Chapter 222 - Double Time

Laughter filled the air as Reivyn caught up with Teilon and Kimberly. He didn't leave Kefira out of the conversation, but she was just as interested in learning about her man's best friends, too. Teilon regaled them with tales of his exploits over the years, clawing his way up to an Epic Tier 4 Class as a kid who started off in the lowest of the low tier Regions.

The procession didn't normally officially stop for lunch, but Reivyn made an exception. They took the opportunity of mee...

Chapter 221 - Together Again

Reivyn stood to the side and watched the stream of Conscripts March by. Their ability to keep step and pace properly was much improved from when they had first arrived in the city, though Reivyn wasn't sure whether or not any of them had had the opportunity to unlock Forced March, yet. He wasn't planning to push them so hard that they would, either.

Only one of the mercenary platoons led the way in front. There was one platoon in the center and the remaining two were in the r...

Chapter 220 - Changing of the Guard

Prince Allik held his head in his hands. The faces of the deceased flashed through his mind over and over, one after another. The faces of the young Conscripts bore more heavily on his mind than those of the professional soldiers, though he felt a pang of sadness for all of them.

We had been too complacent, treating it like a game, almost, he sighed. This was a wake up call.

He sat in the silent darkness of his office for several more minute...

Chapter 219 - Follow the Rules

Reivyn jolted awake suddenly. Coming out of unconsciousness with his Divine Sense Skill wasn't the same as when he went to sleep and woke up properly. He had spent days trying to figure out how to shut his brain off enough to fall asleep in the deserts of Drallo, and it had been a couple of weeks until he had it reliably down. As he intended to go to sleep, his brain would slowly fade out the sensations he received from his Skill. Likewise, they would slowly fade in after he had a moment to w...

Chapter 218 - Round 2

Reivyn watched his men as as they formed up. The NCO's walked up and down the lines making sure everyone had all their gear and were prepared for the patrol. The officers and NCO's had everything in hand. They verified everyone had everything and moved on to touching up the camouflage over everyone's armor. Even though everyone had the Skill, the camouflage was hard to distinguish in the pre-dawn darkness on one's own.

"Nothing shiny, nothing bright," Reivyn could hear one of...

Chapter 217 - Plans

Sol'Ran leaned over the large map of the Region displayed before him. He was surrounded by the top brass of the local geographical area. The commanders of some of the other divisions as well as the commanders of the other war departments, like Logistics. The tent was large and accommodating, but he still felt a bit stifled with all the people present peering at the map.

The map wasn't some mundane contraption with ink on paper. It was a Mana-forged map created by a master Car...

Chapter 216 - More Questions

"Ahh," Teilon took a deep breath as he stepped out into the streets of Willowan for the first time.

Despite the cities being fairly dense population centers, there were no bad smells among the Tier 4 cities. Most of the Tier 3 cities and a few of the Tier 2 cities were like that as well.

"It smells so fresh and crisp," Teilon further commented.

"It's the ambient Mana," Gulley said, looking around the open square. His two companions followed c...

Chapter 215 - Interlude: Drawing Near

Kefira nodded her head as she fought to keep the polite smile on her face. She had been listening to these tails nonstop for almost the entire time she had been back. She resisted the urge to check her System clock to see how much more time remained before she could be free. She was counting down the days to when she could go back to Reivyn, but every second seemed like an eternity.

"And bam! I used my Mana to smash the kobold into the ground, tripping his companions up," Ory...

Chapter 214 - Perfect Foundation

Reivyn held one of the war hammers from a specialized squad in one hand and his sword in the other. He hefted them each, weighing them and feeling the difference between them. He swept out with the sword, paying attention to how it cut through the air and the whistling sound it created. He followed it up with an identical sweep with the war hammer. He noted the differences in how it moved through the atmosphere.

He continued to wave the weapons about, focusing his full attent...

Chapter 213 - Whetstone

Reivyn walked back and forth along the walls, inspecting the soldiers arrayed in front of him to repel the next attack from the invaders. Their attacks had been like clockwork, rain or shine. Every day, around noon, they would line up and assault the walls. They were always easily driven off, though, and it had become one of the daily routines of their lives.

Reivyn typically didn't participate at all. The Experience gains for the soldiers involved in the actual fighting was ...

Chapter 212 - Dark Truths

Reivyn swung his sword, attempting to identify that elusive feeling his father talked about. Refix had warned him that it had taken him years of training and additional inspiration when instructing Reivyn to gain the Weapons Master Skill to finally figure it out. There was a major difference between him and his father, though. Reivyn had already seen his father use the Transcendent ability, and Refix had been operating blindly. With a mentor to guide him, Reivyn was confident it wouldn't take...

Chapter 211 - Shadows of the Past

Reivyn stood to the side of the road as he watched the procession March past. They had been at the city he didn't even know the name of for a couple of months. The invaders hadn't attacked the city in force again, but they kept regular pressure on them. Every day, without fail, several enemy companies would assault the walls.

They didn't line up in endless ranks, and they didn't have dedicated Mage Corps launching an endless barrage of Spells at them, either. They formed up i...

Short Update

Been doing spring cleaning over the past couple days, so been a bit busy focused on that. In other news, got all my notes transferred to a new laptop, and I've been working on updating the notes vs what I've written without them. It's not writing, but it was needed work. Next chapter will be in the morning, and now that I have everything set up on my own laptop again, I can write more often without having to share, so I'll be working on cranking out more chapters to fill the 5 chapter/week go...

Chapter 209 - Interlude: Breath of the Realm

Tenrik breathed in deep, held it for several seconds, and expelled the breath across the sparse room. His powerful lungs created a visible wind-stream that broke apart upon striking the far room.

