NAME THIS PHOTO

I'm working on my website attempting to develop an easier (more enticing) system to sell prints.  Several of my photos have dumb, boring names. Let's fix that first.

This is the Katy-Wynnewood Oklahoma EF4 from May 9, 2016 tracking away to the east.  At this point it is about 1.5-2 miles away but the roar was loud as it entered thick forrest.  So perhaps something about that.

Here are some names of other prints on the site to help set the mood... "...

The "Wind Breaker's" First Chase

Between booked performances and surfing, I was able to squeeze in a storm chase yesterday in East TX.  It was pretty uneventful, but nice to get some red box time regardless.

Missed the Tornadoes embedded in the messy line as I positioned South in the warm sector. Several little cells developed some rotation before being absorbed by the line and one went tornado warned.  But again, nothing interesting happened in front of me.

FOR THOSE THAT ARE NEW HERE, we've name...

SURF IN TEXAS?

Instead of watching Hurricane Michael destroy property and people, I buried my head in the sandy green water of Galveston Texas. Almost afraid to open the news. Want to just enjoy today's memories. Last I heard Michael was a category 4.  Did not expect that!  Hoping our Floridians somehow dodged this bullet.  Will crack those details open tomorrow.

Hurricane Michael... Bad or Swell?

As Florida buckles down for Hurricane Michael, Texas surfers already have hopes through the roof for what looks like a set up for epic Texas surf (equivalent to typical California surf).

Right now Michael is sending a ground swell to the Texas coast, forecast to arrive with the roosters call tomorrow. Coincidently a front initiating storms right now in East Texas should move offshore tonight leaving light offshore winds all day tomorrow along the NE Texas coast.  Surfers know offsho...

SONG OF THE SCARY MONTH - "My Hell"

The hell is the lonely, abandoned home. The demons are the worries. The ghosts are the memories... The removed furniture imprints in the carpet, the empty cabinets , the missing picture frames.  If you haven't seen the video, be sure to check it out.

Fellow Patron Terry asked why I didn't post the new video here. So in case some of you missed it, here it is.

STORMS THIS WEEKEND

LOOKS LIKE AN ACTIVE WEEK OF STRONG STORMS and possible some tornadoes. There currently appears to be a lot of overturning and residual mess, but somebody somewhere should get some neato pictures.

My new license plates for the "Wind Breaker" never came in and my dealer plates expire today. Other good news, I lost my drivers license.  Not gonna let the little things keep me from chasing.

Those evil black demon faces are edible black water chestnuts. Got em in China...

Guess What County Has the Most Tornadoes?

Weld County Colorado had the most tornadoes reported between 1952 and 2010 at a whoppin' 252.   I've never seen a tornado there.  Guess what county came in second?  MINE!  Harris County Texas.  I've seen one wimpy tornado here.

THIS NEXT VIDEO is taking forever to complete.  Lots of graphics... I'm terrible at making graphics in a timely manner. Hope to have it completed by this weekend... But there might be some storm chasing this weekend :D

The Best Storm I Didn't See

This is the Simla Colorado Supercell and anticyclonic tornado from 6-04-15. After chasing 10 Colorado dud set-ups, I decided to choose KS the next round. Then this happened. Closest I've come to crying since Steve Irwin died.

Thanks to all you Patrons, I've licensed this amazing video clip from fellow chaser Blake Knapp with Weather Adventures.  I also licensed some video from the other Blake. Blake Brown with Extreme Tornado Tours.  With their video supplementing mine, we've ...

NEXT VIDEO - THE COLORADO CURSE

Chasing tornadoes in Colorado is weird, and I haven't exactly been lucky there.  Typically each year I'll chase 5 or 6 decent CO set-ups and then skip a mediocre day or two.  Those are the days CO goes bananas with photogenic tornadoes.

FOR MY NEXT VIDEO we're gonna dig into what makes CO hard to forecast 24-36 hours out.  The challenge for this video will be simplifying the physics without butchering them... Lee cyclogenesis, the DCVZ, uplift regime, the lower dews, the ...

The Second Season...

Ever so slight risk for severe thunderstorms Thursday & Friday.  This round isn't currently speaking to me, however I hear the whispers of the Autumn tornado season right around the corner.

The Southern Plains usually sees a fist full of tornado events from late September through November and I've got sporadic performances booked. Hopefully, the planets will align and the "second season" will surprise us.

Hurricane Florence and GOES16

GOES 16 (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) provides high spatial and temporal resolution imagery of the Earth.  GOES is one of my favorite tools for forecasting thunderstorm initiation while storm chasing.

