Old sketch log

Guild Wars added an option to replay some of its older content that was unavailable for 7 years, and I remembered that I actually made fanart of one of the characters at some point in the past. I went to search for it and found a bit of a hogspot of old sketches, most of which are unpublished. I had them printed out in a Sketchfiles minibook that I sold around conventions, but since that one is officially sold out for two years, I may as well post some of the more interesting pieces.

February sketches

I unfortunately didn't get to do much over February, since my day job once again reared its ugly side and had me work several allnighters and weekend shifts to fix someone else's buggery, but I got myself some human practice, too (and a few caffeine-drunken bets over very badly drawn comics).

1) The response I've had over the Shattered Legacy was... absolutely amazing. I'm not sure what else to say about it or how to react, but I did want to do a little thank you sketch for all the peop...

[Comic] Shattered Legacy

"I was there. When Kralkatorrik, the Crystal Dragon, awoke. I was in the Dragonbrand."

When I first got to Tyria over seven years ago, one of the first characters to latch onto my memory was general Almorra Soulkeeper, leader of the Vigil (technically local version of UN military). This wise old warhound has nerves of mythril and balls of brass She survived this universe's equivalent of an a-bomb and not onl...

Shattered Legacy - Advanced Unlettered Preview

Since I finished all major works on this, have a teaser for an upcoming release, have my favorite page from it. Unlettered and all.

First comic finished after a long while feels... well, it would probably feel a bit better if it was more of a passion project, but perhaps it's what I needed - a good old-fashioned "you have to" commission to get my comic groove back on.

Finishing this thing is only literally possible through my Patreon's influence, so thank you, guys <3

Sleep (+2019 roundup)

"Where's the captain?"
"After haul like that, I bet he's sleeping it off with some tavern girl."
"That... is one way to put it, sure."

I generally don't post my practice or vent art, but this being the last sketch of the year (at least last before the big thing) has kind of a nice touch to it, since it pretty much embodies 2019 for me as a whole (Freud would have a field day figuring this one out).

2019 feels like my own personal raid on the Tempest. Burnout and...

Assorted SemperFi doodles

I used to do these a lot between working the pages, and it's a habit I'd like to get back to if I knew how to turn it back on.

1.
The friendship between Ginny & Lambert has always been my favorite thing to write, because they're just that comfortable with each other.

2. Christian, the first "true" villain to appear in the story, is kind of a sore spot. He's pretty much my cat, and his balancing trait to being a pretty sneaky and physically...

Downtime WIP report - SF pile

I have a large stash of unfinished paintings, with lof of the Semper Fidelis related ones coming from the time of my overall patreon/art downtime, so I may as well play catchup a bit. Out of all of them, these are the ones I'm fond of the most and keep wanting to finish (most of them by starting over).

1. Vartan's not exactly an outspoken type, but he has a broad range of telegraphs that say a lot without saying anything. I really want to finish this one, but i...

As I mentioned in the WIP report (as well as to anyone within listening distance), latest GW patch added a surprise favorite for me, which is multiple Flame Legion characters. I didn't actually think I'd be fond of any, since they were the stock bad guy legion of the vanilla game, but this whole "You know, we lost the war 200 years ago, we're damn tired of fighting, just... stop punching us in the face and stop pa...

October '19 WIP - Metal Legion

October has been... hectic, for the lack of a better word. I have quite some catch-up to play after Kupocon, especially since I not only have to pick up my work but also the load of a colleague who decided to screw me over and just disappear/ghost me without turning his work in (isn't that always fun...). I have quite a few NDA things I'm looking forward to sharing with you guys.

Alassa did manage to drag me off to a nice little Guild Wars run though, and I dragged her to the new meta w...

[Timelapse Video] Stand By Me

Timelapsed capture (with a few minutes missing here and there due to piecing the video from various sources) of this painting from last August.

I actually didn't realize I have this on capture when I painted it, since it was mostly done in weird waves (and then one final tableflip and a few hours on a stream I honestly don't remember all that well); so I apologize for the camera being sudden...

The Covenant

"... the Feeding shall begin, and it shall not end until every last speck is devoured! So let the covenant be forged..."

I have a very special relationship with FFXV's chapter 9. (Read: I absolutely love it, as anyone passing in my ZIP code area over the past year had to have heard.) Since I only own one Final Fantasy shirt, I wanted to make myself something to wear for KupoCon.

It was originally supposed to be more of a joke shirt saying "I just finished chapter...

Back from KupoCon

With EuroFurence being now permanently out of my reach (I simply don't sell well enough) and ArenaNet skipping out on Gamescom, I only had the chance to visit a single convention this year: tenth Kupocon, Pomex, taking place in London.

I'm really a pretty terrible Final Fantasy fan. I fell in love with X two decades ago (I could only play it when the HD remaster came out more than a dozen years later), I really like the universally-hated Spirits Within movie (which I d...

