Christmas special - Tally Ho present-day tour / updates!

In this holiday special we tour the boat and catch up with all the projects that are currently ongoing or finished but haven’t been in a video yet! They include winch bases, electrical panels, cabinets, a very versatile ladder, and even some Christmas lights.

Ho ho ho

'tis the season! These traditional paraffin Christmas lights are one of the only things left from the original Tally Ho!

Just kidding. Happy solstice everyone.

174. Was this compass a huge mistake?

In this episode we install a lot of deck hardware, including the steering compass and gammon iron, we see an impressive electrical panel coming together, and we build a shed over the deck. But did we mount the compass in the wrong place?!

I bought this boat for $1!

Please let me know what you think of this extra-short video format?!

We're thinking of trying to do some regular short videos like this in between the normal longer videos! Some could be recapping old videos, and some could be behind-the-scenes recent footage. This one is just a quick highlights reel of the first part of the project. I'd love to get some feedback.

Patrons won't be charged for these short videos.

We decided to turn Tally Ho into a house-boat!

Just kidding - we are just building a winter cover over the deck. There can be long periods of continuous rain in the Pacific NW, and we still have a lot of work to do on deck, so this will really help everyone work more efficiently and comfortably. We also only get 8 hours of sunlight during mid-winter, so the tent will allow us to light the deck more conveniently.

The only question is - can we just leave it up when we go sailing?!

172. Sad news

In this episode I have some very sad news to share. Later on, we get stuck into some interesting and complex woodwork.

Fife Rail

The previous video featured the construction and installation of the FIFE RAIL - but I neglected to show the photo of the original fife rail that we are replacing. In this photo of TALLY HO from the 1950s you can see the rail just aft of the mast, above the skylight hatch. You can also see the gooseneck fitting that holds the boom to the mast - very similar to the new bronze hardware we replaced it with ...and on the next photo, you can see some enthusiastic crew!

Frost on deck... do you think we need a cover to work efficiently this winter?

172. Tally Ho gets an absurdly long Boom.

In this episode we hang Tally Ho’s boom on the mast - but before that, we see Zeal construct the solid Teak and Purpleheart Fife rail, and Nic works on some cherry cabinetry for the chart table area. The Duchess of Desire has a shocking encounter with mortality.

Bird's eye view

Tally Ho's deck, seen from above. You can see the boom next to the boat on starboard side. You can also see the tops of the spreaders and the temporary "spreader lifts" that they hang from. The hardware at the ends of the spreaders is currently not utilised, but eventually it will hold the topmast shrouds, which will be put in place when we raise the topmast itself.

Boom!

The boom is here! It's very long - it will overhang Tally Ho's transom by several feet.  It's also beautifully made and fitted with some hefty bronze hardware from Port Townsend Foundry. You'll see it attached to Tally Ho's mast very soon!

Compass!

Patrick is getting the steering compass installed! An extremely important piece of navigational equipment, the compass needs to be mounted somewhere  prominent and visible from the steering position. This is a new classic compass from Ritchie Navigation, and it will be enclosed and protected by a brass hood, seen at the left of this picture. The compass mounts through a hole in the deck and contains a dim red light for night-use.

171. Tally Ho has a rig!

In this episode we finally step Tally Ho’s mast! But first, there’s a lot of work that needs to be done on the spreaders, attaching them to the mast and making brackets to hold the radar, VHF, lights, and more.

Dovetails!

Some beautiful dovetail joints courtesy of Nic - this is one corner of Tally Ho's chart table, in cherry. Hopefully there will be many a paper chart laid out on this table, and many a course plotted with pencil and dividers.

...behind the lens!

Here I am caught on camera by @ptmaritime whilst filming Tally Ho moving out of the shed a couple of weeks ago!

Documenting this project since the start has added an unimaginable amount of time and workload, but it's literally the only thing making it all possible. Apart from the small amount of savings I started with, and a few bits of work I did for other people in the first couple of years, the videos I've made have (directly or indirectly) completely funded Tally Ho's rebuild from t...

Electrickery!

Joe has been doing some incredible work wiring up the breakers and bus-bars behind the switch-panel. When the front-panel is installed, this area will be the main control and navigation centre on board the vessel. From here all the AC and DC circuits will be controlled and the voltages, alarms, and tank levels will be monitored. There will also be some MFD displays to display navigational data and controls for the bilge pumps and heater-system, as well as our VHF radio. Of course the front-pa...

Impromptu team photo!

It's a couple of weeks old now but I really wanted to share this great team photo taken by PT Maritime on the day Tally Ho moved. There are so many missing - Joe, Bailey, Pat, Raquel, Clifton, and of course the riggers, sparbuilders, metalworkers, many other tradespeople, and everyone who has previously worked or volunteered or contributed to Tally Ho. This project purports to be about a boat but I think it's really about people - so many wonderful personalities, such great teams that have gr...

EP167. We are moving out.

In this bonus episode we prepare to move Tally Ho out of the big shed-hanger. That involves a lot of work on the cockpit, fitting the diesel fills, constructing the stem band, fitting the mainsheet gybe buffer, and of course many silly crew antics! Plus a special appearance from Pancho.

TALLY HO ON THE MOVE!

The videos are just a little behind, but Monday was a big day for us - Tally Ho was moved out of the shed and into the open yard where we will be stepping the mast in the next few weeks. It feels crazy to see the boat airborne after all this time in the shed!

Big thanks to the amazing team here and to everyone who has supported this project so far.

166. These Teak steps hide some sensitive technology.

In this episode I finally get around to finishing the Teak companionway ladder that is the main entrance to the boat. Underneath it is a critical electrical distribution locker that contains a lot of technology that mustn’t get wet, so I have to design and make some watertight locker-lids!

Meanwhile, Bob does some beautiful work fabricating some custom bronze vents for the lazaretto and installing an elegant fairlead through the bulwarks. Oh - and the Duchess has a baby!

Kevel cleat!

Installing a midships kevel cleat which incorporates a fairlead through the bulwarks (sometimes called a Panama Cleat or a Hawse). This will be used primarily for mooring lines, although it may occasionally see a heads'l sheet as well!

The kevel cleat itself is Iroko, the backing block is painted oak, the staunchions are varnished oak, and the bulwarks are wana. The bronze hardware is yet to come!

Engine room...

The Engine room - still some work to do in here, but everything is looking very tidy and ship-shape! I'm very pleased with the access available to all the equipment. Any suggestions for making this a more ergonomic and comfortable space to work in whilst at sea?

165. Finishing the Rudder and Skylight Hatch (& open house)

In this episode Zeal finishes the main rudder, hot-riveting the pintles in place and mounting the trim-tab on bronze gudgeons. We also prepare for out “open house” event, which involves mounting the nearly-finished skylight hatch on deck and showing off the bronze winches.

OPEN HOUSE 2023

Thanks to everyone who came to the Open House yesterday! It was really great to meet so many lovely people and to welcome them into the workshop and on to the boat. Hearing peoples' stories and experiences related to the project and the videos was really special.

Overall, it was a great success - we estimate that we had around 2,500 people come through the workshop and walked on the deck! Of course I wasn't able to meet every single person, and I was running around like a headless chick...
