I was especially excited to do this page for the small action between panels one and two of Cecilia killing the weed with her skeleton hand. It might have been too subtle? There was a lot of text on panel 2 so the figures had to be kept pretty small haha

Lighting was really integral on this page, so it was roughed in even from the thumbnail stage. (these are the pencils, but they used the same shading layer as from the thumbnails haha)
As a visual artist I feel like I'm usually pretty good at hitting emotional cues- but for some reason it took me about 5 takes to hit Percy's expression and body language. I think I got it in the end.

I'm always loath to share my thumbnails for stuff that hasn't come out yet, but I don't think this has any really significant spoilers.... I'll share more as things are being posted!
My thumbnails these days (done in procreate on the ipad) have two stages - loose sketch (for staging) and tighter sketch (for expressions.) Then everything gets exported to my computer and pencils are refined further in photoshop.

At some point in the process, the pencils for Page 1 wound up being mirrored and never flipped back, and for the life of me I don't remember if it was intentional or accidental? I think the page still reads fine!!! 💦
