Former BoE economist and author Dan Davies joins us to talk about Central Bank Digital Currencies, programmable money, and the ongoing quest of central banks to hoard more power. Also, we unlock the details of Starmer’s pledge to make the U.K. the fastest growing economy in the G7 by luck or possibly magic, but without significant investment in state capacity building.

Terror has a new dimension. Alice, Riley, and returning guest, journalist Seamus Malekafzali (@Seamus_Malek) talk about the Saudi pivot to the third dimension. Also, Labour’s fabulous plans to fix criminal justice “by just using people from the town,” and Matt Hancock’s foray into NFT’s only about one year too late.

For this month's second Britainology, we're delving into the history of British cars and their dismal fate at the hands of Thatcherism. We could have had even more Rovers and Austins and Vanden Plases, but instead we wound up with most British cars being rebadged German vehicles. But we did at least get an Atomic Kitten Rover-MG ZS, and a SmartCar with a v8 dropped inside it.

We've done it again. We've subjected Nish Kumar to a terrible political book. However, rather than being a UK politician's attempt at literary fiction, we've instead delved into Harry Cole and James Heale's ill-timed work 'Out of the Blue: The inside story of the unexpected rise and rapid fall of Liz Truss.' And we experienced it with about 300 of you, at Backyard Comedy in London on February 20, 2023. Hope you enjoy!

Friend of the show Dr Eleanor Janega (@GoingMedieval) joins the gang to discuss her new book, The Once and Future Sex, about misogyny through the ages, and how while the justifications change, the outcome is always the same. It is a depressingly relevant conversation to the ongoing campaign of stochastic terrorism carried out against transgender people and immigrants by the great and the good of the country.

For this month's first Britainology, Nate and Milo watched the first installment of the Up series, the 1964 mini-documentary SEVEN UP! Filmed as a commentary on Britain's class system and unintentionally becoming a time lapse of the Baby Boomers, it's still an absolute gem of British Pathé Voice, and much more. We hope you enjoy.

There's a rumor circulating that Liz Truss may be making a comeback. Well, she might think so--and she's written an article about it. We review this excellent piece of writing line-by-line, as well as addressing some coin-minting antipathy from a weird Canadian columnist that Riley found. We very much hope you enjoy.

This week, we speak with Joe Weisenthal (@TheStalwart) of the Bloomberg dot com Odd Lots podcast about minting the coin. But not just any coin: a strange loophole in a ’90s law designed to let the U.S. Mint produce collectors’ coins basically means that, if they wanted to, the director could order the Mint to issue a platinum coin of any denomination. Two dollars. Ten million ...

We had to do it. We had to read the book. We had to access this pure stream of Britainology from the source. And in truth it was a strange experience—not altogether horrible but also at times deeply, deeply stupid. We hope you enjoy this recounting of the time Milo and Nate both read Prince Harry's memoir.

Abi Thorn (@PhilosophyTube) joins Riley, Milo, and Alice for a mostly dessert episode today! (Hussein continues to recover from a wasting disease, and will be back soon). In the mean time we’ve got news, startups, more Elon nonsense, and then to top it off we try to elucidate “Starmerism” as a political theory, rather than just a media management strategy.

For this month's first Britainology, Nate and Milo examine a BBC children's show that has been running since the 1950s, despite no one watching it. Hope you enjoy.
