“Leave your personal weapon here, ensign,” the major ordered.
According to her personnel file, she had survived three full tours on the Scuu front before being transferred to a desk job. Officially, it was presented as a promotion. In truth, there were allegations of Scuu artifact smuggling. Due to the high number of casualties in that section of space, nothing had been proven, ...

Viskar sat on the golden throne, admiring the mountain of treasure in front of him. The value of the raw materials alone was more than the average count could amass in a lifetime. If the history and artisanal value was taken into consideration, the haul was fit for a king. And the best part of all—this was only the beginning. In a matter of years, the treasures would double, then triple.
As deputy leader of the Claw Hook gang, Viskar owned a quarter of everything in front of his eyes....

“They’re regrouping,” Ulf said, leaning on his sword. “That gives us a few minutes before the next charge.”
Half the people on the front lines sat down to get what could pass as a rest. It was a terrible decision from a strategic point of view, but at this point it no longer mattered. After hours of fighting and the number of losses they’d suffered, it was looking like the next large charge would be the last; or if not, the one after that.
Everyone had celebrated the r...

Mornings always started with griffins. As every bird they rose at first light, letting out a loud screech, then leaving their nest to soar in the skies of Rosewind in search of food. Some of them—mostly the younger ones—had acquired the annoying quality of begging the townspeople for food. Many enjoyed that, petting the majestic creatures, feeding them, even giving them names. That was not the case for Baron Theodor d’Argent, however.
The whole of Rosewind knew the baron, as a cha...

I can’t sense him, Gleam said, fluttering close to the crack in the ceiling. Doesn’t mean he’s not there.
“He’s there.” Dallion lay on the floor, the dartblade on his left leg surrounded in blue flames. “He’s just waiting.”
Several hours had passed since the encounter, although given the results describing it as a disaster would be more accurate. The shardfly felt stronger than anything Dallion had faced, save for the dragon. It had focused sole...

Having a team of twelve highly skilled warriors was supposed to be a huge advantage. All of them were battle-hardened, with suitable weapons and a deep desire to destroy Lord Mandrake. By every metric, they were supposed to give Theo a vast advantage over his opponent. However, there was one small detail that had eluded the dungeon’s attention: they were only human. That meant that unlike Theo’s avatar, they didn’t have the luxury of being hit by a torrent of demonic flames or a massive...

“It’s only fair,” the Star said. “You cost me a skill gem, so you’ll help me get a replacement. Herbology would have been better, but I’ll settle for spellcraft.” He laughed.
Droplets of sweat formed on Dallion’s forehead. Whatever the trick the Star had pulled off, it had instantly removed all of Dallion’s advantages. All of his familiars and echoes were frozen, his combat splitting had been rendered useless, and none of his weapons could be drawn. Dallion had discret...

Back on Earth it was said that hindsight was twenty-twenty. In this world the phrase went “a trick is obvious once uncovered.” Of course a countess wouldn’t go against an Archduke unless she had serious backing. Dallion just never expected the backing to come from the Academy. On the other hand, given the number of mage visits as well as the establishment of an Academy village in Countess Priscord’s lands, one could guess she was getting something in return.
If Havoc was to be b...

Fighting bladerers, even with two people, was more difficult than it seemed. It wasn’t that they were stronger than Dallion; at his current level he could easily defeat each of them one-on-one. It was their persistence that was perilous dragging people down bit by bit. Bladeres didn’t tire, they were capable of great destruction, and half the blades of the ones that were destroyed went to the ones that weren’t. Thankfully, it didn’t seem they had the ability to merge together.

Dozens of buildings were scattered throughout the mountain peak, carved into the cliff itself. The architecture style reminded of Linatol, only with a few more Roman elements. Half of them were open, with walls of air stretching between thick columns of granite. The perfect weather in the realm made it more convenient, allowing a person to take advantage of a breathtaking view of peaks, skies, and clouds. If Dallion didn’t know better, he’d say that this realm was created by a fury. So mu...

“Who are you?” the metalin asked, its voice sounded unnaturally deep, as if talking through a tuba.
“What’s it matter?” Dallion asked, filling his voice with notions of confusion and recklessness. To no surprise, no connection was achieved. The tendrils of music bounced off the metalin as if it were made of nothing.
“You aren’t permitted to remove the restrictions.”
Dallion’s response was to burst into instances, then strike at different parts of his enemy....

The inside of Havoc’s home was in stark contrast with its outside. Not only was everything mended to perfection, but the man had done quite a few improvements as well. If Dallion didn’t know better, he’d almost say that he was in a rather well-kept inn in some small town.
“Here.” The large man tossed him a glass flask with some clear liquid inside. “I made it myself.”
The strong smell of alcohol quickly told Dallion that it wasn’t something he wanted to sample.

