What's the big story? We had reported in October that a key contact in the Donbas had been missing since May 17, and we feared the worst. Seven months after they went missing, we learned they were able to cross into free Ukraine and are safe. There are some details in the report and I will add, she look...

The Russian Ministry of Defense successfully executed a special sleep deprivation operation on the west coast of the United States, as the OSINT community stayed up until 04:30 local time, waiting for a speech from Russian President Vladimir Putin that never happened.
Well played, Russia.
Well played.

There is a lot of confusion coming out of Kyiv after a series of explosions were reported around 6 AM. Ukrainian officials initially stated that the blasts were not related to "military activity," then stated that "critical infrastructure" was on fire, which caused the explosions.
Mayor Wladimir Klychko said that the blasts were related to a Russian strike but did not clarify if it was sabotage, drone, bomb, or missile, and added that an air raid alert was only in effect for the Kyiv ob...

It has been over two weeks since the last large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. While the power grid operates at 50% of its prewar capacity, it still operates along with trains, critical infrastructure, and factories. After three months of attacks that cost the Russian Ministry of Defense billions of dollars, there is very little to show for it. Although life isn't easy, Ukrainians are not freezing to death in their homes.

Credit goes to Malcontent, subscriber, and photographer Óskar Hallgrímsson who shared with us on January 7 that at least one British national had gone missing near Bakhmut, and there was likely a second person. The timing lined up during breakfast while on vacation and a short period of having a stable Internet connection. I wrote a brief tweet stating there was a preliminary report of one British national captured by Private Military Company Wagner Group. Given the team was on break and "t...

It appears this is a done deal. During a visit to Lviv, Ukraine, Polish president Andrzej Duda announced that Poland is sending a "company" of German-built Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine. This would represent 14 tanks following NATO standards.
It is widely expected that this is the first of a series of announcements of modern Western main battle tanks that will be supplied to Ukraine by several countries. The Rheinmetall Rh-120 main gun has an effective range of 4,000 meters (or...

If the January 10 Situation Report was a full report, we would have added additional assessment that it has been too long without a large scale missile attack on Ukrainian infrastructure.
There are signs that another wave of attacks are being prepared in the next 24 to 72 hours. If another wave is launched, it will answer questions about Shahed-136 drone performance in cold weather given current conditions.

Our assessment that General of the Army Sergei Surovikin was under increasing pressure to deliver a victory on the battlefield in Ukraine was correct. Surovikin has been demoted. Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, is now responsible for the military mission in Ukraine.
Surovikin's tenure was three months, surviving longer than any of his predecessors in the role. Our subscribers and listeners shouldn't be surprised as we have maintained that Surovi...

Just a quick break from the break. Little has changed from 12-29. Weather remains unseasonably warm, which is slowing offensive operations. The truth about Marinka is out, which is to say the 1st Army Corps made no progress in December. Ukraine is inching closer to Svatove and Kreminna and little change around Bakhmut. Missile and drone attacks are now focusing on civilians over New Year's. A lot of signs Russia will start some additional mobilization in January.

Ukrainian troops are fighting within or liberated Kreminna.
FALSE. Ukrainian forces have made significant gains we already documented on December 24 and have almost certainly advanced through the forested areas northeast of Dibrova, but they are not in Kreminna. It is reported that Russian military commanders in Kreminna withdrew to Rubizhne. We cannot confirm this, but...
