this video I'm playing on this concept and it's a lot of fun. Enjoy!

The next time I shoot a video on this model, it will be on the creation on a pain...

Motivation: Fighting Apathy

Recently, Heath from Hobbytime In The Murder Basement got in touch with me and asked if I would take part in a mental health PSA geared towards the mini community. Given our current situation I agreed, I would most likely agree at any point in time. But now is better than ever. This video is what I sent to him, I'm not sure how it will be edited or added to the other material he's collecting. I'm looking forward to the end result but for now, why not share it with my fellow inhabitants of the...
