After delaying it for months, we are finally talking about it, one of the most important film in South Korean cinema: Silenced (2011).
Writing about this film is difficult, partially because i's just a difficult film to watch. But also the film's message is strong and clear, so my analysis is limited. Everything I said feels like the film just said it openly.
And it is just difficult to talk about the subject matter at hand. No matter how many times I revisit this film, it still m...

Oh, the thumbnail got your attention, didn't it?
Yeah, that's how horror films are sold in Mainland China.
It's easy to cry "censorship bad". But it's another thing to really go in and understand how censorship works, and why it is the way it is. Today, let's put our judgement aside, and attempt to understand how censorship affects the film industry, and why it is there in the first place.

Halloween is coming. Will you be dressing up for the occasion?

Sorry everyone, no media talk this week. I'm currently very sick and simply in no condition to work. I'll be taking a few more days to recover. In the meantime, here is what's coming up next.
CHANNEL UPDATE
- With not enough time to look for and watch unfamiliar horror movies, I decided to do a special Halloween video: Let's talk about how and why Chinese horror movies in the 2010s are so absolute hot garbage across the board. Oh it's one of those videos.

It's October! Which means we are entering festival season, at least in North America, with Halloween, Thanks Giving, and eventually Christmas.
How about you? What does your culture celebrate in the winter?
CHANNEL UPDATE
- Due to an unexpected appearance of Halloween, which I can in no way predict or prepared for, I have to shift the schedule around to include a horror episode. But this is not just any old horror episode, it'll be one about Mainland Chinese horror movi...

Time to finish up our journey through the history of Gun Fu!
In truth, Gun Fu frequently lives in Hollywood mid to low-budget productions, which is a blessing and a curse. It's hard to say precisely which film contributed to continuous evolution, as these films all have limited impact. Still, it also means that Hollywood has the budget to constantly experiment and reinvent the form. In this video, while we appreciate the evolution of Gun Fu, let's also take some time to enjoy how almost...

Well, this is one hard video to make, partly because of it being an unpopular opinion, but also because it's just difficult having to dig into news about hate crimes, and having to edit them down so YouTube doesn't get angry.
In any case, I hope this video adequately explains my thought on the state of Asian Americans in North America. But this is just my opinion, so, let's talk more about it!

It's bullet time!
John Woo is a bit of a mockery today. His style is quite dated, and his sensibility is quite cheesy. His modern movies frequently bombs.
But once upon a time, John Woo was leading the industry by a mile, with his unique sensibility in violence and heroics. He was the man who invented Gun Fu, and he was the man who defined modern gunplay around the world. His artistic touch continues to affect other directors, from Tarantino, to Matthew Vaughn.
So, let's all...

Wow this video turned out way longer than I expected, and I had to cut out a lot of it, too. Sadly I wasn't able to go too in-depth with any of the references due to time constraint, otherwise I would've explained the plot of the novels, delve into each referenced movie a bit more.
Anyway, Kung Fu Hustle is one of those movies that aged amazingly well. It doesn't matter how many times I watched it, it stays fresh and fun. Hopefully this video helps make your future viewing experience be...

Hope you enjoyed our last video on Tony Leung! It was fun gushing about his acting, partly because Asian male actors are usually very overlooked in the west, as they are perceived as "less expressive", and partly because they are often desexualized. It's just fun to bring forth and example that counters both stereotypes at once, even though the comment section is... understandably thirsty haha.

Even within China, Tony Leung is mostly appreciated for his good looks. Sure, most people know him as an acting legend, but it's difficult to tell exactly what makes him so good. It's kinda crazy to think about, that his incredible talent is somehow outshined by his handsomeness.
For this video, let's go through his 40 years of acting, highlight a few films he starred in, and learn to appreciate his ever evolving, ever improving craft of on screen performance.

When Ang Lee made this movie, it's very likely that he wanted to attract an international audience through the mouth watering depictions of food. It certainly works. This is one of the most famous Taiwanese films to date. But it also kinda back fired, because conversations about the movie are almost always about food and less about its story theme: Family.
It's not particularly difficult to watch, but it's a very dense movie, with layers of hidden meanings that are hard to decipher, esp...

This is a long requested video. The only reason it took so long is because I have no knowledge of the film industry, all I can share is my first impressions.
I do have to say, the cinema of India is both world famous, and very much overlooked. So many great films were never talked about in the rest of the world, and so many other films were only remembered as memes. It's a shame. I hope this video does the medium justice.

Brought to you by the folks who made White Snake, New Gods: Nezha Reborn is another visually stunning animation from China. It combines Chinese mythology with steampunk inspired aesthetic and anime style action sequences. It sounds like a disastrous mishmash of styles, something that China isn't a stranger to. But somehow, it managed to impress pretty much everyone with its visual.
What did it do so right?
