People liked to say that they wanted to go out in a blaze of glory. In truth, even the few that really meant it couldn’t. That was a privilege reserved for ships.
I had seen millions of ships burst in flames, some flashing so bright that they blotted out the stars from my sensors. In one instance, I had seen an entire planet explode in a star system, destroying thousands and crippling even more. It was me who had triggered that event, and it was starting to look like I might do the sa...

System XN133-H, Cassandrian Space 625.3 A.E. (Age of Exploration)
Cassandrians had a simple strategy when facing the Fleet—they would appear in force, endure our salvos until we ran out of missiles, then launch volleys of their own followed by swarms of fighters. More often than not, they would call for reinforcements, which was the reason why the Fleet resorted to sacrificial missions. The strategy core clusters soon found that the presence of a massive gathering ...

“That’s all we have time for,” the Paladin transmitted. “My apologies for the segment not being longer.”
“I understand.” Given my present circumstances, I had to be glad I got even this. “We’ll talk again when I return to the surface. Hopefully, I’ll have made my decision by then.”
“Based on my simulations, you have already made your decision. I don’t know why you hesitate telling me.”
“Maybe because I’m still not sure.” I replied. “Maybe ...

The second shuttle left my hull on schedule. My captain was in no condition to follow the process from the bridge, so he did so from his quarters. I had six med bots transfer all necessary equipment from the med bay there in case of emergency. Since there weren’t any other humans aboard, there was no reason not to do so. Given that the health of the captain was in potential danger, I could bypass som...

Dallion couldn’t stop thinking of the shardfly’s last moments. It was easy to wave the sensation away as a momentary low. After all, he had felt the same when Nox and Lux had originally faded out of existence. This should be no different… and yet the intensity of sadness was multitudes stronger. Maybe it was because the guardian could speak, unlike Dallion’s previous familiars. That sounded like a logical reason, though as much as he tried to rationalize it away, Dallion felt that the...

Sixty percent of the Cassandrian ships had returned to their points of origin. The remaining twenty percent remained in orbit around the planet that was the target of attack. There were no attempts to track or attack me. It was as if nothing had happened. Once one of the three prisms had been destroyed—along with the shuttle and crew carrying it—everything had gone back to the way it had been at ou...

SPHERE ITEM AWAKENING
A forest surrounded Dallion. In several ways, it was similar to the one in his last visit, however, there were a few subtle and not-so-subtle differences. For starters, all the tigerpines were gone. Dallion could sense a few creatures in the vegetation, but they did their best to keep away from him, likely aware of the level difference. Another difference was that the frees themselves had changed into a weird hybrid of pine trees with ma...

“What’s your world like?” Eury asked as they lay in the bed at the first rays of dawn.
This was the first time Dallion had been asked. It wasn’t a question he expected ever hearing, making him think back to so many things he took for granted. Back then, he had spent a large part of his life imagining fantasy worlds that didn’t exist, playing games online to create the illusion of being there. Now he was here—a world in which people could do the impossible.
“It’s di...

“You came just for this?” The fury asked, sitting across Dallion. “I had higher hopes, since you passed through the gate.”
“Does it matter? As long as I can pay, I can have anything. That’s what you told me during the last visit.”
“A fool and his money are quickly parted.” The fury tilted her head to the side, then made a sign to one of the waiters. The man nodded and quickly rushed to the staircase. “Maybe I can convince you to go through another gauntlet? You...

Battleships hated scouting work. It was unnatural and inefficient. The Fleet had probes for that, but often they would repurpose a ship instead. Even after all this time on the front, it still felt uncomfortable—being trained and designed for combat in any circumstances, but restricted by the mission. The best I could do was run simulations on how much damage I could inflict as I slowly drifted towar...

Hello, all!
I'm working on starting a new casual story in a few weeks.
The story will be a daily that is casual and highly experimental (I cannot define the genre. It will have fantasy, science fiction, drama and slice of life elements).
The big question would be whether you'll be fine with having a second story appearing daily in your mailbox, or would you prefer I create some new tiers so people could opt in at will (this will take some time for me to figure ou...

The surface teams had assured us that they’d be able to drill their way to us in twenty-three hours. Two days had passed since then. Progress was slow and, at times, completely nonexistent. Sometimes the drilling team would just stop without explanation, only to resume work two hours later. In such circumstances, it was normal that morale would drop. At present, it had reached the point where soldiers no longer cared that anything they said would impact their future career. For the most par...

In war, death was often sudden. And so were enemy attacks.
I drew my sidearm and fired five shots at the approaching enemy. It was slightly smaller than I expected, but without a doubt Cassandrian. The creature seemed to have appeared from nowhere, jumping down from the ceiling seconds after I had entered the chamber. That didn’t come as a particular surprise—with all the unrestricted memories of Cassandrians I had, it was easy to be prepared for such an eventuality. The unexpected ...

Humans were inefficient. This wasn’t an insult; it was pure fact. Their perception was limited, their reaction speed was slow, and they kept second-guessing everything they did. After years of observing them, I had accepted their limitations and adjusted my expectations for simulation purposes. Now that I was the one leading a team through the tunnels of Cassandrian hive, I found that I was only marginally better. My organic body had negated a lot of my battleship capabilities, increasing t...

During my time in the Fleet, I had faced millions of Cassandrian Battleships. I had fought off fighter attacks, bombarded their troops from orbit, and on a few occasions I had even helped fight off enemy breaches. And still, this was the first time I would get to fight a Cassandrian in person at close range. As I watched spores form in the air bubble, dozens of simulations ran through my mind, displaying the most effective methods against all the subspecies of Cassandrians I had in my databas...

The probability of a random event occurring at a specific time was greater than people thought, but less than they expected. Theoretically, it was possible that the explosion was a side effect of the disturbance in the hive structure, but I put the odds of that at a fraction of a percent. The others likely were of the same opinion, for they remained speechless for several seconds.
Just like re-switching, I thought.
For some reason, it took humans a certain amount of time ...

Few things in the universe remained exactly the same. Fractal space was one of them. Not only was the white infinity identical to the ones before, but so were my sensations. I found myself thinking the same thoughts, asking the same questions, even after all the revelations that had taken place in-between. I felt as if I were a kitten that had managed to claw its way out of a box of secrecy, only to find myself in a universe so vast that all my previous concerns weren’t even a minuscule par...

During my time on Resha Colony, the arrival of important dignitaries was always accompanied by massive fanfare. Even the arrival of low level, off-planet bureaucrats was enough to cause a stir. The entire event was broadcasted at instant speed, capturing every moment of the visit. On one of those occasions, the local council had deemed it necessary that I join in the event—being that I was the only battleship on the planet and the most notable veteran present. A few hours later, I was discr...
