What it's been like working on the Abney Park Musical.

As many of you have heard, I’m writing a musical. And wow, it’s coming out amazing! It’s both steampunk, and historically accurate, and of course it features the music of Abney Park, so you know it’ll be fantastic.

Casting was a very unusual experience for me. I posted about an opening casting, but I also went straight to the big time talent agencies, and wow, the talent I got was amazing!

In 2017 Abney Park released an album I'm insainly proud of, yet I feel often gets overlooked or forgotten (even by me!)

Crash was just an amazing album, full of power an emtion, and it contains some of the soungs I've written that I'm most proud of, like Captain Ulysees, The Rum Talking, Side by Side, Work Hard, and Tree House At The End Of The World.

So, I'm writing and recording a Musical.

Hey guys, I wanted to fill you in on what I've been up to this last month or so. 

Basically, I was commissioned to write a musical. It's a lightly steampunk musical, set in the late 1800's, a bit historical in nature, but mostly a story about fictional characters. Technically, I was commissioned to write the first part of a musical, to see if they like it...and they will LOVE it, I have no doubt!

TechnoShantys, coming Mar 6th

Dry January has left me with a LOT of extra time. So as an experiment, out of complete boredom, I went into the studio the other night to see what would happen if I put traditional pirate see shanties to big electronic industrial dance beats.

The result was amazing! Driving dance tracks that made you wanna sing at the top of your lungs!

After just two days, I now have four songs, some of the most bad ass stuff I’ve ever done.

HOLY CRAP! Abney Park lost treasure!

OK, so over the years, a whole bunch of Abney Park songs got lost. what I mean by that, is all of the files we need to play them live, somehow got lost as we constantly upgraded laptops, or laptops died in the line of duty.

A lot of fan favorite songs, from the olden days, could no longer be played live.

Christmas Sing-A-Long is next Saturday!

Next Saturday Abney Park is having a Christmas song-a-long, live streamed! Basically, every year we have a Christmas party for our friends and family. And every year we gather around the piano, and sing Christmas music. Since so many of our friends and family our musicians, it’s always wonderful.

New Video : The Root Of All Evil

I originally wrote this song as a heavy goth-rock track on our early 2000's album, "From Dreams Or Angels", and though that version is pretty great, I never felt the format of that song really made the lyrics stand out in the way they should. The arrangement and the lyrics seemed like separate entities that didn't go together.

So in 2018 I wrote this arrangement, featuring a lot more acoustic instrumentation and a feel that really represented the lyrics more authentically.

Abney Park Christmas Sing Along!

December 12th, Abney Park is going to live stream a Christmas song along, just for you patrons!

This will be a casual sing-along, just gathered around one of Kristina‘s pianos. I have a laptop open during it, so I can read your comments, and we can talk about what songs we wanna sing, and things like that.

Story Time With Captain Robert:

Here is a story about touring with the kids, and being stuck on Halloween.

My daughter just watched this, and is telling me the costumes she remembers people dressing in: "Hair Dryer Cowboy", "The Laptop Warrior" (who wore a laptop sleeve for a helmet), and "Boobie Aliens" with bras for faces!

When I was a Calvin & Hobbs aged boy, I lived with my father and sisters in Hawaii. Mom was an anthropologist living on the Island of Fiji at the time, studying Fijian Fire Walking, while we kids played on beaches, went to traditional “kill-a-pig-with-spears-and-roast-in-pit-luaus”. We  explored lava tubes, marveled at blow holes - we were at home on the islands. (Thats me and my dad in the picture, in our house on Ka'avakea Road).