[Timelapse video] Soul in the Stone

The first painting I did as an official partner to Guild Wars 2/ArenaNet, just on time for Path of Fire expac to hit.

It was interesting to work on this one - the only references we had for sand jackals back then were a few quick previews from the expansion presentation and I think 2 low-res reference pictures.

Recording for this was spaced across 3 computers, so putting it together was like having to turn over every couch pillow in your house and looking for about 14 hours worth ...

AUGUST '19 WIP: Rituals

Posting early, because the rest of my work for this month is under NDA for now and the Kodan piece will be published per ANet request around the later part of the week.

The Kodan painting is an idea that's been rattling around my skull for way over a year now. I've been yammering on about wanting playable Kodan for seven years and counting now, and since Guild Wars is now obviously heading to its northern lands, this was as good a time as any to revisit this. Kodan lore has some basic s...

Chocoballs

A few months back, Kreittis was feeling down, and being one of my closest and dearest friends, he can ask me for anything that's within my power to raise his spirits.

He asked... for birds, which is technically not within my power (what is bird anatomy), but he's worth at least the try. Took a bit emberassingly long to try it with a passable result, but he seemed happy, and that's the most important part.

Also there honestly hasn't been a magpie chocobo in the whole 30+ years of...

JULY '19 WIP: Firetwins on holiday

July found me working exclusively with my "firetwins", Kirruak & Koruscar. First one is the result of a regular Saturday stream going awry (I wasn't sure what to work on, so I picked an old sketch idea and suddenly found myself at that some 5 hours later) and plays off an old idea of the boys spending quite a lot of time lurking around Town of Nolan.

It was also nice to draw some adolescent charr again, even though I usually get annoying comments about them not looking "charr-enough...

JUNE '19 WIP: Morhault & Tom updates

June saw me a bit busy over the remains of May's deadline binge. I basically just went for Morhault's old progress shot (remember that from my very first ANet stream?) and updated it a bit, finally sitting down enough to settle for a color palette and rendering all the revenant legend summons (poor Jalis though, stuck in the corner). Also finding out the nice thick clean linework I did will get painted over basically in its entirety because what is forward planning.

Second one is (forme...

May '19 WIP: Gyrravain & Lambert's conscience

May saw me do an official ANet stream after a long while, and since it was shortly after the release of the final Living Story episode, so I went for the safe option and continued on the scaredevil & his unexpectedly branded jackal. Did some rendering on Gyrravain's face, crystals around the Jackal's head I learned to render while working on the Almorra comic & fixed the previously wooden and screwy jackal anatomy.

I also felt like doing a sketch for Mermay, because abandoning t...

Overhaul

Beware, long post, but please, bear with me, it’s somewhat useful in terms of Patreon restructuring and such.

So, I have been trying to rework my Patreon from the ground up for a better part of the past year and a half, and it feels a bit like pouring water from a sinking ship - every time I go and polish one thing, two more require an update.

And so I decided I may as well do it publicly and on the fly, so my patrons actually have something out of it. Expect to see some random ...

My art is now actually useful

So, partnership with ANet has led me to some very interesting things and opportunities this year. One of them being a chance to design a guild emblem for use in Guild Wars 2. You know. The actual videogame, MMO played by hundreds of thousands of people.

Not the first time - I actually finished 2 forum icons for the GW 2 official forums in... some month of some year (what are you, brain). But still, actual in-game use is actual in-game use.

From the options presented, I picked a su...

Tyrian Tarot - Snarl Backdraft & Galina Edgecrusher

Tyrian Tarot illustration 3/3 - 2 of Cups

We?! There’s no “we”, twiggy. I’m not interested in a waterlogged Ash deserter.

While  last to show, this is actually the first card I had (and the one I  spent an eternity bugging the moderation team about - bless their  patience, really). When I said Almorra and Kalla are not my most  favourite charr in the game, these two are actually who steal their  spotlight.

Pain Response (Storyboard)

This will be one of the few patron-exclusives, since it's a Work-in-progress of a comic I'm planning to finish.

I was supposed to do a short story comic for 2018's Winstersday Zine, but unfortunately, my schedule got borked by higher-ups at work being unreasonable, an extremely delayed project being dumped on my head at the worst opportune moment, and the plain old bad luck that, among other things, included spending half past month at the vet's office to be one of the 5 people this year in ou...

Gavin & Thea

Digging myself from an embarassingly large pile of NDAs (more on that soon), I realized I have some older stuff I'm now free to share.

These were done 2-years-ish ago as keychain designs for ČeSFuR. Aaand... I somehow ended up with a wayward story that will probably demand to get written at some point. Thankfully, my brain is busy arguing with itself whether it wants to be fantasy or historical ficti...
