It's coming in fast again - think of this as a mini Situation Report done in bullets. Moving north to south
- Ukraine has firmed up the bridgehead at Dvorichna, and working its way through Tavilzhanka
- Ukraine is preparing an advance on Lyman-Pershyi from the north, the town is the last Russian defensive point between the Dvorichna and Kupyansk bridgeheads
- The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced the liberation of Kupyansk-Vuzlovyi, which means ful...

What's the big story? Welcome to the Mutually Assured Destruction Instability Paradox. Russia went ahead and said the quiet part aloud.
The second story? Ukraine continues to make significant gains east of the Oskil River, and Lyman is officially in a technical encirclement.
The Malcontent News Russia Ukraine War Podcast for yesterday is available at:
Multiple reports that Ukraine has taken control of Zelena Dolyna and Shandryholove, and is advancing on Starky. Terrorists of the Imperial Legion defend Drobysheve, which still has two possible routes of retreat. One is to Lyman, which delays the inevitable, and the other is to Zarichne.
A withdrawal to Zarichne will close the door on Lyman, and leave the town encircled.

Special edition. Because today's podcast is a week in a review and so many things are happening, we are making this report public (which we do from time to time).
Today's report is 70 pages! Two dynamic situations are happening that have forced us to do multiple rewrites and reach the "got to hit publish" point. The first one is on the Kharkiv-Donetsk administrative border, where it appears Ukrainian is rapidly advancing north and northeast, liberating large ar...

We've been waiting for video evidence, and now we have some. The Russian Air Force had a really bad today, losing a Ka-52, Su-25, Su-30, and Su-34. The Ukrainian Air Force claims another Su-30 was shot down, but there wasn't a video of that incident. The Su-34 suffered a near hit or had a mechanical failure and was able to fly out of the combat zone with one engine flaming out. It is unlikely that airframe will be able to return to combat in the near future.
The bigger news is two of th...

What's the big story? Russia is accused of using chemical weapons in Zaporizhia. It was a small incident but a very serious allegation with significant evidence.
The second story? Russian mobilization is a diaster. Corruption, rusty and broken rifles, and no training offered.
The Malcontent News Russia Ukraine War Podcast for yesterday is available at:
There remains a lot of fog of war, and Ukraine isn't saying anything. Based on social intelligence and some very reliable reports, it appears Ukrainian forces have broken through Russian lines north of Lyman in two locations. At Korovii Iar, as we reported in the Situation Report, moving both east and south, and at Rubtsi moving north.
Ukrainian officials confirmed that Yatskivka had been liberated, but let's remember something. Ukraine said they would no longer confirm liberation until...

What's the big story? Well, it isn't fighting because there was barely any of it. The big story is a POW swap that saw the senior commanders of Azovstal and some of the most public figures returned home.

I know we have a lot of new Patreons - hello! You may have missed this if you're new here.
When Russia damaged the dam in Kryvyi Rih, we had assessed that flood waters don't care about Ukrainian pontoon bridges versus Russian pontoon bridges, and as the crest moved down the Inhulets River, this would cause equal problems for the Russians, just as Ukraine is reestablishing any lost bridges.

There are a lot of rumors, and for men of military age who are in the first wave of mobilization, not a lot of desire to go to Ukraine.
- The reports (as of this writing) that men 18 to 65 are barred from buying plane tickets to leave Russia are not true, however, the airlines are using the word "yet," when asked
- There are reports that men 18 to 65 are being denied the ability to buy train tickets to leave; this is unconfirmed
- Tickets for direct flights out of Russ...

What's the big story? Partial mobilization of up to 300,000 reserve troops and threats to use nuclear weapons.
The second story? If it wasn't for artillery, rockets, and missiles, you might think the war was in a shaky ceasefire - there was very little kinetic warfare theaterwide.

President Putin was supposed to make a speech earlier today, but it was a feint. He is supposed to make a speech at 23:00 PDT, and of course we'll listen and transcribe - assuming it happens.
The Sit Rep may get released without the speech, or, it throws a hand grenade into the entire geopolitical and mobilization section we may not publish those parts and do an update in the AM Seattle time.

Mutually Assured Destruction
Once upon a time, as the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the Western nations simmered, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom developed nuclear weapons programs while the Soviets created their own.
In a little more than a decade after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Soviets launched Sputnik, creating hysteria in the west and kicking off the space race. German engineers and scientists who had been captured at the end of World War II by bo...

Start with the bad news - Izyum mass grave
The site is located in the forests just west of the city, not a surprise. There are between 440 and 500 bodies that are currently being exhumed.
At this time, many appear to be civilians who were killed during the bombings, shelling, and missile attacks when the city was under siege in March. A group of 17 Ukrainian soldiers in a mass grave appear to have been executed from the initial investigation. There is clear evidence that some of...

Something is up. There have been almost no ground attacks by Russian troops theaterwide in the past 12 hours - including Soledar/Bakhmut. West of Donetsk, even artillery has quieted down.
This is not to say there aren't positional battles going on, recon, etc. - but it is extremely quiet, including artillery.
There remain a lot of complaints from the Russian side that the Kremlin has been too quiet and Russian leaders within Ukraine lack direction and orders. We also hear about su...

Earlier today, up to eight cruise missiles hit the hydroelectric dam in Kryvyi Rih, damaging the public water system, some electrical infrastructure, the spillway, and the dam itself.
Parts of Kryvyi Rih are flooding, and there are some evacuations. The dam holds back the water on the Inhulets River, and there is rampant speculation on what Russia is/was trying to do.
Theory one: Russia is destroying Ukrainian infrastructure in the weeks ahead of winter. That checks the box and fi...
