Step-By-Step Process // Tutorial

Here's a step by step process post and would you call it tutorial? Sure! This step-by-step gives an insight  on how I created my most recent post, and how to get that sketchy look. Let me know if you enjoy these types of posts and let me know if you have any questions!

Big thank you!

Thank you for the past few months of support. When I started this Patreon over the summer, I didn’t know if anyone would be interested in seeing my behind the scenes or getting critiques from me. Even though our numbers are few, I appreciate every single one of you for your support! I’ll be posting my first ‘step by step’ behind the scenes post this week as thanks!

Beauty Inktober Process Post

This is the second piece I made in one night. Usually I can do it fine, but after a long week of work, and being discouraged from my recent inktober pieces, I got messy and lazy and make lots of mistakes and smudges on this piece.

I tried to rush through it, just trying to finish the 31 pieces, enough to make 31 pages for my upcoming zine. But it’s hard to make 31 quality pieces in a row. Perhaps even impossible. My eyes weren’t able to keep open when I was finishing this piece, an...

Brief Ring Inktober Process Post

I’m getting pretty tired of inktobers and think a month is way too long to be doing this lol.

I had to restart this piece cuz I kept saying to myself ‘ok the arms are gonna be red the arms are gonna be red’ and then painted an arm black and facepalmed. That’s what you get for painting at 11pm after a long day of work! So I restarted it and it didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to, seems too similar to my previous piece ‘exposed’ and there’s a bit of weird negative...

Discovery Inktober Process Post

I couldn’t think of many ideas lately, but this is one that I like. I used a more red colour palette for this piece and think it’s pretty neat. Nice to make something I like again.

Exposed Inktober Process Post

Back at it again with the red inks! I love this piece and think it turned out great. I’ve been thumbnaillikg a lot of inktober pieces but only paint like 1/4 thumbnails. In such a creative dry spell, especially after working 8 hours a day! I hope the last 10 pieces won’t look like hot garbage and I’ll be able to be consistent with this style.

Entranced Inktober Process Post

Like the last piece, i tried to think outside the box and not focus on a full body piece. I focused on strong black and white shapes and negative space.

Trying some new things and I hope it turns out nicely!

Morning Tea Inktober Process Post

I live streamed this painting on my instragram, so there was a lot of pressure to perform well!

I wanted to make colours but I also wanted to finally use my red ink. After a lot of thought I said yolo and used the red ink. For the first try it well ok, but now I know I have to treat red ink differently than my black ink. My black ink is waterproof but this red clearly isn’t. I tried to do a light wash of the red ink over the flowers at the end but the lines washed away as well so I h...

Caged Inktober Process Post

I was getting very bored of my previous pieces and how similar they all were. I feel like I wasn’t being creative or learning anything. I was constructed to a full body pose, so I tried something different! I thought more of an illustration style piece, not making myself have the full body visible. I also kept it colourless, which I think turned out very nice!

Monstera Inktober Process Post

I knew exactly what colours I wanted in this piece, but I was still so indecisive! I just got some red ink and wanted to try it out so bad but I knew I didn’t want it on this piece. Heck I considered it for so long but in the end decided to go with green pastels.

I also had to google house plants to figure out what the monstera plant was called! I’ve seen it everywhere and can draw it but I wanted to see one to reference it. I always have a hard time angling leaves and the...

Butterfly Inktober Process Post

I like this piece a lot! When I know from the beginning which colours I want to use then I know it will be a confident piece. I even got a nice colouring pencil to do cheeks! No more blotchy cheeks in my house!

I haven’t been too happy with these inktobers lately, I have lots of criticism of them. I feel like they’re not creative enough or pushing myself at all. I went into Inktober deciding to make aesthetic pieces so I can sell them afterwards but I feel like that really hindered ...

Mermaid Inktober Process Post

This piece is my favourite so far! I kept it black and white because I’ve learned from my previous pieces that sometimes it’s better to keep it simple.

The hair is an ink wash, which requires lots of water, and I'm using a mixed media cardstock paper. This paper doesn't pick up water well and all and warps really easily. I learned from previous washes and this time it went better than expected. Paper barely warped and I had an even coating of ink! Huzzah!

I added lots of...

Bambi Inktober Process Post

For this piece I wanted to accentuate lil deer and sunflowers.

The end-piece is a little busier than I had hoped for and the shading isn’t as delicate as I’d liked. This paper doesn’t pick up water well at all so I had a very limited amount of tries for adding a light wash.

The shaded hair is the part I like the least, it's clunky and not delicate at all. I really think for these full-ink b&w pieces, I should use watercolour but heck, I love thick cardstock! ...

Sunny Days Inktober Process

With this piece, I decided to go colour (big deal for me). I've been having a real hard time with colour on all my pieces but for this one I saw the colours as I was inking it.

When I know which colours i want in advance, the coloured piece tends to look good! When I think about it for a long tie and can't decide, usually it ends up look like hot garbo.

Bunny Inktober Process Post

For this piece, I wasn’t sure how to add colour but I did anyway. I think it was stronger without but heck you can’t change the past!

I accidentally kept adding and adding to this painting without taking a second to take a step back. Sometimes you’re so excited about making a complicated and busy piece you don’t check to see if it’s necessary. I’m the end, I know a few leaves and flowers were a bit too much and that’s the main reason I added colour. I thought it would bett...
