It wasn’t often that I stepped behind the bar in the Blushing Maid. It was a rare occurrence that I tended to reserve for special occasions. The eradication of one of the few rival gangs left in the city was this such occasion -- since everyone that had lived in the slums was squatting on the streets either because their house burned down or their landlord was vastly hiking up the rent to force them out, gangs were on the rise. Some sought revenge upon me and the Rabbits. Those gangs didn...

Duncan could taste blood upon his tongue, and he found it tasted sweet instead of like iron, while his hands clutched a crude sword and a shield made of a wagon wheel as he mindlessly hacked at the corpse of a man, sending up rivets of blood with each swing. His body was covered in gore, blood dripping from him in rivers, before he looked up to the sky above and belted out a monstrous roar of domination.
More of his ilk emerged from the woods at his primitive signal, their forms as twis...

“I’m here with an offer,” a young elven man said, sitting in a chair across from me, his hands clasped in front of him. His hair was light brown, his eye a pale blue. He was handsome enough, but rather plain looking for an elf, though the drab and plain-looking clothing that he wore didn’t exactly help him there. “That I believe will be to the benefit of both of the organizations we represent.” He opened with, sounding confident if tense, but I got the feeling he wasn't half as co...

As it would turn out, King Widukind's need for exact measurements worked out perfectly for us. The scouts that were sent out to patrol the countryside and monitor the Frankish army had reported almost everything that they had seen, ranging from good terrain, poor terrain, hamlets, villages, and towns. There was a rather clearly marked border between what they explored and everything beyond it, but at the very least, it served as a starting point to decide our course of action.
There wer...

I found King Widukind in a tavern. It was one of decent make, more stone than wood, though the floors were made from thick wooden planks. Furniture was of decent make, but it was currently stacked up along the walls to make room for the comings and goings of messengers. At the heart of the tavern were a long couple of tables that were pushed together to hold the model that was being meticulously assembled. One of Frankfurt was being combined with one of the surrounding area. King Widukind him...

“You’re a great warrior,” Thorkell told me as we watched the people of Frankfort be led out of the city gates. King Widukind didn’t want them eating the food in case there was a siege. That wasn’t to say everyone had left the city. Many had been taken as thralls. Others were captives. And some were kept for the pleasure of men. “But, you’re a poor leader of men,” he said, earning a slow blink from me as I looked away from the angry tide of people forced to leave their homes wi...

It was surprisingly hard to find an army, I discovered as we sailed up the Rhine River. One would think that it would be difficult to misplace so many men, but when we sailed down the Elba river, asking villages where King Widukind was, there was a stunning lack of recent information, though plenty of misinformation. I heard a dozen different answers about where King Widukind was going when I asked a dozen different villages.
Instead of trying to discern which answers were truthful from...

Kiwi already had programs running in the background by the time we pulled up to her apartment, with eleven hours and forty-five minutes left on the clock. Her apartment itself was near the heart of Kabuki, in a high rise that offered a great view of the city. A view that went ignored as Kiwi outright forbade me from working on my laptop in favor of letting me access her spare setup. I heard the sound of shedding clothing and the clinking of ice as she prepared an ice bath to dive into the net...

"He's selling corpses to Maelstrom," Lucy pointed out to him, resting her head against his shoulder while the two of them watched Rebecca coach L on how to shotgun a beer. How drunk L was was anyone's guess since he had already puked twice because of the taste.
David knew. He heard it mentioned by Doc when he was getting some maintenance done. He was pretty sure that he had slotted in a reflex tuner from someone that L had dropped. "It wasn't my intention," David admitted. "The lesson w...

Flashing lights alerted me that the police were following us, and as soon as they did, a program kick-started in the car. I could have killed it easily enough but chose not to, letting the truck that I was in slow down and guide itself to the curb. Pretty much every single vehicle in Night City came with a kill switch that the cops had access to. It was nearly standard practice to disable it if you intended to live a life of crime.

Was this what we escaped for? It was a question that weighed heavily in my mind as I looked at the bright neon streets, casting away the deep shadows that fell upon Night City. The lights felt necessary considering that the outside world lived underneath a dark ceiling. My gaze lingered on a back alley that had a dumpster that was overflowing with garbage to the point that it was buried and surrounded by plastic bags.
I still preferred alleys, but standing on a road wasn’t that bad. I...

"It's not too late to call this off," Shianni told me, a hand going to mine as we brazenly sat upon the wall to the alienage. We were able to see over most buildings, and were granted a decent enough view of the city. The view from the Arls Estate was better, though. There wasn't a whole lot to see, really. Just a bunch of roofs with the occasional thief using them as an entrance or exit. Soris was next to me, idly chewing on a sandwich -- thick with roasted ham, greens, an egg, and squished ...

Novigrad was under siege, but it wasn’t by Nilfgaard. It was being besieged by an army of refugees, Ciri saw as she and Guts approached the city in the early morning, almost as soon as the first rays of sunlight crested the horizon of the Great Sea. It wasn’t the first time she had visited the city, but it had radically changed from what she recalled in her memory. The shanty town outside of the city was greatly expanded, almost tripling in size in almost every direction, with only the we...

My brothers were burnt together in a large pyre -- Brandr and Tormod. The others helped me build the pyre, and in a solemn silence, we gathered the bones. I had them buried where the bones of my grandparents and brother were laid to rest. Brandr and Tormod joined them. Only the bones of Havi and Father were missing.
I hoped the dead wouldn’t mind. Just as I hoped they were all reunited in Valhalla. All of my brothers had died well -- they died defending their family, giving the women ...

I woke to an unfamiliar ceiling. The segmented pale plates were gone, replaced with a uniform oneness that was only broken up by lighting. There was no momentary bliss of forgetting what happened. It was impossible when I woke up laying in a soft bed with sheets so soft and smooth that it was almost uncomfortable. The moment that I woke up, I started to push myself into a sitting position and my thoughts were confirmed.
I wasn't in the orphanage. Every day of my life, I woke up in the s...

"So, you can make copies of yourself?" Peter questioned, his jaw-dropping as he looked at Seb Two, then back at me, then back at Seb Two. "Is that your superpower?"
"Nah,” Seb Two answered.
“My superpower is that cool stuff drops in my lap every once in a while. It's how I got the AT's and the yoyo,” I added on with a supporting nod from Seb Two. “It’s happened since I was a kid, but I had to leave a lot of my stuff behind when I left home.” The only thing that I took ...

I stood in my Cave of Wonders and realized that I needed to take inventory, because it went from completely empty to being a goddamn mess over the course of… well, a day, but several dozen timelines. There were just piles of weapons tossed around haphazardly, no method of sorting to organize them. So, it was time to take inventory in preparation for my next adventure of ripping off a gang. Or a couple of gangs. Or maybe all of them. I’m not particularly picky.
To start with -- I had...

"I can't believe they're making us go back to school. New York got invaded by aliens. They should totally just cancel it for the year! Er, well, maybe that would be a bit much. They should cancel it for at least a semester, though," Peter groused as he poured over my Air Treks on a busted up desk that had seen its best days long before Peter found it. His room was pretty sparse except for when it came to tools -- a single mattress spring bed, no real decorations of any kind…
