New Video In Progress

Hey, everyone!

I'm excited about the new video, which is currently in its scripting/research phase, which could last another week or so. Lots to familiarize myself with in this one, as it covers a couple different industries which I'll need to become more knowledgable about. It's a long(ish) saga--spanning almost two decades, from the late-1980s to the mid-2000s. The video itself will likely not be as long as Phoenix Jones, but longer than the usual 20 minutes. Hard to say just yet. Like Nasubi, there's been a fair amount of exposure to this topic in its home country but not much in the United States, although some of you may have heard of it. 

That's all I can report now without spoilers. It's a strange, often sad but occasionally humorous story, and I'm having a lot of fun piecing the narrative together. Whenever it's nearer to completion, you all will be the first to know.

Progress Report 4/5/20

Hey everyone, 

Just wanted to give everyone a quick update on what's going on with Atrocity Guide! The next video is in its very early stages of production: a topic has been chosen, I'm immersing myself in research, and beginning to conceptualize a script. Too early for any sort of release window, but it's safe to say the turnaround will not be as lengthy as this most recent wait time.  Speaking of which, thank you all again for your patience. I had a lot of fun tackling such a large project, but I'll be saving the next long-form video for a later date. This next one will be a shorter story, one I hope to have out within my normal upload schedule.

The Phoenix Jones video is performing well and being well-received. Dark Guardian, one of the superheroes mentioned in the documentary, re-tweeted the video which I thought was great.  Unfortunately, the video posted in the last update is no longer active, as it was denied monetization by YouTube, so I had to make a slightly different version and re-submit it. Apologies to anyone who has clicked on that link since publication to be met with an error message. 

I enjoyed sharing an early release with you all, and I think maybe that's something we can do going forward, during the day or two process of submitting for monetization. Let me know if that sounds good to you all!

Early Release for Patrons!

Hello everyone!

As I mentioned in Discord a few days ago, the video has been finished for a bit. The issue I'm running into is the review for monetization. But I see no reason to keep you all waiting while this delayed process completes, so please enjoy this unlisted video before it's released to the public! 

For those of you who are curious, here's a rundown of what's going on:

When a video is uploaded with the intent of being monetized, Youtube's algorithm runs an AI-driven check for advertising suitability. Most of my videos do not pass this initial check, this one included; however, creators can request a human review to check it again. Usually, this passes, unless there's something especially controversial in it, like the Nasubi or Caro videos. I realize the violence, drugs, and strong language in this video may cause it to fall into that latter category, but it's very much worth the try. I've definitely seen more controversial content slip through the cracks. 

Human review has typically taken anywhere from 12-24 hours, but due to the pandemic, Youtube has announced their human staff has been significantly reduced. It's been several days and a human has yet to review it, and I'm not sure if/when one will. It's frustrating but I've decided to wait it out a little longer.

Video Finished!

Hey, everyone!

So it's been a long road but I'm happy to announce the video has been completed--at least in its first draft form. I'm going to let a trusted friend or two beta watch and give feedback, and if necessary, some minor revisions may happen. 

Beyond that, I'll be submitting the video for monetization, which may take a few tries. As some of you are no doubt aware, due to the pandemic, Youtube manual review has been either suspended or drastically reduced, so we'll likely be relying  on their automated system to check for advertising suitability, which can often have questionable logic. Not great news, but hopefully it won't be a huge obstacle!

Keep an eye out for it over the next few days, and then we'll talk about what's next!

Video Update 2/27/20

Hello Friends!

I'm happy to report progress is good on the new video, and I'm very proud of how it's coming along. Once again, I can't thank you enough for your patience with this one--I know this turnaround is long, even for me! 

I'd like to go ahead and give a tentative release window of early-mid March. Ryan Probert and I have fallen into a steady rhythm of editing and scoring each section, and we are making progress every single day. There are ten total sections, each around 5 minutes long, and at our current rate, we're completing 1-2 sections per week. His music is amazing, by the way, as I'm confident you all will agree. 

