“This place is a ruin,” Nora observed as we stood the wreckage of MIT. The building itself was shaped like a bracket with what had once been a green park running up the center to a dome. Behind us was the brackish brown river that was filled with radiation and not much else. The dome had collapsed, as had the long arms. I wasn't sure what exactly had happened, but some of the damage looked like it was caused by explosions.
Her tone was unsteady. Not quite happy, not quite excited. ...

Taylor caught a glimpse of red hair as they stepped into the dilapidated Hallucigen building. Her insects detected something in the air, but their senses couldn't detect exactly what it was, but to be safe, they entered the building with gas masks on. The building wasn't any more dangerous or run down than the others in the area, but Taylor felt her heart start to pound in her chest while her hands started getting clammy.
“What we're looking for is probably in the CEO's office,” Law...

If Kobeni had to summarize her entire life in a handful of words, they would be ‘a series of unfortunate events.’ She had been born underneath a lucky star, as her mother had once said, but her mother neglected to mention that luck was completely neutral. Being lucky meant as much bad luck as it meant good luck. Her birth marked an unfortunate turning point in her life, and ever since then, it had just been one thing after another.
She thought that being a Devil Hunter would have ...

It took another two weeks for us to hear the truth of the battle between the Romans and the Abbasids. The battle had been a series of clashes -- the Romans attacked the Abbasids outside of a castle, breaking their siege, before defeating them in the field. After that, the Abbasids began to retreat, only to find themselves pursued by the Romans, where they clashed in the field once more. It was in that battle that Prince Hadi was killed, and I also heard that the Caliph Al-Mhadi had been wound...

“The tiger is tame so long as you don't go anywhere near her. But his idea of what counts as too close changes minute by minute. Made for a really awkward ride back,” Thorkell said before tipping his head back, taking several large gulps from a horn of ale while one of our healers saw to a wound he had taken on his side. His ribs were purple and yellow, but over them was a long cut. His chainmail had saved his life. As he described it, a blade punched through the rings at an angle that cu...

Without boats filled with treasure, the sail back to Norland was relatively quick even with the much slower Abbasid ships. After a quick day of sailing, we arrived at the docks to cheering applause that didn't diminish even when they learned that we came back empty handed. That, I suspected, was because we had already brought back more wealth than most people had ever seen and we could barely store it all as it was.
There was also a collective air of relief that we were done with the w...

The battle was a fierce one, but Acre still fell to us in little time. And not wholly because we managed to overcome the defenders. I felt it in my bones that Hadi, the commander that had proven to be a thorn in my side since this war began, was behind it. They contested our landing, drew what blood that they could, before large swathes of the defenders fell back to the citadel.
The citadel itself was not overly impressive, but that stemmed mostly because of how old it was. I did feel ...

What the fuck did you even do?” Becca openly gaped at L, struggling to process what she had just heard. She thought she was well used to his particular brand of ins...

“All things considered, that went as well as it could have,” I remarked, up and out of the hospital bed that I was carted to. I looked in a mirror to see a fresh set of stitches held together my eyebrow from where Vicious tore them with those hamfists he called hands. Despite getting hit with a massive pokemon attack with enough force that I had been rag-dolled and subsequently died afterward in my last life, I was sporting a few bruises and that was it.
“Really?” Marnie asked,...

I felt calm as we descended into the belly of the beast. There was fear there, pooling in my gut, but it was firmly in check. I controlled it rather than the fear controlling me. If I had to describe what I felt in a single word, then the word righteous came to mind. And if I was being honest, I don't think it was a natural feeling.
Karen had alluded to it, but people didn't come back like I did. Even ghost trainers. I had suspected as much for some time now, but the body was influenci...

“Left, left, left, right, left,” I chanted, running next to Mankey and I had to admit, I was doing a lot better than I thought I would be after a solid three hours of running. Pokemon humanity seemed to start at a base level of Olympic athletes and only got better from there. My t-shirt was soaked through with sweat, and I got sand under my ankle weights, so that kinda sucked, but other than that, I was great. I wasn’t even tired, not really.

Marnie got her gym badge and the entire battle was pretty enlightening. Especially when she had been marked for one of the play battles -- she wasn't given lines or anything, but she had been described on the stage by a narrator rather than an announcer. The entire thing was pretty funny, but I found it hard to tease Marnie because I ended up getting picked for a play match as well.
“A rugged hero, a cute sidekick, and a mysterious figure?” I echoed, looking at the contract before ...

The latest poll is over and it was a pretty close one since the very start! Tanya and Azula were within 10 votes of each other the entire time, so I'd call them both winners in this case. And, as always, the polls are to determine interest in characters and not a promise that they'll actually show up. It depended on if I think they would fit a setting that I'm jumping to, like Taylor. And, for future reference, here is the final tally:
Tanya Degurechaff (Youjo Senki) 1,395 votes...

“I would like a human body,” Curie announced as we were putting the finishing touches on my control over the Institute. The deal was pretty simple, when it came right down to it -- the Institute was going to be absorbed into Nuka-World's overall structure as our science division. They would dedicate research to what we wished to be researched -- food production, environmental treatments, and so on.
All in exchange for supplies, materials, and a degree of autonomy. The Institute was...

“What the fuck do you mean, he's been captured?” Rumi blurted, a frown twisting at her lips as she regarded Taylor coldly. Another psychopath in Law’s merry band of them. The girl was young, around the age she would have started going to UA, and back home she already would have been a dangerous villain. That, however, wasn't the issue. “How could he get captured? His power lets him go wherever he wants.”

I was pretty satisfied with how things had turned out, I thought, looking down at the sea of Abbasid soldiers that we had managed to pen in. It had been a challenge, but for weeks, I had been slowly setting the stage for this. It hadn't been easy and the cost was honestly higher than I would have preferred, but given that we had encircled an army twice our size, I suppose around five hundred dead or wounded was perfectly acceptable.
It was the same trick that King Widukind did back in ...

Some basic context first. The Japanese government is centered in Tokyo, specifically in one of its ‘special wards’ - parts of Tokyo that are basically cities in and of themselves - called Chiyoda. Right smack dab in the heart of the Megacity.