These photographs FROM SPACE are not only helpful forecasting tools, they are beautiful.  You can also watch animations of the clouds and atmospheric conditions changing.  There might be a better app out there, but right now I'm using this one.  Pr...

Bear, Mountain Goats, and John Lithgow

The wife and I took Mom to Glacier National Park in Montana this holiday weekend.  We saw a black bear, mountain goats, big horned sheep, a garter snake, a bald eagle, incredible scenery and much, much more.  On the way back, Mom sat next to John Lithgow.  If you've ever seen "Twilight Zone the Movie" from back around 1983, you might be a little concerned.

I was just telling fellow Patron Justin McLemore about how under-rated no cell phone reception is.  Anyway, back...

PATRONS HOOKIN' ME UP!

NEW DASH CAMS: So how about this... Fellow Patron "Storm Angelus" scored me 2 constantly running dash cams for FREE. One constantly shooting 4K 30fps out the front and another shooting HD 60fps out the back.  They were both professional installed by these guys at the DashCam Store in Austin TX and all I gotta do is mention them in a video.  Thanks Crystal!

Fulgurite / Petrified Lightning

IN MY NEXT VIDEO I'm trying to track down the locations of the close lightning strikes featured in my previous video, in the off chance I'll be able to locate a fulgurite.  Fulgurites are often referred to as "petrified lightning" and occur when the extreme temperates of lightning fuse sand or soil into glassy tubes or fragments.

ALONG THE WAY we stumble across many other unexpected animals and adventures.  After trimming all the video fat, we were able to compress over an hour...

NEXT VIDEO Sneak peek

I know I've been a little quiet this month... Been on a mad-scientist editing binge.  The 2018 footage has me super inspired and I'm hoping to churn out a 3rd video this month.

THE NEXT VIDEO is going to showcase more of the crazy lightning barrage I teased in the last video.  The tree strike was the highlight, but there were many, many more incredible strikes caught on camera during this vibrant 7 hour light show.

WE'RE GOING TO TARANTINO THIS ONE.  The next...

NEW THIEF DETERRENT SYSTEM

One of the many things I love about driving a coupe is a trunk. All your tool bags, cheap gadgets and golden grahams are hidden behind sheet metal.

In an SUV you've got a back flap with visual cracks.  And a pulled flap advertises "I'M HIDING THINGS!" The numerous thieves here in Houston will smash your window if they see anything  (We covet what we see).  I once had my window bashed in and the only thing missing were Reeses Pieces.

The stuff I choose to leav...

THE NEW CHASE VEHICLE :D

After 2 months of researching and shopping, I believe I got a practical new chase vehicle.  A Toyota Rav4.

In order to be a real chase vehicle though, it needs 2 things.

1. Hail damage

2. A stupid name

One of those we can take care of right now...

Can we do better than the T.I.T.2 ???

NEW FORM OF LIGHTNING Caught on Camera!

The picture above is a type of lightning called Ground-to-Cloud lightning, or upward-moving lightning captured last week in Kansas.  Visually, you can see it reach upward from tall man made structures and then blossom into the clouds. I have been striving to capture good, close video of it for years and last week finally succeeded beyond wildest dreams.

SOMETHING ELSE WEIRD WAS GOING ON... Upward moving lightning is the rarest of strikes. I cross paths with it about once or twice a ...

PLAN A TODAY

The Storm Prediction Center was kind enough to outline our target area today in a mesoscale discussion (MD). MD's are the days cheat sheets or cliff notes for forecasters who are low on time. Plan A today is to head NW into the center of a very weak tornado potential environment. Once that ends I'll start cutting distance back home to Houston where a small coma is forecast.

LIEOWA

Storm chasers joke that Iowa is "Lieowa." So many let-downs I guess. Today, it's really not looking too great in Lieowa... but perhaps that is the lie? Currently targeting west of Des Moines and will fine tune with the hours. YESTERDAY WAS AMAZING. I know I've been saying that a lot, but damn! After decades, I think I finally captured some great video of upward lightning (lightning striking up). Havent had a chance to review it, but if it's good, this will be a powerful addition to the cha...

Torn Between Storms

Two areas to choose from today... 1. Southern OK/ north TX: - 2% tornado might increase to 5% - more storm coverage, likely messy - good Sprite potential - 8 hours commute round trip (plus rat race chasing) 2. CO/KS/OK panhandle - 2 % tornado - isolated photogenic supercell potential (relaxing) - 2.5 hours commute (tomorrow's storms in KS) - lower Sprite potential YESTERDAY: More pretty sunset lighting. I'd like to find a way to share photos with yall on the go, but i think pinging ...

This Week's Schedule

CURRENTLY IN HASWELL COLORADO. If I roll the windows down, the flies come in. If i keep em up, it gets hot.
