Eric Janicki / Throwback Doodle (Preview)

I made this portrait of Bodybuilder and model Eric Janicki back in January 2017, it was the most difficult and most time consuming one yet... I developed a lot of techniques that I currently use on portraits, and I think it still looks great!

I'll be posting all the files next Tuesday, I need to find them all and my hard drive is a mess lol 😅🤣🤣

The idea was to make his dick soft but heavy looking, kinda like when you first whip it out of the jockstrap and it stills semi-hard, a full erection was a bit to aggressive and with that look in his eyes it has to be more of a tender moment... Or maybe I'm reading too much into it 😂😂😂

I wanted to make this piece sexy and heroic, so I combined the Baroque ornaments with the shields and eagle motives, all in a classic Art-Nouveu structure... This pose reminds me of a Michael Angelo sculpture, kind of erotic but classy lol 😅

Captain Rogers / The Background EPS

Captain Rogers/The Background

For this I used some classic elements from my favorite style (art-nouveau) and added the captain's shield and some american symbols and color scheme... Also, the brocade effect takes it a little closer to art sacro so I added the halo in the end to accentuate that vibe. 

Coloring The Captain's Hair

I like to have the beard and hair in a separate layer so I can color them together and have a clean transition, the beard is always going to be a little lighter so I use some color samples from the skin on some key areas, like the cheeks and around the mouth... At the very end I add some extra shine for that expensive looking, celebrity hair.

Coloring Captain Rogers (The Highlights)

The shiniest part of the face is always the nose and a spot on the forehead, so that's usually my first step and I work from there to the rest of the face and then to the body... Also I use two almost identical shades for the highlights, one is more saturated and vibrant, and other that's more gray and muted to simulate light reflection from the skin.

Coloring Captain Rogers (The Neck)

When there's a a hard shadow in the body, I like to block that first and blend it later... If I start building up the color slowly like on the rest of the skin, it lacks depth and looks off.

Painting Captain Rogers (The Shading)

This time I started with the nose... is the hardest part on Chris' face, the I build up the shadows around it, it looks a little ashy at first, but I'll warm it up later. Also having the beard in a separate layer was super useful to divide the face in smaller, easier to tackle portions.

Everyone loved the Captain America commissions so much that I decided to make one for Patreon! this is my 3rd time drawing this handsome man and I have to tell you, it doesn't get easier... but I think he came out pretty good!

4 years ago I used to like thicker lines, I was still learning some techniques that I've mastered since, so it's a little rough...

From time to time I like to go back to the stronger lines, and then slowly they get thinner and finer again.

Rob Kreider (Throwback Doodle!)

Made in 2016, this portrait was the first attempt of the "halftone beard" I was trying to find an easy and quick way to make stubble. I think it looks good but I don't really use it anymore, Back in the day I was still enjoying that synthetic, digital art look... now days I go for an organic feel.

There are some obvious anatomy issues and I didn't spend that much time in the background, but at the time I was very proud of this and I learned a lot making it.

All the variations lined up, it was a lot of time getting all this done, specially with that intricate suit design, but I'm pleased for now lol.

Figurine 014 Stages.

The first one is without lines, very soft and painterly. The second one is right before the highlights, and the 3rd is fully rendered.

I really like this utilitarian take on the Bat-suit, my favorite of the entire franchise, followed by the all black "anatomically correct" suit from Batman Forever.

This file helped me to organize the elements in my mind before adding all the color and FX.

I have to admit this wasn't my favorite drawing to ink lol, just the suit took so long, but I think it was worth it in the end... The bat ornaments in the frame are inspired by "Camazotz" the Zapotech Bat God  of destruction and decay. 🦇🦇🦇

The challenge here is to not over do it, is easy to get carried away when adding shine to the muscles.