The room had no furnishings whatsoever. It was made of powerful, mana-enhanced bricks from a source of stone traded from one of the premiere Tier 8 Sects. Despite the plain appearance, the work put into and the source of the materials making up the room made it one of the most valuable places i...

Chapter 208 - Advancing in a Different Direction

The mood of the soldiers as they Marched along the road was much more upbeat than it had been before. Their Stamina and physical strength was much higher than it had been in the first leg. There had been zero casualties among the mercenary company. Despite how intense the fighting had been, they hadn't been engaged all that long, all things considered. The time they had spent in actual hand-to-hand combat had been pretty short, and most of the Spells had only caused damage, not fatalities. View Post

Chapter 207 - Battle at the Bridge

The sun had set long before the last remnants of the army stumbled across the bridge. In that time, Reivyn had employed some of the soldiers who had higher Skill Levels and experience with building fortifications to make their little fort sturdier. His mercenary company would one day be able to rival any regular army soldier in the ancillary tasks that came along with soldier life, but they had only been soldiers for several months as opposed to years of training.

The modifications to m...

Chapter 206 - Hurry Up and Wait

Reivyn Marched in front of the company setting the pace. He could see the first platoon perfectly clear with his Divine Sense, and for the first half of the March, he used their condition to gauge how hard to push them. Just the first platoon wasn't everyone, though, so he had the officers order the NCO's to closely monitor everyone and keep him apprised of how everyone was doing. He didn't want anyone falling out of the formation and left behind. He pushed them just as hard as he could to ge...

Chapter 205 - Leading the Charge

A/N My father in law passed about an hour after I published the last chapter, which is the reason for the delay. This is Friday's chapter.

Reivyn ran with the other three across the open plain. The rolling hills didn't start for some distance. The land was completely flat for about half a mile outside the city gates. Countless soldiers from all across the city were running across the open ground to reach the safety of the secondary defenses. More and more sol...

Chapter 204 - Sanguine Duel

A/N Thursday's Chapter. There will still be another chapter tonight. Sorry, I fell asleep on the couch and then woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible stomach ache. Gonna get the full 5 chapters out for this week, though.

Reivyn's grip on his sword tightened at his father's words. The giant man grinned fiercely at them as he stood ready to clash once more. He showed absolutely zero fear in being surrounded by four people.

Reivyn wasn't sure ...

Chapter 203 - Bloody Battle

Refix surveyed the fighting with a critical eye. Even with always training to the extreme to compensate for fighting while exhausted, there was only so much one could do. There was no way someone could maintain 100% effectiveness for hours on end. Even if everything was done perfectly to allow the troops to keep their Stamina above 90% the entire time, the mental toll was something that couldn't be completely circumvented.

Refix was noticing more and more mistakes being made by the sold...

Reivyn ran through the streets, picking up the pace from a simple jog as his blood pumped through his veins. He could feel and hear his heart pounding with the excitement and adrenaline coursing through him. He wasn't afraid for his life or anything, but something in his gut told him he needed to get back to his men.

My gut instincts are rarely wrong, Reivyn thought. It doesn't always manifest in the most obvious way, but that doesn't make it inaccurate. I might just be anx...

Chapter 201 - Spooky Action

A/N My father in law is still alive, but he's not well. He's in a stairstep downward spiral, and my wife has been taking it very hard. The hospice nurses say it will be any day, now. I have an obligation to you guys, though, so I have to put time away to work on the story. Someone has suggested to suspend charges for March, possibly April, and while I normally would agree to it, my wife and I are the only ones in our extended family in a position to pay for the funeral arrangements, a...

Chapter 200 - Hard Choices

A/N My father-in-law had suffered a severe seizure. The hospice nurse had originally thought that that was it. My wife has taken the past couple of days very hard. Luckily, my FIL shows signs of surviving the seizure. They succeeded in getting him to eat and take medicine yesterday, though he's still not doing well. He's only a little responsive, and he doesn't know who anybody is. There's still the worry that it's the last surge of energy before the end, but we're hopeful. View Post

Health Emergency

Sat down to work this morning, and got a message that my father-in-law had a seizure. He's not been doing well for a long time, and it could be significant. I don't want to jump the gun on how bad it is, but we think this might be it.

They live 20 minutes away, and we're going to go see them for a while. I don't know how long. The intention is to get 1-2 chapters out today and tomorrow, each.

I know I've been bad about getting chapters out and communicating about it. As of right n...

Chapter 199 - Urban Combat

Smoke and dust obscured their vision as the mercenary soldiers descended the wide steps from the top of the wall. Spells, arrows, and explosions continued to fly overhead in both directions. Sometimes their group-shield Skill would light up as it dispersed the energy of a stray strand of Mana striking them. Their group-shield Skill, however, only interfered with Mana, and more than one soldier stumbled as an errant arrow descended and struck them in the shoulder or other unarmored part of the...

Monday chapter delayed to today.

I don't know why, but there was some weird windows update on the new computer I'm temporarily using (it's primarily for my son's homeschooling), and it reset the PIN used to login. The problem is, it's set to my wife's email, and it has to be verified to reset the PIN, but she was super sick all last night (sicker than I've seen her in 10 years), and I didn't realize this had happened until after she had finally gone to sleep. There was no way I was going to wake her up after the night she ha...

Chapter 196 - Timing

Reivyn continued to work on his own personal improvement during his free time. He couldn't dedicate his time specifically toward building his Qi pool. He didn't let any of his Skills fall by the wayside.

That was only during his personal time, though. His duties throughout the day were mainly to make sure the mercenaries were always doing something productive. That didn't mean they were constantly training. Keeping morale up by allowing leisure and rest time was an important mission. Th...
