The Fusionist Book 3 -- Chapter 47

Chapter 47

As if a weight settled upon the members of the SIC gathered amongst the grass in front of the transformed forest, none of them moved when the oppressive feeling of a presence approaching their location spread amidst them all. Even Major Kuama wasn’t immune to this pressure and was only able to move her head after a few seconds, following the source of the presence up into the air and above the trees to the north.

As for Larek and his companions, they weren’t restr...

Chapter 46

Waking up with a groan, Larek opened his eyes and was briefly surprised that he could actually see the sky above him. The last thing he remembered was being blinded by the explosion of his spell patterns, but everything after that was just gone.

What happened? Where am I? More importantly, did it work?

“Please be fine, please be fine—Larek! You’re awake!”

The sight of Nedira leaning over him brought a smile to his face, as it proved that s...

“This isn’t working!”

Larek couldn’t help but agree with Nedira. The first minute or so saw the dark glow around the sphere begin to dim more and more as their long-range attacks hit it, but they seemed to hit a wall where it wouldn’t dim any further. To the others, it appeared as though it was regenerating its glow randomly, but Larek could see exactly why it was happening.

The stream of Greater Trizards flowed toward his group as soon as they emerged...

For the first time, Larek got to see what happens when experienced members of the SIC applied his powerful Fusions in combat against deadly monsters. Granted, he’d seen what his bodyguards could do with a 100% increase to their stats, but they technically weren’t even graduates yet; they had gotten a bit of practice fighting monsters over the last week or so, but that couldn’t really compare to those with higher Skill levels, higher stats, and actual experience fighti...

Larek started to take an involuntary step back at the appearance of the SIC so close to him, but Penelope stopped him with a firm hand on his back. He understood immediately what she was doing, as they needed to present a strong front toward these people, and moving backwards as if trying to run would run counter to that impression.

At least, that was what logic was telling him, but being so close to the furious-looking SIC members nevertheless made him want to run. View Post

Chapter 42

“What did you do to my people?!” the Major managed to growl out even while pushing herself toward Larek and his group.

“They’re paralyzed,” Larek said. “Like you should be, too, but I guess you’re too strong from that.”

The woman struggled to pull herself forward after a while, using the deadly-looking spear as a means to hold herself up. “I won’t fall for these tricks, criminal!”

“Criminal? Why do you say that?” he asked, actuall...

The morning sun seemed particularly bright when they left the following morning, each of them with stuffed packs strapped to their backs and pockets bulging with supplies. Vivienne had finagled some extra food out of the Innkeeper early in the morning for their departure, since they theoretically wouldn’t be visiting another town or city anytime soon, as it turned out to be too dangerous for them right now. While Larek had been working on his Fusions the night before, eve...

“I still don’t think that was a smart idea.”

Larek nodded at Nedira’s words, before looking at the scattered accessories around his bed. In order to get all of the new Fusions done in a timely manner, his friends dumped out quite a few of the purchases that Penelope, Vivienne, and Kimble had made earlier so that he could pick through them. Most of it ended up being copper or even leather bracelets or bands, but there was enough steel accessories that he had be...

Chapter 39

Nearly tripping over her own feet, Karley rushed toward the SIC headquarters building inside of Whittleton with no thoughts to her own safety. Her hands shook as she carried the bundle of staves in her hand as she realized she could’ve dropped them if she had accidentally fallen, which was much more of a concern to her than anything else. Considering what she witnessed over the last hour, she knew she didn’t want to be on the bad side of the individual that scared her m...

“You need to leave. Tonight. Don’t tell anyone where you’re going and run as fast as you can.”

Larek immediately froze in the seat he had sat back in at the Elementalist’s approach, when she whispered her order as soon as she was close enough to not be overheard. They found us, was his first thought. How? They had only been in the town for approximately 6 hours, which couldn’t have been enough time for them to communicate with whoever was...

“No! This is the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard!”

Karley slapped her fist down on the Major’s desk, emphasizing her point. She didn’t know where this kind of asinine idea her boss had come up with had originated, but it was ignorant and short-sighted – not to mention dangerous.

“I don’t care what you think of my orders, but I will not have you blatantly flaunting your insubordination for everyone to hear. Keep your voice down, o...

“And… that should do it.” Larek stepped back and saw that all of the glass lamp chimneys had all been reinstalled into their sconces. Since the daylight had done a fairly good job of lighting up the common room of the inn, the oil flames hadn’t been burning, but the sun was already shifting enough in the sky that it was starting to become darker inside the room.

“They don’t really look any different. How do they work?” Grenda asked, coming up behind him....

The Martial trainee simply crossed her arms and looked completely unperturbed after being practically yelled at. Nedira had kept her voice down, as they didn’t need anyone listening in to their conversation, but the intent was there.

“I told you that I would handle getting us some rooms, and I did just that,” Vivienne said calmly in response. “The cost in gold, by the way, is a complete rip-off and virtually on the level of highway robbery, but I knew that wal...

