Zeyaelid steps in Fyre’s direction. “I’ll take care of this one. The rest aren’t too much for you to handle, are they?”
Mura Tal grits his teeth. “No.”
We reach out to Fyre.
[K̶a̵n̷i̶n̸: what are you doing]
[Fyre: Protecting my people. Get Dizzi back to the Fortress. I can handle the champion.]
[K̶a̵n̷i̶n̸: did you check her level]
[Fyre: Yes, in fact, I know what I am getting myself into. Now get the others out of here.]
But w...

“Who are you?” Mura Tal demands. He narrows his eyes at one of our wrists, which he has pinned against the stone wall behind us. He’s strong.
We’re not going to dignify that with a response—not that we particularly like speaking like this, anyway. Instead, we focus on our core. We need to get it out from underneath Mura Tal’s blade. Beneath our coat, the void begins to subtly move.
“An illusion?” Mura Tal realizes. His hand appears to be clipped through our wrist l...

I freeze, my mind stumbling over the word “Hide” a dozen times before it finally clicks. Then we’re in crisis mode.
We snap a limb out around Dizzi’s waist, and she squeaks in surprise. Grabbing our core, we stuff it back in our chest and leap for doors of the nearest ruin, pulling Dizzi along with us.
“Kanin?” she cries, digging her claws into our void. Her voice is tight with fear.
We release her inside the building, and she goes sprawling across the f...

“We’ve got five days, tops. Probably four,” I tell Dizzi that night.
“Less time to check our work than I would like,” the harpy says, fluttering her way around different angles of the giant spell circle we’ve drawn over the stone. “But I think we can manage it. The design is complete; the only limiting factor is storing enough mana for the spell. Although we should probably double-check that there are no mistakes in the circle before we rip a hole in reality.”
“U...

Noli is still a ways down the street, but her face is lit up with that familiar, bubbly happiness. She’s walking my way, which will take an awkwardly long stretch of time to reach me, and she seems to realize this, too, as she soon breaks into a jog.
Ink balloons with delight at the sight of her. Part of our pack has returned! Quick, we must greet her—
I’m not sure it even realizes what it’s suggesting, but I’m in complete agreement. I open my arms, and she soon collides...

It feels weird to go about life without Zyneth around, but the Fyrethians find plenty to do to keep me busy.
When Fyre learns all of my body is made of Attuned glass, she manufactures some more for me to add to my collection, seeming to conjure it out of thin air. Apparently, her remnant, The Dungeon Core, is responsible, able to alter the state of the matter it’s previously consumed. Creepy, but also extraordinarily useful. When I have time to myself, I Attune it and then begin to et...

The days start to pass in a steady rhythm. Each night, Dizzi and I meet back up in the Ruins to go over my spell circle design and Dizzi’s plan for converting the storm arcana into null arcana. Mirzayael and Fyre can’t always meet with us during the day, as they have their own duties to attend to, so Zyneth and I find ways to pass the time. Fyre gives me access to the small library she’s beginning to curate, and when Dizzi is awake (which isn’t often anymore, given our covert nightly ...

When I can, I study the mental map Shirasil gave me of The Sanctum. As far as I can judge, it’s about the size of a football field, which makes me skeptical this is a map of all of the Heavens. I guess he only gave me what he thought I’d need access to—probably safer that way. Not that I was intending to go snooping around elsewhere… Okay, actually, that’s not true, I’m at least intending to investigate where the Travelers are being kept.
Since I’ll be em...

I watch with trepidation as Zyneth and Mirzayael draw their weapons. I don’t think either of them will actually kill each other, but I do worry one or both will end up hurt. I’m not exactly sure what kind of beef has developed between them, except that each clearly wants to prove they’re more competent than the other.
“It’s protectiveness,” Fyre says, hearing my thoughts. “They both see each other as our guardians.” There’s a hint of amuse...

