Penny reading poster! (part 2)
The thumbnail has been refined and a bunch of fiddly things that were bugging me have been fixed. I gave Penny and Boyfriend The Cat a shearling rug, it seemed appropriate... and I filled out the cover on the Kissy Book Penny's reading, gotta get some kissing in there.
I have a less fancy version of this chair (from ikea) and can attest, this is a fun position to sit in a wingback chair. But it's probably bad for your back

AHHH finally I can show off something I've been working on lately! Ananth and I are going to be heading to ALA in DC next month and I'm doing a small reading-themed illustration for the event — IT WAS A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO DRAW PENNY AGAIN! I missed her!!!!
I'll share the progress while I work on her; here's the refined thumbnail!

One thing I tried really hard to fit into this scene was communicating Leeds' anxiety through framing. Throughout this conversation, Leeds is rigidly surrounded/trapped by his environment, even outside the "magical" view of him. I'm not sure if EVERYONE got it, but at least one reader pointed it out and I was really pleased!

I did SO much fiddly research on small woodworking shops and tools while planning this scene; this was actually one of the first things I planned when starting out chapter 4. I have a full layout of Leeds' workshop in the back floating around somewhere, I should find it and share it! I was kinda bummed his enormous shop vac was largely covered by speech bubbles, but it's unimportant and I'm sure we'll see it again some day.

I guffawed when opening the pencils for this page, I completely forgot doing this!
I tried to get this one to work with the golden ratio, but our comic pages are actually a little too square to make it work with the REAL golden ratio. My real hope was to get the eye to naturally fall onto Percy's face, which it kind of does anyway, especially with coloring and shading.

THERE'S SO MANY 2-PAGES SPREADS IN THE LATTER HALF OF THIS CHAPTER!!!!
This one was originally done as two separate drawings in procreate that were stitched together in Photoshop once I got to the pencils stage. Which explains Percy's cool vague boot in that final breakout panel lol
This is going to be a full spread in a collection, but we broke it into 2 individual pages to post online - so I erased Percy's right foot when it was posted on johnny wander.

BABY CHIAKI!!! (well, baby percy)
I've mentioned this before, but I really enjoy having characters that are so large that they can completely frame other characters or create frames within a panel haha ... It was important to me that Chiaki was enveloped by the other character's silhouette in that first shot.

I've been trying to find more creative ways to get tall full-body "fashion" shots into pages ... but you have to be really mindful of where you do bubble placement or it'll make read order confusing!!

Basements also have really fun lines and geometry that can lead the eye or subdivide a panel! I did TOO MUCH RESEARCH on unfinished basements for this scene!!!!

GETTING BACK TO SHARING THUMBNAILS!!
I definitely overdid this one and pretty much wound up inking a slightly elaborated version of the original thumbnail haha...
I'm really pleased how the geometry and shape of this scene came out, it's really fun having a character that can completely block out or subdivide a panel or page!
