Fly Octo Fly ~ Ebb & Flow .ftm

About this track: I've never actually played Splatoon or Splatoon 2. In fact, I've never played quite a few games that I've covered recently. I don't even make an conscious effort to seek out video game soundtracks, but instead I just stumble across these by whatever means. Usually people share them on twitter or discord or something.

Oh, this is supposed to be about the track. umm. I like how it turned out. The instrument balancing is slightly off in some places, but I like what I did ...

Raceway .ftm

About the track: Ehh not crazy about how this turned out. I mean it's fine. I went for something closer to the Mario Kart 8 arrangement, but I think my version is a bit weak in the mixing department.

Ripple Star .ftm

Hooo this one was hard, but it turned out better than I expected. Some of the chords here were really hard to decipher, and I struggled with this more than trying to recreate the fast runs and percussion solos.

Reach for the Summit .ftm

If there's any 2A03 arrangement I'd like to retry in VRC6, it's this one. While it was a fun challenge to work within 2A03 limitations, I would have had a great time with the additional channels. This track just begs for two-channel reverb, and feels kinda dead without it. There are also so many variations of the original track that would have been cool to reference here. :(

Lower Brinstar/Red Soil .ftm

I like what I was trying to do with this one, but it came out sounding a little unpolished. Especially the arps...I feel like they're a bit jarring. Samus Returns motivated me to make this, seeing as it expanded upon the original lower brinstar theme from Super Metroid. I also tried to incorporate the Metroid Prime 2 version.

Fun fact: I was traveling in Japan while working on this, and did most of it on a long shinkansen ride.

Friend Star .ftm

At first I didn't really like this theme in Star Allies, but it grew on me. I get the feeling that others felt the same way but never grew to appreciate it. Idk, I just like the chord progressions a lot for some reason.

BTW I hate Famitracker sometimes. There's this annoying popping sound in the very beginning that is caused by the noise channel. In more recent works, I "activate" the noise channel before the tune plays, and artificially cut out the inevitable popping sound that s...

Your Name Please .ftm

Two things inspired me to make this. First, I had recently discovered a program called RJDMC made by RushJet1 that allows me to make dpcm samples. I wanted to have more fun with this program. Secondly, I recently listened to a Super Soul Bros arrangement of Your Name Please and remembered how good the original track is.

The dpcm chords work surprisingly well here lol

Vs. Hyness Unhooded .ftm

I got kinda carried away and increased Famitracker's engine speed for this one, thus making the vibratos jarringly fast. In retrospect, I don't know why I did this. Maybe I was caught up in how wacky this theme is.

Also the video for this kinda blew up in a way I wasn't expecting. Prior to this, my videos were getting an average of 3-5k views over long periods of time. This one took off and had probably somewhere around 100k views in one week. I'm alright with how this arrangement...

Bubblaine .ftm

This is one of my favorites from Super Mario Odyssey's soundtrack. I felt as though I didn't have much to offer by going the "faithful recreation" route with this arrangement, so I added some percussion and a bit of flair here and there. Looking back, the percussion is a little messy and I could have done a better job making the bass and percussion compliment each other. In retrospect, I probably could have had a much more creative approach when making this. Still, I think it turned out alrig...

Renai Circulation .ftm

LOL what possessed me to make this? I was looking for a song with rap(ish) lyrics to convert to dmc samples. I had just recently discovered RJDMC, a user-friendly program for creating and editing samples to use in the DPCM channel. The program is made by RushJet1, a guy who does some awesome stuff in famitracker.

I guess I made this for memes too, though they're outdated memes.

Redial .ftm

This is my first time revisiting an old cover and making it uhh...better. I think I succeeded! This tune is short and simple but still a bop. The entirety of Bomberman Hero's soundtrack is so otherworldly compared to most other VGM from that time, and I love it.

City of Tears .ftm

I once made a tweet about how I don't like to slap reverb on a track and call it "better", but I really like how this arrangement sounds with reverb. I think it sounds fine without it, but the strict limitations of 2A03 really make it difficult to capture the feel of the original piece. The reverb really gives it an distinct atmosphere. Can music have atmosphere? Does it convey or compliment atmosphere? idk