It takes longer than I would have liked to speak with Fyre about Shirasil’s visit. Aquenno seems to suspect something happened between us, as he watches us more closely than he had the previous day.
I feel a bit torn about keeping Shirasil’s visit from him. On the one hand, Blair isn’t an ally I’d like to lose. But I doubt she’d be on board with my plan to free the imprisoned Travelers. Remaining free is one thing, but breaking into Heaven is something else. Until I can ...

Everyone picks themselves up and dusts off their clothes in a bit of a daze. Or at least, Zyneth appears to be so. Mirzayael helps Fyre to her feet, but Zyneth is standing before I have an opportunity to do the same, already sheathing his blades at his hips.
“I think there’s much more we need to discuss after that encounter,” Fyre says, wearily rubbing the bridge of her nose. “But I don’t think any of us are in any state to do so tonight. I’ll try to find time tomorrow when ...

Sometime around midnight, a small, white, silk spider-construct crawls beneath our door. Ink and I have to suppress the urge to immediately squish it.
Zyneth sits up from the artificing book he was reading as the spider comes to a stop between us.
“Follow quietly,” it says in Mirzayael’s voice, itself barely a whisper. Then, without any pre-amble, it turns around and scuttles back out beneath the door.
Zyneth and I have to scramble to grab our things ...

Aquenno shadows us as Fyre leads the way up to some tower called the Loft. I know Noli used wyverns to send a letter to her wife when we first got stuck in Trenevalt’s spell, and I do often see the small lizards flitting over the rooftops in cities, but I’ve never used one for mail myself.
Winding our way up the spire, I can tell we’ve nearly reached the top when the chirps of wyverns grow from a faint chittering to a symphony of excited chatter. We step out into a tall, tap...

We take a long, meandering route back to the others as we continue to talk. In the streets, it could be any other city I’ve visited. But then we come across a gaggle of kids playing a chaotic game which involves hurling a dozen floating rocks at each other—cloudstone, Echo tells me—and I’m reminded of where I am. When I look up, the familiar sight of the Drifting Isles’ floating stepping-stones coils ever higher. It’s hard to believe an entire city has taken up residence here in t...

Hello! As I am wrapping up writing Kanin Fyre this week, I wanted to poll you all on what books you'd like to see next. I've got a couple ideas, but I'd like to hear what you prefer.
Also, here's some art of Fyre and Mir!

So since I signed A Little Salty with Tapas, I'll be working on A Little Salty Book 2 and 3 in the background. I've got time to do about 3 chapters of other books per week. I was planning to do ...

Ending up in an entirely new place isn’t as disorienting as I would have thought. I’ve teleported myself around with Displace enough at this point that popping out in a completely different setting and orientation is starting to become rote. Still, I don’t think it can be said I was prepared for what followed.
I take in my new surroundings in an instant: I’m in a stone room adorned like a study, full of cozy chairs, books, and a desk overflowing with writing material. The ...

The journey to Twilit City passes without event. The town is further south from the ones we’ve so far visited, and based on the lighter attire of the city’s inhabitants, it must be warmer here, too.
Twilit City lies in the valley of a wide, dry plain, save for a lone river that trickles down from distant mountain peaks to wind its way through the town. An artificial cloud hangs low and stationary over the village, casting shade across the streets, which are far more quiet and empty ...

Despite our initial success with dividing the Inventory, future attempts are less fruitful. I was able to divide them one more time, bringing the total Inventory slots up to four, but it consumed all of my mana. I had to wait until the next day for my mana to recover, but when I tried again, it wasn’t nearly enough to split the slots.
“It’s like they’re resisting me,” I say, emerging from the Between. “How come it’s taking more mana? It’s not consistent.”

We lope through the woods without any destination or goal in mind; it feels good just to be moving. Makes it easier to pull our mind away from the frustrating interaction with the void mage. Out here, we can just be.

Siqi blinks out of existence, but since I have my vision turned on in all directions, I can see when he instantaneously reappears behind us on a stool before a cabinet. He begins pulling out small plates and teacups, and again Zyneth spins to face him, a hand resting on the hilt of his blade.

I Inspect a few of the spell circles as well: [A void spell circle designed to adhere the target object to another surface.]
