Nero has been dealing with the fleeting presence of his dad with very complex mindset, and isn't sure what's the right thing to feel. In order to appear stronger, Nero denies any accusations of him missing his dad, but his friends see through the bluff. Hovus is there telling whatever he feels is valid, and that's how it is in real life too.

You know, I was very surprised people cared more about Biro than Hovus. It's entirely logical because Biro has a lot more screentime in the comic, but I guess I myself was always more attached to Hovus so I automatically thought others would be, too.
