Academic ConFusion is now on audio!

The 2nd book in the Magical Fusion series, Academic ConFusion, is now available on audiobook!  Miles Meili did another fantastic job narrating this book, and I'm very excited for everyone to hear it!

The Fusionist Book 4 -- Recap

This is the recap that I'll be putting at the beginning of book 4; this isn't really anything new to you all, but I figured if I was including it, I might as well post it.  In addition, I'll be editing the book today and tomorrow, getting it to beta-readers, and scheduling its release on RR.  After that, I'm theoretically taking the rest of the week off, so there won't be any other chapters until at least Monday of next week, as I'll probably be spending Sunday planning.  View Post

The Fusionist Book 4 -- Epilogue

Epilogue

Barrisha looked out over the castle wall, despair gripping her entire being as she looked at the monsters assembling outside of Draverdin’s defenses. While the sight of monsters was a normal occurrence, especially over the last few weeks, it was the high number of monsters she saw that concerned her.

Just as it concerned everyone else along the wall.

“We’re all going to die, aren’t we?” Marfo asked from her side, his shortsword clasped tightly i...

Next project?

As I wrote in my post about my plans for next week, I'll be taking a few days off before I start my next project.  As for what that next project is, well, I wanted to see what my Patrons thought.

There are 4 options of what my next project will be, as far as I can see.  First, I can write Book 5 of The Fusionist, continuing on from the end of Book 4.  Next, I can write Time Core Book 5, which I've been waiting on for awhile so that I've got chapters built up for The Fusio...

Plans for December 10 - 15

Book 4 is almost done!  I just have the epilogue that I'll be writing on Sunday, and then I'll be spending a day or two editing and scheduling the rest of the chapters on Royal Road.  After that, I'll probably be taking some days off before I start my next project!

Here are my tentative plans for next week.

Sunday: Write epilogue for Fusionist Book 4

Monday: Editing

The Fusionist Book 4 -- Chapter 61

(This is the final chapter of book 4, though I still have an epilogue that I'll be writing on Sunday)

Chapter 61

Unfortunately, as much as Larek wanted to have some sort of control over his body, Tactician Mind apparently only gave him a miniscule amount of influence over it. As soon as Furious Rampage and Consuming Speed activated, he found himself much stronger and moving at three times the speed he normally moved as his Agility...

Chapter 60

The wind rushed by Larek as he flew backwards, his chest stinging from where the massive snake had swung its tail at him like a whip, taking advantage of the cooldown on his Automatic Ice Repulsion Field to get a hit in. After blocking the other snake’s lunging bite with an application of his Pattern shield, he hadn’t been expecting to be slammed into by a portion of yet another snake that was half the size of his own body and he was paying for it now. Hitting ...

Chapter 59

While the glow from the stones he had left behind him helped to illuminate the tunnel for a ways, a few of them extremely bright at Magnitude 10 that allowed the light to reach up to 500 feet away, as soon as the passageway he was traveling down began to curve to the right, Larek was forced to use more of the stones to light the way. He only dropped one of them before he decided to keep the rest, using it similarly to his Directional Illumination stone rods, though...

Chapter 58

As the oppressive shadows enfolded him in its embrace, Larek was left unable to see anything as he quickly left behind any source of light around him. He wasn’t sure if he should be thankful or not, but his eventual landing through the darkness was cushioned when he crushed something underneath him that yelped out in pain before it cut off abruptly. At the same time, the abrupt obstacle sent him flipping over and over, his arms and legs flailing as he quickly lost any sen...

Chapter 57

Pulling out one of his Adjustable Illumination +10 stones out of his belt pouch, Larek warned the others to close their eyes as he activated it at Magnitude 5, as even at that brightness it could be uncomfortable to look at for long – especially for those who lived underground like the Drekkin. He had no such problem, as even though it was bright, he didn’t look at it directly but instead tossed it into the yawning portal of darkness that awaited them.

The Fusionist Book 4 -- Chapter 56

Chapter 56

“They’re endless! Why are we doing this again?”

Larek looked at the shouting and complaining Drekkin group leader as he sliced through the neck of yet another Night Wolf, the familiar, black-furred monsters not looking too much different from the first time the Combat Fusionist had seen them back when he was traveling to Crystalview Academy. Even as the Wolf fell, Gharix spun and stabbed into the back of a second monster that was trying to sneak...

“…and then this tunnel leads to where it is believed this Aperture is located.”

Larek looked down at the map that Gharix had meticulously and efficiently carved into the wall of their sanctuary, seeing the route that they would have to take to get to their destination. It was approximately 10 miles of tunnels that wound back and forth through the nearby area, filled with monsters and potentially Umbral Demons, the latter of which were something that Larek would ...

