The Good Life: Wagers (ch. 71)

“Already!? You have a functioning prototype already!?” Heimerdinger blurted, unable to restrain his surprise as he once more stood in the lab of his pupils. The most secure lab in the university was always reserved for those whose creations possessed the potential for revolutionary effects and dangerous accidents. It was rare to have more than one such pupil in the lab at a time -- largely due to conflicting egos -- so it was nothing less than heartwarming to see a collaborative effort of...

The Good Life: Narcissistic Cannibal (ch. 70)

“No wonder you and Law get along so well -- you both love your little experiments,” Yoruichi noted as Sukuna glanced up from the book that he was reading, his feet propped up on a desk while he waited for the results of his latest… well, experiment was likely the correct word but it was more that he was indulging his curiosity. He didn't have a particular outcome in mind or a result he'd like to see. He just wanted to see what happened.

The Good Life: Mad Science (ch. 69)

Getting my hands on what was rapidly coming to be known as Hex Crystals changed the whole ballgame for me. Ever since I arrived in this world I've been able to perceive mana in my Room, but it was elusive by nature. It was just so… weird, so wholly unique, that every time I tried to grasp it, it slipped through my fingers like smoke. In the end, it was an issue of perception. It was the difference between guessing what something might taste like and actually knowing what it tasted like.

The Good Life: Momentum (ch. 68)

“La da ah-ah-ah,” I sang under my breath, humming a song that I didn't know the name of as I pieced together two parts of a contraption. Another invention that I had started playing around with in the aftermath of my rather successful debut to high society. It was just the first step in many more to come, but I had put my best foot forward and the results were already paying off.

I was granted a scholarship to the university, as well as a personal workshop that I could use. I'm not...

Legends Never Die: Wheels in Motion (ch. 103)

“Charlemagne is winning,” I voiced, unsurprised by the development but I could and did find it rather annoying. I had really hoped that he would stumble here, even if I knew, objectively, it was better if he won as he would be tied down in the region for years to come. Hadi and the thirty thousand men that were sent with him were already sweeping across the South. I didn't know how far they had gone, but I would be shocked if Hadi failed to take at least one city by now.

The battle...

Legends Never Die: Audacity (ch. 102)

The treasury of the Umayyads was a thing that bordered on absurdity. I had seen the obscene wealth on display in Constantinople, and Norland was a rich and prosperous port, rapidly becoming one of the most important in the Mediterranean, so I was no stranger to wealth by this point. Yet, there was something that just inspired an instinctual awe in the sight of a hoard built from dozens of cities rivaling Norland sending funds to a treasury that was guided by able administrators and a wise kin...

Legends Never Die: Maverick (ch. 101)

I found the Balearic Islands quite beautiful. They were beautiful in the same way Crete was, though unlike Crete, there was significantly more greenery: trees, grass, and shrubbery… combined with the mountainous terrain, which featured steep, sheer white cliff sides, soft sand beaches, and shallow harbors boasting brilliant blue waters…

It felt like the gods were tempting me at times. Tempting me to stay in this land, to leave my quest for vengeance behind. I could do it. The allia...

Legends Never Die: Moments of Peace (ch. 100)

The alliance was struck, and it truly was a colossal weight off of my shoulders, I thought to myself as my ship sailed back into Norland’s harbor. My departure and arrival were disguised as my visiting one of the outposts on Sicily, ensuring that my meeting with the Caliph would be known by only those that were there. There was some part of me that worried that the information would somehow reach Irene's ears all the same, but… it was simply a risk I had to take.

A Fun Time: Frauce Kingdom 4.1 (ch. 11)

“Is this what Cocoyashi is going to be like…?” Nami wondered, turning her gaze out to the scene of Clockwork Island, a spoon of half-melted ice cream in her hand that was halfway towards her mouth before she paused. News of the island being liberated had spread in the recent weeks, thanks to the newspaper announcing that the Trump Pirates, minus Boo Jack, were all arrested. In that time, a few merchant ships eager to deliver amenities and look for good contracts had arrived and departed...

The Good Life: Small World (ch. 67)

There were some days that Mel Medarda was almost thankful that her mother had banished her from Noxus. It was a brutal land that only understood force and strength -- where your value came from what you could take from others and how well you could protect what you had. Piltover, in comparison, was an enlightened city. Physical strength meant nothing. What mattered was your mind, and how you applied it.

“The invitations have been given,” Mel's assistant informed her as a team applie...

Legends Never Die: Forgotten Conversations (ch. 99)

It was strange to think, but under different circumstances, I believe Caliph Harun Al-Rashid and I could have been friends. If I had been a Muslim, or he a Norseman, I suspected that we would have gotten along quite well. Our interests overlapped more than I expected. He had been a shy conversationalist until we reached a topic that he was invested in.

I didn't know how to feel about it, in all honesty. I didn't really have any friends, at least none my age. Thorkel was a friend and a ...

Best of Intentions: Move (ch. 14)

Railguns were pretty simple, truth be told. It was a pretty basic principle applied to a logical extreme -- guided magnetic propulsion. You built up an electric charge with a ferrous metal, usually a chunk of iron, stick it between a guide which acted as the barrel of the gun, then you let the sucker fly at whatever had the misfortune of being in its path. As a weapon, it had a lot of potential. The strength of the shot was entirely determined by the charge of the shot as well as the structur...

Rhaegar Targaryen was possessed by a nervous energy. It had possessed him since Steffon Baratheon claimed to have found a valyrian bride of worthy stock some months ago in Volantis. As a result, the situation was… less than ideal.

“I should have been married within the Seven Kingdoms,” Rheager uttered, a finger tapping at a table while he pinched a goblet of wine with white knuckles. He only dared to utter the words out loud in the presence of a few people, and only in locations ...

Best of Intentions: River Below (ch. 13)

Chris had to admit that things… weren't going that great.. It wasn't really a surprise. Things not going great is probably the best way to understate that the world was staring down the barrel of a gun, one in the hands of idiots with itchy trigger fingers.

That being said, things could always be worse. “I think I'm a glass half full kind of guy,” Chris remarked to Brad, who gave him an absolutely bewildered look as the double door that they were both leaned against began to heav...

Ned soon found that he had underestimated the harshness of Skagos, as all his plans fell apart upon the discovery that he had beheaded the very last of the Crowl bloodline, something he could scarce believe even now. The North was by far the harshest of the Seven Kingdoms, but even those Northern Houses with few branches had cousins. Even as sparse as the Stark bloodline had become, as his father was an only child, he still had cousins that could take the Stark name if the need arose.

Getting the jitters was a pretty normal part of life. No one was immune to it -- I sure wasn't. Back before it all began, before the ball really started rolling and I crossed the Rubicon, I had been anxious and uncertain about going through with being Heartless. I had taken over the gangs of New York, but I could have just taken the kick up and vanished without a trace. I hadn't been on anyone's radar at that point. The Seven had no clue I existed.

I had been excited at enacting a chil...

Hadi had a plan.

It wasn't an ideal one. Not even close. But, that was to be expected in his trying circumstances. If things were ideal, then he wouldn't be in this situation in the first place -- married to an ambitious and beautiful woman, a regent to a young Emir, and a close advisor to the Caliph himself.

It was awful. Every night, he went to sleep begging that it all be a dream and every morning he awoke to his greatest nightmare made manifest. Some days he wondered if the ...
