From the Ashes: Flash Fire (ch. 8)

The fortress was less a fortress and more what I imagined a villa to look like. It was as pretty as a painting, situated upon a high cliff that gave it a great view of the Hinterlands and Lake Calenhad. The view really was stunning, and the thought of living all the way up here, while lonely, seemed impressive. However, the villa itself looked like it hadn't been properly maintained in a very long time. The white marble stone walls -- an odd choice given that every other stone was granite as ...

Legends Never Die: Celebration (ch. 14)

We lost three hundred men in total, counting those that were too injured to keep fighting. It was a great victory by any stretch of the imagination, but we only had a thousand men so we felt the loss of those three hundred very keenly. Still, it was an obvious win and it was celebrated as such. The dead were stripped of their arms, armor, and whatever wealth they had on them. The Frank camp was raided, granting us a great deal of food.

In the immediate aftermath of the battle, despite t...

Legends Never Die: Making Way (ch. 13)

The Franks roared at me as I neared, their spears braced, their shields up, and their formation ready to rebuff us. With the army charging down the hill, the screams from thousands of men filling the air until it seemed to shake with the force of it, I struck the first blow by slicing the head off a spear before slamming into the formation with a Power Attack. I saw the Frankish man scream as my axe shattered his shield like rotten timber, the edge of my axe digging into his body in a slash t...

Legends Never Die: Introductions (ch. 12)

For my entire life, I had only ever known the farm. That small village of Ivarstead that had less than thirty people, my immediate family. I had no grandparents to speak of. They had performed Ättestupa in their old age since they were unable to die in battle and to lessen the burden on their families. For my entire life, my life had been on the farm. And now, in a single year, I’ve met two kings. I’ve spoken to them. And, judging by the look that King Charlemagne was giving me if I didn...

Legends Never Die: Blood Feud (ch. 11)

We lost about eighty men. Which seemed like so few in comparison to the battle there had been. There were another hundred that had been wounded, some of which were expected to die of their wounds. But, the battle was being celebrated as a great victory. The garrison at Sigiburg had surrendered when King Sigfred sent a thousand warriors as a show of force, meaning that in a handful of days, we had taken both forts.

King Widukind already set off to spread news of the victory to the Saxon ...

From the Ashes: Scorched Foundations (ch. 10)

A heads up -- Gacha God will be going live sometime this month. The reaction to this story has been a bit more than I anticipated, so rather than putting it on ice, I'll be continuing it up to a certain point. From the Ashes will become a bi-weekly story updated on Friday or Sunday, up until I reach a natural stopping point. The story would return when the next section is completed. This is mostly because writing six active stories at the same time in addition to my other side project...

You Are What You Eat (Resident Evil/Prototype)

For eternity, there was nothing. Then there was suddenly light.

"Put the sample down, doctor! Get on your knees with your hands on your head!" A harsh voice shouted, stirring me into awareness. I could see nothing. My body stirred as I was jostled in the hand of the unknown doctor-- there was a loud bang and I felt myself fall forward before my container was smashed open. My body spread across the ground -- the sensations…

It was like being born. Everything was suddenly so very ...

Castoff: Just Rewards (ch. 6)

The Witch Hunters paid well, Guts reflected, a pouch heavy with gold placed into his hand. Ciri went ignored for the most part, something that seemed to suit her rather well. While the gold was placed into his hand, a scarred man that was missing an ear along with a few pock marks on his face that didn’t seem to come from a pox along his face spoke, “Two royals for every Drowner ear, three for every ghoul claw, five for harpy wings. You’re a rich man… Guts,” the leader of the Witch ...

Legends Never Die: Next Steps (ch. 10)

“Hnngh…” I groaned, hearing the faint sound of screaming not too far off in the distance. As if someone was being muffled by a bite. My upper body felt incredibly sore, as if I had pulled every single muscle in my arms, shoulders, and back. I was used to the feeling of pushing myself a little too hard, but I had truly overdone it this time. I doubt I would be able to raise my arms above my head for a week. No- wait, I had Fast Healer. So, a few days.

Shifting my head made me open ...

Gone Native: Circling (ch. 56)

"I'm really getting tired of hearing that," I returned to Poison Ivy, my eyes narrowed into slits. Saibamen. They surrounded us on all sides, twisted grins on their faces while their claws flexed and clenched as if they were imagining tearing us limb from limb. It had been some time since I last saw Saibamen. Before the war, they were the Saiyans favorite training tool.

Their power was something that was only limited by soil quality, and they grew to maturity in a minute with a growth a...

Gone Native: Way Forward (ch. 55)

“I will give you this, Pamela Isley -- you’re brave,” I muttered with a snarl etched into my face. Every muscle was taut as I stared at the hologram projector that gave me the alert. The planet was on the very edge of my empire, nearly on the exact opposite end away from Earth. Due to that, it wasn’t particularly developed, which was a blessing. However, it was also the homeworld for a race called Methanosians. One of their members had been among the 501st, at one point, I recalled. View Post

Gone Native: Small Moments (ch. 54)

“Brainwashing seems like a jump,” Raven remarked as we stood in my throne room, surrounded on all sides by holograms that fed me information about my empire. As well as a number of projects that I had -- such as the Warworlds and the shield wall around my empire, to name a few. The one that I was focused on at the moment was harnessing the power of compassion so I could use it on my race to drive the concept of compassion into their heads. “I know you’re grasping at straws with this, ...

Gone Native: Extreme Measures (ch. 53)

Earth was still adapting, but it had done a lot of it over the past three months. To the point that it was honestly shocking.

Letting Lex Luthor remain in charge had been a gamble -- a dangerous one. I had no doubt in my mind that he was taking a mile with every inch that I gave him, building his powerbase on Earth to become a major figure in my empire. But I allowed it because, ultimately,  he was doing what I wanted -- leading Earth to develop this portion of my empire and integr...

From the Ashes: Roaring Flame (ch. 9)

It took me a long time to reach Denerim. The journey itself would take a month in the snow, but I spent another month out in the wilds. The decision was an easy one. A challenge to myself to winter out in the elements to see if I would survive. And survive I did.

My body was weighed down with furs -- a thick black pelt from a black bear I had accidentally stumbled upon on my way back. I tried to talk the bear into letting me stay the night there, but the bear decided that it had a littl...

"Have you never used a staff before?" Merrill asked me as I held a wooden staff in my hands that was elaborately engraved while the tip of the staff was curled roots around a focus that was inlaid with lyrium according to the Keeper and First duo. It was surprisingly heavy as I shook my head.

"The Templars would have found me," I answered. The revelation that I had magic shoehorned me into being the Second for the clan, but it was a position that was empty. People didn't know me, they d...

I had found the Dalish, but I wasn’t entirely sure if that was a good thing.

Before I was allowed anywhere near their camp, my hands were bound and Theron grilled me with questions while Tamlen carried my empty pack. He completely dismissed it because it was empty, and I counted that as a lucky break considering the bag would be revealed as magical upon inspection. Bright Feather considered his job done and moved on to wherever birds went at night. I didn’t know. Birds learned not t...

I stood in a great white expanse, a vast nothingness all around that almost hurt to look at. The only things of note were some amenities so far off in the distance that they were hardly specs in my vision, but there was a cafeteria, a private bath, and a door that would lead out of this space that seemed to stretch on for eternity. It was modeled after a memory of mine. Or, a memory of a past life. I thought it had been an exaggeration when I heard that staying in this white expanse could dri...