I'm excited to get this released to you all, and to talk about some of the projects I have coming after which will fall back into a more consistent upload schedule. I've enjoyed this long, complex project, but I think I'd like to find my footing once again with a 3-4 week turnaround before embarking on any more projects of this magnitude is wise for my channel at this point in time.

A Super Vague Video Update!

Hey, everyone!

Wanted to update you all about the next video, since it's been a minute. So, this story has gotten a bit more complex in the last few days, and components are very much still in motion. Something happened that reframes everything that came before it. Some twists and turns are definitely in store.

This means a minor set-back for me, but I do think will result in a story with more depth. Although it's not the most flattering of developments for the character, it almost makes sense in a sad, strange way. 

Thank you guys for sticking with me during my longest upload turn-around. At times I've felt like I've bitten off more than I can chew with this one, but I always want to keep raising the bar with each video, which means challenging myself. I really appreciate the support you guys show me.

Progress Update!

Hey, everyone!

Just wanted to keep you in the loop about the next video. Progress is being made daily in the writing/planning/research front. This will undoubtedly be a long video, perhaps my longest to date. It's a complicated saga, lots of resources (video, images, interviews, articles) that I'm parsing through, figuring out how to incorporate. The nature of the story requires a lot of thoroughness and due diligence on my part. Spanning 4 years, with a "where are they now" portion at the end, and occasionally zooming in and looking at the series of events on the week-to-week level, this is probably my most ambitious project yet. I'm nervous and excited to test myself with this one. 

As a little teaser: this one is modern-day, and the Internet does come into play heavily but most interesting developments take place in tangible reality. It is not an ARG or anything or the sort (although if it were, it would be the coolest). And I've really learned a lot about martial arts during my research.

As you'll remember me mentioning in my last update, I do plan to start commissioning original music, which I think will really elevate the channel. Having said that, I want to be realistic with you; it could be a bit longer in between releases, as this adds another time-consuming step in the process. I'm planning to start punctuating some of these longer projects with much shorter mini-sagas that maybe last only 5-10 minutes, although I'm still deciding whether these will appear on the main channel or a new, secondary channel. Let me know your opinions on that. But as of now, I'm 100% focused on the next main video.

Happy Holidays!

Hey everyone, 

Next video is still very much in the conceptual stages, but I have some exciting news. I've been speaking with a composer--someone recommended to me by a trusted fellow YTer, and I'm aiming to begin having original scores. In the past/present I've used stock music from the Youtube creator library, and I'm sure some of you are noticing repeats. Because there are maybe 20 total songs which I feel fit the tone of the channel, and I want each video to be very much its own story and to carry its own unique mood, I've concluded custom music is completely necessary. And I'm very grateful to you guys for allowing me to grow the channel in such exciting ways. 

In addition to custom music, 2020 will very likely see more outsider artists, character studies, more real-world sagas, with an occasional experimental piece that might seem like a departure thrown in. I have an ever-growing list of topics. For the time being, I think we're all feeling the fatigue of ARG coverage, so I'm planning a bit of a break from those, only covering those that truly stand out in an exciting way. 

I really appreciate the feedback you all give me on every video, and I'm definitely using it to guide the channel in ways I think we'd all like to see it go. Anyway, thank you for an amazing 2019.

Next Video Update!

Hey, guys. As some of you will remember me saying in Discord earlier, new video is well underway. 

I'm having a lot of fun making this one for a few reasons. It's more historic, rather than age-of-Internet, which is always interesting because you can point to the ripple effects of it across the following years/decades. Secondly, it's a character study, which are always a joy to make. And lastly, its strangeness isn't something I would describe as "horror"--it actually evokes feelings that are difficult to articulate. 

Anyway, I'm really excited to keep working on it, and I hope to share it with you guys in a couple weeks.

Really grateful for your patience with this one. My first full collaboration in the truest sense of the word. It was a lot of fun, and I'm excited to get back to regular content. 

