My brothers were burnt together in a large pyre -- Brandr and Tormod. The others helped me build the pyre, and in a solemn silence, we gathered the bones. I had them buried where the bones of my grandparents and brother were laid to rest. Brandr and Tormod joined them. Only the bones of Havi and Father were missing.
I hoped the dead wouldn’t mind. Just as I hoped they were all reunited in Valhalla. All of my brothers had died well -- they died defending their family, giving the women ...

“He’s waking up,” I heard someone say as a low groan escaped my throat, the pounding in my head waking me up. It felt like someone was using the insides of my skull as a wardrum. I felt something being pressed to my lips, but I spilled it against my face when I turned to the side. “It’s water. You need to drink,” I heard another voice say and with the utmost reluctance, I parted my lips and let the water flow into my dry mouth. My tongue felt swollen, and my throat caked in sand, ...

“I don’t think there’s a business more profitable than war,” I muttered to myself as the boats were being loaded up with cargo near Hedeby. It was a city that was even larger than Alabu. I thought that we would… stop by the city, but Jarl Horrik sent the army home to enjoy their prizes. The hundred odd ships were loaded up with all the wealth taken from our very profitable war in the Frankish Kingdom.
Ageric had been ransomed rather quickly. As had those that were taken for sl...

The bell was a surprisingly pleasant sound, I thought as I led the few hundred warriors up the main road, sprinting as fast as we could. The dirt was well packed from so many people walking on it, so it almost acted as stone underfoot. The houses that flanked the road were made of wood with thatch roofs, wood logs that were sealed with mud made the walls, and carved planks filled the doors. The walls of the city were also pretty tall -- a dozen feet of solid stone.
But, out of everythin...

I woke to an unfamiliar ceiling. The segmented pale plates were gone, replaced with a uniform oneness that was only broken up by lighting. There was no momentary bliss of forgetting what happened. It was impossible when I woke up laying in a soft bed with sheets so soft and smooth that it was almost uncomfortable. The moment that I woke up, I started to push myself into a sitting position and my thoughts were confirmed.
I wasn't in the orphanage. Every day of my life, I woke up in the s...

I slammed my head into the dash, my ears filled with nothing but the sound of screeching metal while I was tossed around the interior of the flying car. My back hit something, then my side, but it was next to impossible to tell what I was hitting because I could only see red or glitches from my optics. After a second that felt like forever, the interior stopped spinning, leaving me rested in the… ceiling from the looks of it. "Hnngh…" I grunted, a hand going to my side because it sure fel...

The alarm was the single loudest thing that I had ever heard in my life. The younger kids reacted with a primal instinct to cower away from it, their hands going to their ears and recoiling away from the sound that echoed loudly through the hallway. Those of us that were older reacted better to it. It was similar to the alarms that we heard in tactical sims, giving us some level of resistance to it, but it also meant that we knew what was happening.
The guards were coming.
"We nee...

I opened my eyes to a familiar ceiling, yet it wasn't one that sat above my dorm. It was the ceiling belonging to the physical labor room. One of them, at least. In my time, I've seen three of them. "Good morning, boys," I heard the familiar voice of Dr. D announce, and without fail, he woke us up with that phrase. I'm not entirely sure what it meant and he never explained, even when we asked. Said that we wouldn't get it.
"Good morning, Dr. D," I intoned, a well-trained response and I ...

My blood felt like it was boiling in my veins, cooking me from the inside out, and the gallons of sweat that dripped from me did nothing to cool me down. It only managed to make the gown that I wore soaked, plastering it to my chest, as I worked on soaking through the hospital bed that I was strapped to. I grit my teeth, shifting my arms and legs, trying to find a position that would offer some kind of relief, but I only chaffed my wrist and ankles where the restraints were.

I stood in my Cave of Wonders and realized that I needed to take inventory, because it went from completely empty to being a goddamn mess over the course of… well, a day, but several dozen timelines. There were just piles of weapons tossed around haphazardly, no method of sorting to organize them. So, it was time to take inventory in preparation for my next adventure of ripping off a gang. Or a couple of gangs. Or maybe all of them. I’m not particularly picky.
To start with -- I had...

"I can't believe they're making us go back to school. New York got invaded by aliens. They should totally just cancel it for the year! Er, well, maybe that would be a bit much. They should cancel it for at least a semester, though," Peter groused as he poured over my Air Treks on a busted up desk that had seen its best days long before Peter found it. "I want him found. Now," Nick Fury stated, his tone harsh and matter of fact as he stood at the bridge of the Helicarrier. Stark's hologram projectors had been repurposed, letting him stand on the bridge and examine a dozen different information feeds at once. It was convenient. Less turning, for one. At the moment, all of the holograms projected one thing -- Codename Roller Derby.