Chapter 54

With so little material to work with, considering that the Drekkin didn’t wear pants, arranging the Fusions on the armor that the group reluctantly removed from their persons so that they all fit on them without overlapping was the hardest part. Thankfully, Larek was already planning on upgrading some of the boosting and defensive Fusions that he was working on getting placed on them, so in the end it just took some creative thinking to maneuver the areas of ambience to f...

Plans for December 3-8

It's getting closer to being finished!  I didn't get as much as I wanted written for The Fusionist Book 4 this week, as Galacticon last weekend wiped me out, and then events during the week seemed to want to delay me at every opportunity (from a sudden doctor appointment to our water heater deciding that it wanted to cosplay as a water fountain in the utility closet), but I got enough done that I'm not too terribly disappointed.  I was originally hoping to be done this week, but wit...

The Fusionist Book 4 -- Chapter 53

Chapter 53

After Larek disbursed his very few available stones with Illumination Fusions on them to light the cavern, the Combat Fusionist used Focused Division to create another 25 of the Basic Fusions with some chunks of the wall he carved from the wall. Despite the fact that he had killed the Umbral Demons that had attempted to take over their bodies, none of them wanted there to be any hint of darkness in the room; he couldn’t really blame them for wanting more...

Chapter 52

Attacking and killing everything in their way toward closing the Aperture was easier said than done. The first obstacle was convincing the Drekkin to go along with it, as they immediately dismissed his plan as foolish. In a way, they were correct; as they all were right now, that would likely be killed before they even got close.

“Fine. Is there somewhere we can go that is relatively safe and out of the way?” Larek asked, knowing that he – along with everyone el...

Chapter 51

Larek’s first sight of the Drekkin city the group led him to was awe-inspiring, as it was much bigger than he expected it to be. Based on what he’d seen of their height, the knowledge that they lived underground, and the fact that they had been essentially besieged by the monsters altered by the Umbral Demons, he had pictured something of a large town with small buildings, and perhaps a few thousand Drekkin spread throughout it.

In reality, as he approached the ci...

(I may end up cutting this chapter in half at some point, but for now it's a single one)

Chapter 50

Larek blocked yet another powerful Fireblast spell from one of the Drekkin using his Pattern shield, wondering how he could get out of this situation without killing these people. He was hesitant to simply eliminate them for a few reasons, one of them being the fact that he was technically invading their home and they likely saw him as an un...

Chapter 49

“Are you sure you heard something outside of the perimeter?” Pyluxa asked him softly, slipping up against him and speaking at a low enough volume that only he could hear her. Silence and near-silence was a way of life nowadays down in the Lost Caverns, as any sort of noise could draw attention to the patrolling groups that were sent out from Draverdin to ensure that nothing suddenly snuck up on their fortifications.

This particular branch of the Lost Caverns would...

Chapter 48

A few hours later, Larek paused after absolutely obliterating a veritable horde of Flojiggers. Over 500 of the 2-foot-wide abominations had attempted to ambush him from above, descending from the sand stripe at the top of the tunnel he was traveling through, but his aim and significant amount of practice lately let him pick them off in the air. It helped that their stretched skin surrounding their spherical-shaped bodies was highly flammable, and the poison...

(Only 1 chapter today, but it's a bit longer than usual :) )

Chapter 47

The feeling of being strangely energized with his newfound determination to fight against the Umbral Demons lasted until he got back to his Air Skimmer and lifted it up, before trying to figure out what to do next. It was at that point that he recalled the information that he had gained from the Demon’s mind that he was connected to, and he shuddered at the recollection of helplessnes...

A sudden pressure against mind nearly knocked him unconscious as he struggled to keep from collapsing completely onto the floor of the extremely dark tunnel. Closing his eyes and feeling everything going on inside of his body, similar to how he felt for his Mana, he sensed that the Umbral Demon was attempting to seep into every facet of his flesh, muscles, and bones. The sensation was like a cold plunge into an icy lake, as he felt his body lethargically succumb to the numb...

The only problem with what he was feeling was that it felt more like an extremely powerful Scission rather than an Aperture, because he’d never felt one like this before. Not only that, but if he had to guess at how far away it was, he would hazard to say that it was much farther away than any that he’d ever felt before. Normally, he could potentially detect them within a couple of miles at most, but this one felt as if it was somewhere between a dozen and a hundred mil...

Larek dove away another running charge by the scorpion, managing to avoid being smacked by a claw in the process, but his rolling dive was nearly interrupted when a stinger slammed down near his head during the process. The strength behind the stabbing stinger was such that it actually pierced through and cracked the nearly solid state of sand he was running around on, crumbling it into separate granules for a few seconds before it firmed up again.

The seemingly endless desert that he passed over in his Air Skimmer was starting to get to Larek. It wasn’t the monotonous sand dunes and lack of landmarks, or even the pervasive loneliness that was affecting him more than he thought it would considering that he had grown used to traveling by himself. Instead, it was the feeling that he wasn’t making any progress with his journey, despite the fact that with his current speed he’d calculated that he’d gone at least 5...