As I mentioned before in Discord, I'm planning a spiritual successor to Nasubi in the not-too-distant future. I've known for a while that gameshow did other, equally bizarre reality shows, but have wanted to wait awhile before covering them. It'll depend on access to footage, granted, but I'm hopeful this is a feasible project.

Halloween Special!

Hey everyone!

So as I mentioned in my last update, there are several things in the pipeline for the rest of the year, but the most impending is my Halloween special. Clocking in at around 40 minutes, it will be my longest video to date, and easily more in-depth than any other story I've covered. Covering this Internet mystery, I will be joined by another Youtuber in the analytical horror genre who helped co-write and produce this piece. It's a bit experimental on our parts, as most collaborations consist of guest narration and nothing else, but this has been a collaborative effort on the creative scale that we've been working on for months. Revealing any more would be at the risk of spoiling the fun.

After this brief departure from the norm, I will be back to covering the odd characters of the Internet, alternate reality games, and all around bizarre goings-on that take place in the digital world, resuming in early to mid-November.

Official announcement will be featured at the end of an upcoming video, but I wanted to tell you guys first :D 

In other news, the script is finished for a very special Halloween release that I have planned on the 31st of next month. It'll be a slight departure from the norm, as I've been collaborating with another creator (no spoilers) in all aspects of the process--research, script writing, etc. I'll be recording and editing that over the next few weeks. And I also believe I've settled on a topic for the next saga I want to cover, so research and script outlining for that will also be coinciding with work on the Halloween special. I'll keep you guys updated on the progress of that in the coming weeks. :)

Just a quick update--script for next video is in the early stages. This is a topic I've had on my list for a while, and the time feels right. It'll be part saga, part character study centered around an individual who reached mild internet celebrity status many years ago, and one that I doubt too many have heard of (could be wrong). I'm also working simultaneously on some upcoming collabs with some great creators, for both my channel and theirs. I can't wait to share it all with you. As always, thank you for being here!

Almost Finished!

First draft of the new video is complete! Now it's time for notes, detail edits, (hopefully no major revisions), and then the final draft. So keep an eye out, it'll be here within 2 or 3 days! :D

Update 7/21/19

Hey, everyone! 

Just wanted to drop in, extend a welcome and thank you to all of the new supporters who have joined recently, and provide a brief update as to the progress of the next video. 

The script is just now nearing completion (I always tend to underestimate how long these videos will take to write!). This topic is a bit complicated, and requires coverage of a few different internet stories which all coalesce into one at the end.

I've been corresponding with some individuals who participated in this particular internet saga (no spoilers!) and I'm very happy with how it's turning out. I'm hoping to have it released somewhere near the end of this month, or very early next month.

Update + Seeking Your Input

Hey, everyone! Thank you for being here, and I just wanted to check in and let you guys know what's happening with Atrocity Guide!

Next video has entered into the research/writing phase, albeit still in the very early stage. This saga is very Internet-heavy unlike my last one, but still no less a saga, and one that I find fascinating and hope you will too! I've also begun work on a collaboration with another creator for a video we'll be tackling together (a VERY interesting topic we're both excited about), but that's a few months down the road still ;) I'll also be making some appearances on a few other channels in the near future, which should be a lot of fun. 

Anyway, I have a question for you. 

In my topic research, I often encounter stories that I find very strong and would love to cover, but don't necessarily lend themselves to full-length videos. I'm wondering what you guys would think about an ongoing series of "mini-sagas" that would act as a sort of compilation. I'm thinking each of these episodes would feature 3-4 of these types of stories, each taking about 5 or so minutes to cover before moving to the next, making the videos themselves around 15-20 minutes long. They would only be occasional uploads and would not replace the normal full-length sagas. I'm sure you've seen other channels do compilations such as this, so I won't over-explain. How would you feel about Atrocity Guide having our own such series?

Sorry I've been off the map for a bit, but I've been focusing on the next video. It's been a blast to make, although it's been one of the more extensive and time-consuming topics I've covered, but that's okay, I love doing deep dives. :)