Damn blocker items. Dallion leaped out of his room onto the roof.
The constant background of voices was gone, making Dallion feel completely alone. Unlike Eury he never liked using blocker items. The experience had only gotten worse the more his empathy trait had increased. It was the same as being in a crowd, yet not seeing or hearing anyone around.
Moments after Dallion left, the windows swung back, closing behind him. He had already discussed the matter with the window...

Ice blades flew and aether firebombs flew through the chamber, aimed at both sides of Lord Mandrake's golem. Theo knew from his previous life that subjecting an object to a large temperature contrast was supposed to do bad things to the object. He’d also heard the same from one of the local blacksmiths. The man had the annoying habit of explaining it over and over to his apprentices among all the other thirty-three rules of blacksmithing.
Explosions followed. The entire right side was...

Being the countess’ hunter was a strange experience. In some ways it was like being the Hero of Nerosal all over again, only a lot better. People would instantly recognize Dallion, always being polite and offering him gifts and huge discounts. But just as everyone was doing their best to act this way, Dallion could sense the fear emanating from them. It was as if he had transformed into a noble. The most disturbing thing of all—it wasn’t only people who were scared of him, but area guar...

“Welcome, hunter!” The guards stood to attention as Dallion approached Nerosal’s main gate. “The countess wishes to see you.”
That was fast, Dallion thought.
The news of his mission had spread throughout the city. The Countess had made sure of that and now wanted to have a word with her hunter.
“Do I have time to wash?” Dallion asked.
The soldier didn’t respond, but the emotions streaming from him suggested that was a bad idea. In the end, Dall...

Another hit went through Dallion’s defenses, despite his instances, piercing his left shoulder. A few strikes ago the damage was low enough for Lux to compensate, though that had quickly changed. With every second the trial echo was improving, targeting multiple spots simultaneously. Dallion had faced an all-out attacker, focusing on the body trait. Compared to his current challenge, tha...

It didn’t take long for the noble to fly off. The kid could barely hide his enthusiasm seeing a dragon in this day and age was an extraordinary event far greater than having a wyvern pet. However, he couldn’t even realize the significance of what he had just seen. The count, his father, though had probably gotten a pretty good picture thanks to the exchanged echoes. That was probably one of the greatest advantages nobles had in the world—nobles had the practice of swapping echoes within...

Pain emerged in Dallion’s left elbow, quickly spreading to the rest of his arm. It seemed that he hadn’t managed to fully evade the full extent of the point attack after all.
Lux, where are you? Dallion asked.
Sorry, boss, the firebird chirped. The hit threw me back to the entrance.
You alright? Dallion pushed through his own pain. Awakening helped with ignoring it, but even it couldn’t remove it altogether.
A bit dazed. I...

Earl Rosewind paced throughout the room. Ever since his father had passed away, he had been the one overseeing the town, nudging it forward to what it had become today. Few of the people alive now remembered that two generations ago Rosewind was nothing more than a measly hamlet in the middle of nowhere. The only thing of significance was the noble’s castle, though even that had been dubbed Rosewind’s Folly. There was a single tavern, which doubled as an inn, a small temple, and blacksmit...

It took half an hour for Dallion to find the entrance to the ruins. The lack of wyverns in the immediate area made discovering it a bit more challenging. The infants that had served as direction markers so far had flown out days ago, leaving the strong ones safely below.
According to Eury’s guardians, the really tough ones were still in the ruins, keeping the gorgon and her client trapped for over a week. Apparently, the count’s son had stirred up the first batch of eggs, without ex...

Wyverns poured up into the sky like water, all erupting from a hole in the ground. The creatures swirled round, clearing a swarm that could be seen and heard for thousands of miles. None of them were particularly pleased with the surroundings they were given, while simultaneously uncertain in which direction to go. The only thing certain was that they were territorial enough to attack anything they considered infringing in their territory, especially creatures that were in the sky, such as dr...

Returning to the real world after a battle never was easy. Even with extreme concentration, Dallion felt the shift like a wave going through him. The most difficult thing was the look in the eyes. Shifting reality always made a person’s pupils change slightly. Experienced awakened had the knowledge and perception to notice such a subtle change. The only way to hide it was through extreme concentration. Strictly speaking, there was another approach, though it was a lot less dignified.

Another millipage segment fell off, only to be devoured by Nox. The panther had an elegant way of going about things. Its teeth never touched a single page of the guardian, nor did it even claw on them. Instead, it would burst into half a dozen kitten forms of itself, each kneading into various parts of the creature. Cracks could cut in from multiple parts, quickly reducing the guardian into a ball of confetti. Then, after the creature had completely crumbled to bits, Nox would reassemble aga...