Moving through the gates of the town, Larek could see that the stone façade of the walls wasn’t very thick, as it was simply reinforced with wood behind it that created a walkway where defenders could stand. At only 12 feet high, it was one of the shorter defensive barriers that he’d seen in a tow, though he had to admit that he hadn’t seen very many. Those that he had seen had been in passing as he had traveled to one Academy or another and wasn’t exactly somethin...

Evolution of a cover -- Fusionist Book 3

I just received the final cover for book 3 of my Magical Fusion series, Aetheric InFusion!  I wanted to show you the evolution of my original idea and then what my cover designer created for me :)

I also have my evolution of the second book cover so you can check that out, as well.

BTW, I have very few graphic design skills and my cover ideas are all done in Paint 3D -- so don't judge me too harshly :)

Larek wasn’t sure what game Bartholomew was playing, but a subtle wink aimed at him calmed the Fusionist down a little after he heard the Noble’s words to the strangers. As the others were playing along with the explanation of their presence, something they probably should’ve talked about before this point, he did the same – but he was still worried that the Martial trainee had revealed too much.

It wasn’t until he got close to the shield-wielding stranger i...

It took a few minutes for Karley and the rest of the group to regenerate enough of their Mana and Stama to be ready to go, or at least for most of them.

“This is going to take a bit longer than I thought,” Deivin explained, looking down at the mess that was Rhylla’s leg. “Her Body Regeneration has already stabilized her, but there’s more damage to her limb than just a broken bone.”

Karley stumbled backwards as she was pushed out of the way, the Smasher that had saved her life raising the haft of the oversized warhammer in front of him to block the strike. Even with Barlin’s prodigious strength, he was pushed back a step and his weapon looked to have been bent slightly out of shape were it had been hit – despite the Strengthen Steel +2 Fusion she had placed on it the day before. Even her best work with Fusions hadn’t been enough to make ...

Plan for Sept 17th - Sept 23rd

I have no releases this week, because the Core Domination audiobook is still under production, and Academic ConFusion comes out on October 4th.

So, for the first time in around a month, I'm planning on spending Sunday through Friday just writing!

Next Sunday, the 24th, I'll be at a craft fair with my wife, so there won't be any updates that day, but I'll be back at work on that Monday :)

Crouching down as he crept up the sparsely vegetated hill, Larek got down on his hands and knees before crawling the rest of the distance up to the apex where he could look over to what was beyond. His robe was already dirty and blood-stained from the last week of travel, though it didn’t have any tears or damage at all; unfortunately, the Multi-Resistance Cloth Fusion on it didn’t repel dirt or stains, which was something he might have address in the future wh...

For a moment, Larek thought he was wrong about the danger that was heading toward them from the fields, as a small figure appeared as it ran out of the tall stalks of grain. At approximately 2 feet tall, the front of it appeared to be humanoid in appearance, though it had a bulbous, oversized nose and severe features marked by a mouth filled with pointed, serrated teeth. Its dark brown skin was leathery in appearance, making the monster appear old and worn, which was furthe...

It turned out that Larek had killed 134 of the Dirt Golems himself – if he was correct in his assumption that he had received 2 AF per kill. It wasn’t long in the resumption of their trek through the forest that the process of purifying the Corrupted Aetheric Force had finished, giving him an extra 268 AF to add to his previous 12 he had left over from killing the Jumping Squirrels. His new total of 280 AF was enough to raise the maximum Level for some of his Mage Skill...

Larek threw himself backwards from the rumble he felt under his work boots, and he landed on his back side before he rolled back to his feet.

“I thought you said it was clear!” Penelope shouted, accusing the Ranger who looked ...

Larek ended up working straight through for the next few hours, before he nearly passed out after having yet another meal of cooked Squirrel. Thankfully, by the time he was done, he managed to finish everything he had intended to do – as well as a few things he didn’t even think of suggested by the others.

To finish off what was needed for the Mages in the group, Verne went out and gathered a few pieces of wood that he helped to shape into long, straight staves th...

It was at that point that Larek’s stomach tried to eat him from the inside-out. The smell of roasting meat overwhelmed his senses, and he looked around the small cave to see where it was coming from. It wasn’t until he looked slightly outside the stony entrance that he saw what appeared to be spits made from fallen tree branches set up over a campfire ringed by rocks.

“You sound like you have a monster in that belly of yours, Larek,” Nedira chuckled. Patting h...

Plans for Sept 10-16

Well!  I wasn't expecting The Fusionist on audiobook to pass through ACX as quickly as it did, so that delayed a bit of the writing I was expecting to do this week -- but I still got some done!  Here's my plans for the upcoming week:

Sunday: I need to create the idea for the title and cover for the third Fusionist book so my cover designer can start working on it.  In addition, I need to begin editing book 2 for final publication based on feedback from Patreon and RR, so...

Chapter 24

Larek came back to awareness abruptly, his eyes snapping open as he went from unconsciousness to absolute wakefulness in a matter of seconds. He automatically sat up and reached for the axe by his side by reflex, as the last thing he vividly remembered was being attacked by vicious, blood-thirsty Jumping Squirrels that were unhesitatingly targeting him for some reason. His fingers only met the rough, familiar cloth of his Academy robe, and he panicked for a moment before he...