Given that I was going to be seen on the news, and I had some extra time between the murders of past me, I had gotten a change of clothes. Not particularly because I wanted to look nice for the cameras -- I honestly don't think I could have cared less even if I actively tried -- but to avoid being traced. New York City had cameras everywhere. Just not where crimes happened for some weird reason. But, going out in the same clothes that I would have been recorded wearing by dozens of cameras wo...

“I don’t know about this,” the prospective Rabbit muttered under his breath, looking down at the knife in his hands. One shorter than his palm. An intentional choice -- it was to show the recruits that even if the blade was small, we could kill with them. “What if someone sees me?” He asked, his gaze going to Soris. The tall, lanky, awkward elf had vanished at some point. Soris was still tall, still lanky, but there was a weight to his gaze that hadn’t been there before. And after...

There was a change in the alienage after the fire. Soris likened it to it being the final straw -- First, the purge on the alienage, then the lockdown, and now, after we had built a new orphanage, the Arls' own son came and burned the building down and tried to burn half a hundred orphans alive with it. There was a tension in the alienage that seemed to fill the air, and signs of it could be seen everywhere, from the groups of elves muttering darkly to each other, to people moving everywhere ...

The Fade was a dangerous place. It was as alien to the denizens of Thedas as Thedas was to the inhabitants of the Fade. Spirits and Demons alike. Unlike the people of the world, demons longed to enter the mortal realm because, despite the presence of magic in the world, the Fade was more connected to Thedas than Thedas was to the Fade. For most people, outside of mages, the Fade was simply a place that you entered when you fell asleep and had a dream before waking up.
For the Fade, the ...

Murder got a lot easier with practice. Both in the sense of the actual act of murder and the toll it took on your mental state. While the difference between one murder and a hundred was about a hundred murders, after the first five or six, the guilt stopped hitting as hard. As for the act itself? With practice, it became shockingly apparent just how fragile the body was. So fragile it was an honest wonder that people weren't dropping like flies every time they fell or slept a bit funny.

"You couldn't have waited five seconds?!" Ciri snapped at him the moment they were both out of the door, chasing the monster down. He almost thought it was an apostle given how it spoke and acted. It transformed like one too, but he hadn't encountered an apostle that would flee like this. The creature was bipedal, moving on all fours at times, but between clinging to shadows it seemed to… glide. Almost as if it were fading out of existence to avoid the sunlight, a slight afterimage blurring...

We lost three hundred men in total, counting those that were too injured to keep fighting. It was a great victory by any stretch of the imagination, but we only had a thousand men so we felt the loss of those three hundred very keenly. Still, it was an obvious win and it was celebrated as such. The dead were stripped of their arms, armor, and whatever wealth they had on them. The Frank camp was raided, granting us a great deal of food.
In the immediate aftermath of the battle, despite t...

I wanted to start off by giving a big thank you for the feedback everyone gave yesterday -- and secondly, I want to clarify something. I'm probably going to give people PTSD flashbacks with this, but I'm not abandoning Gone Native. I'll finish the story even if it kills me. I'm still really excited for it, it's just putting pen to paper has been a bit tough lately.
With that out of the way, after sleeping on it and reading all of your suggestions, I think I've more or less decided...

Elery's head snapped back as the kitchen was absolutely demolished in her wake as she tore through the wall like it wasn't even there before striking the crystal clear blue water with explosive force, sending up tons of water while she shot down into the depths of the ocean. The salt in the water stung her bleeding nose that felt like it had been crushed under the punch. Even before her thoughts caught back up to her, Elery felt the telltale vibration of a major league fight.

She guessed that it had to be when dealing with a Kryptonian. Even still, Elery noticed that the metallic surface was looking more than a little dinged up.
Kara gave her a rather flat look, "Your brother is always plotting something. I think it's the closest thing he has to a hobby." She pointed out, tapping a finger against the cou...

"I'm really getting tired of hearing that," I returned to Poison Ivy, my eyes narrowed into slits. Saibamen. They surrounded us on all sides, twisted grins on their faces while their claws flexed and clenched as if they were imagining tearing us limb from limb. It had been some time since I last saw Saibamen. Before the war, they were the Saiyans favorite training tool.
Their power was something that was only limited by soil quality, and they grew to maturity in a minute with a growth a...

“I will give you this, Pamela Isley -- you’re brave,” I muttered with a snarl etched into my face. Every muscle was taut as I stared at the hologram projector that gave me the alert. The planet was on the very edge of my empire, nearly on the exact opposite end away from Earth. Due to that, it wasn’t particularly developed, which was a blessing. However, it was also the homeworld for a race called Methanosians. One of their members had been among the 501st, at one point, I recalled.
